Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, “Recent Progress in Surface Coatings for Biomedical Applications,” highlights the latest advancements in the design, fabrication, and use of functional coatings that enhance the biological and mechanical performance of nanobiomaterials. The success of biomedical materials and devices strongly depends on their surface characteristics, which govern crucial biological interactions such as cell adhesion, protein adsorption, osseointegration, and antimicrobial activity. In recent years, research has increasingly focused on developing innovative surface modification and coating strategies to optimize the biofunctionality, durability, and safety of existing materials while maintaining their bulk properties.

Surface coatings—including thin films, nanostructured layers, and bioactive or multifunctional interfaces—are now applied in diverse areas such as dental products, implants, tissue engineering scaffolds, drug delivery systems, biosensors, and wound healing materials.

This Special Issue welcomes innovative studies and comprehensive reviews addressing the design, development, and application of surface coatings that improve the performance of biomedical materials and devices. The focus includes, but is not limited to, the following research directions:

  • Functional and bioactive surface coatings for dental applications;
  • Coatings for cardiovascular devices;
  • Antimicrobial and antifouling coatings;
  • Smart stimuli-responsive and drug-releasing coatings;
  • Coating technologies for implants, scaffolds, and tissue regeneration;
  • Characterization, performance, and long-term stability of coated nanobiomaterials.

We kindly invite you to submit your contributions in the form of research articles, communications, or reviews to this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
