Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to invite you to submit your research to this Special Issue, “Coatings and Surface Texturing of Metals, Alloys and Composites: Processing, Characterization and Properties.” Coatings and surface texturing are complementary surface engineering strategies used to enhance performance and durability in demanding service environments. Coatings improve properties such as corrosion resistance, wear resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical performance, while surface texturing modifies surface topography to control friction, wettability, and interfacial behavior.
Recently, combining surface texturing with coating technologies has garnered more interest, as textured surfaces can enhance coating adhesion and improve tribological performance, offering new opportunities to extend component lifetimes under severe conditions.
However, increasingly complex service environments continue to pose challenges, including coating degradation and premature failure. Addressing these issues requires advances in coating materials, surface texturing techniques, processing methods, and a deeper understanding of structure–property relationships.
This Special Issue aims to present recent developments in coatings and surface texturing on metals, alloys, and composites through original research papers and review articles.
In particular, topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Advanced coatings and surface texturing for alloys, steels, metals, and composite materials;
- Coating processing and fabrication techniques;
- The modeling and simulations of coating behavior and performance;
- The microstructure development and characterization of coatings;
- The mechanical, tribological, and corrosion properties of coatings;
- The structure–property relationships and performance optimization of coatings.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
