Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Therapeutic arts in cancer care have a long history; however, it may be argued that the access to these approaches is not evenly distributed within the global healthcare system. One prominent issue is the need to build and sustain a body of evidence that can attract and support the funding of these services. If achieved, this can provide access for both patients and their relatives or carers to the enjoyment, creativity, shared experiences, and improved relations or quality of life that they can inspire to and achieve through therapeutic arts.
This Special Issue aims to bring together original studies or systematic reviews that outline the global contributions that the therapeutic arts can offer to cancer care.
We invite authors to submit papers considering a range of approaches, including 1) visual arts: painting, drawing, sculpture, and crafts; 2) creative writing: memoir, poetry, and stories; and 3) performance arts: dance, plays, music, and film. It is expected that each paper will explain and evaluate how an arts-based approach has contributed to and improved the diagnosis, care, or treatment of patients with cancer, or, how it has aided the education or training of healthcare professionals to help them support people receiving cancer care or their families or carers. This could include interventions or programs delivered in hospital or community settings at any point in the cancer care pathway, from early diagnosis to palliative care for patients, and also including bereavement for relatives and carers. While an evaluation of new interventions and systematic reviews of the literature is preferred, narrative reviews of areas or topics at an early stage of development will be considered if they can convincingly argue that they provide a new insight and direction to this particular field.
I look forward to receiving your contributions.
