Surface Coatings for Biomedicine and Bioengineering
A section of Coatings (ISSN 2079-6412).
Section Information
Surface modification is important in many medical applications because properties such as biocompatibility, bio-integration, corrosion resistance, antimicrobial, anti-encrustation, and antibiofilm activity are only some of the most important properties correlated with the nature and characteristics of coatings.
The section of Coatings “Surface Coatings for Biomedicine and Bioengineering” intends to assure a fast publication process of the original papers as well as reviews, covering some of the most important topics related to the use of coatings in the fields of Biomedicine and Bioengineering. The papers are expected to be focused on the design, synthesis, processing, and appropriate evaluation of such biocoatings, but valuable theoretical approaches are also welcome and encouraged! Any surface deposition technique will be considered, including atomic layer deposition and chemical vapor deposition techniques; dip-coating; electrochemical deposition techniques; electrohydrodynamic (electro-spraying and electro-spinning) techniques; Langmuir–Blodgett monolayer deposition; matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE) technique; molecular beam epitaxy, sol-gel, spin-coating, pulsed laser deposition, sputtering methods, etc. The main focus of this section will be related to the development of coatings for implants and implantable devices such as stents, catheters, or other devices including sensors and biosensors, but recent advances in the field of wound dressings are also welcome. Along with the surface-induced properties and performances, drug delivery and adsorption will be also exploited for biomedical and bioengineering applications. All manuscripts to be considered for publication in this section will undergo a rigorous peer-review process, and decisions will be based on the recommendations of independent reviewers.
