Topical Collection Information

Dear Colleagues,

As the essential barriers and dynamic interfaces of the cell, intracellular and plasma membranes define the very essence of compartmentalization and organization. Far from being static lipid bilayers, these membranes are bustling hubs of activity where signaling cascades are initiated, material is trafficked and complex metabolic processes are coordinated. The proper function of these membranes—from the nuclear envelope to the endoplasmic reticulum and the endolysosomal system—is fundamental to cellular health, while their disruption lies at the heart of numerous diseases.

This Topic Collection, Exclusive Review Papers: Intracellular and Plasma Membranes, is dedicated to gathering outstanding review articles that capture the forefront of this dynamic field. In alignment with the scope of the section Cells, this curated series will feature authoritative insights into the processes governing membrane biology in health and disease. We aim to showcase critical perspectives on established concepts and emerging paradigms, including the biogenesis and function of membrane-bound organelles, the intricate dance of inter-organelle communication at membrane contact sites and the formation and trafficking of extracellular vesicles. By presenting these exclusive reviews, this collection serves as a vital resource for researchers seeking to understand the conceptual and technical advances that are reshaping our view of how membranes dictate cellular life.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the collection website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
