Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue focuses on the latest advances in surface coatings designed to enhance material performance in biomedical and industrial environments. The development of functional, durable, and biocompatible coatings plays a critical role in improving the safety and efficiency of components exposed to demanding physical, chemical, and biological conditions.
We welcome original research articles, reviews, and case studies addressing innovative coating technologies that offer multifunctionality—such as corrosion resistance, antimicrobial activity, wear reduction, improved osseointegration, or tailored surface energy—for biomedical devices, implants, surgical tools, and drug delivery systems. At the same time, the issue highlights the cross-sector applicability of these technologies in aerospace, energy, electronics, and manufacturing industries, taking into account the necessity to protect surfaces exposed to harsh environments.
Key topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Thermal sprayed-based coatings (e.g., APS, Cold Spray, HVOF, Flame spray);
- Plasma-based coatings (e.g., Plasma-Enhanced CVD);
- Physical and Chemical Vapor Deposition (PVD, CVD);
- Sol–gel coatings and hybrid organic–inorganic films;
- Electrochemical and electrophoretic deposition techniques;
- Laser surface modification and laser cladding;
- Surface functionalization for controlled biological or chemical response;
- Multilayer and gradient coatings for enhanced interfacial performance;
- Smart coatings with stimuli-responsive or self-healing properties;
- Coating–substrate interface characterization and adhesion mechanisms;
- In vitro/in vivo evaluation of coated biomedical devices;
- Standardization and translational challenges of coating technologies.
We encourage interdisciplinary contributions that explore the intersection of materials science, surface engineering, biomedical engineering, and industrial applications. The goal of this issue is to provide a platform to share breakthroughs that are shaping the next generation of coatings with high-performance, safe, and scalable solutions.
We look forward to receiving your contributions!

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
