Dear Colleagues,
Mitochondria perform various functions within cells, including ATP production, cell cycle regulation, autophagy, and apoptosis. Because these functions require Ca2+, mitochondria are equipped with Ca2+ transporters and exchangers, which affect cellular Ca2+ signaling. Dysregulation in mitochondrial Ca2+ homeostasis is associated with various pathologies, such as cancer, obesity, or neurodegenerative diseases.
In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the characterization of mitochondrial Ca2+ dynamics. These studies have highlighted the importance of the reciprocal interactions between the different Ca2+ channels, transporters, and exchangers, which are all affected by mitochondrial voltage and the metabolic status of the organelle. Moreover, mitochondrial Ca2+ changes are exquisitely sensitive to the spatial proximity between other Ca2+-exchanging partners at the level of the endoplasmic reticulum or the plasma membrane.
This Special Issue invites original research and review articles to help elucidate the mechanisms that regulate mitochondrial Ca2+ dynamics, considering both experimental and modeling investigations. Topics will also include the regulation of mitochondrial functions by Ca2+ in physiological and pathophysiological conditions.

Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
