Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Higher education is undergoing rapid transformation shaped by demographic change, digitalization, generational shifts, population aging, and expanding internationalization. These developments are reshaping policy environments, institutional arrangements, and teaching and learning practices. Research in this area has offered valuable insights into these dimensions; however, these dimensions are often examined separately, making it challenging to fully understand how they relate to one another. In this regard, further work may help to shed light on how macro-level transformations (e.g., demographic, policy, and global dynamics) are interpreted and translated at the meso-level of institutional governance, and how these processes are reflected in micro-level teaching and learning practices.

This Special Issue, entitled “The Impact of Societal Transformations and Consequent Institutional Reforms on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education,” aims to bring together research that addresses these interconnected processes. We consider contributions that examine how societal changes and institutional responses shape higher education across policy contexts, governance, and teaching and learning practices. Submissions may focus on a single level of analysis, while contributions that engage with relationships across levels are particularly encouraged. Therefore, for this Special Issue, we invite contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following:

  1. How do demographic changes, including declining birth rates and population aging, reshape the structures, functions, and sustainability of higher education systems?
  2. How are digital transformation and artificial intelligence reshaping teaching practices, learning processes, and educational innovation in higher education?
  3. How do generational shifts and increasing student diversity influence learning behaviors, expectations, and engagement in higher education?
  4. How do processes of internationalization and global mobility affect higher education systems, institutional practices, and cross-border learning experiences?
  5. How do higher education institutions respond to societal change through governance reform, organizational change, and policy adaptation?
  6. How are these different dimensions connected, and through what processes are broader societal changes translated into institutional reform and teaching and learning practices?
