Oral Disease: Cellular Mechanisms and Emerging Therapeutic Strategies

Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Oral diseases comprise a diverse range of disorders from dental caries to soft tissue malignancies. They are not isolated ailments but have an intricate relationship with an individual’s systemic health. For this Special Issue, we invite original research and review articles that explore the etiology of oral diseases at a cellular level and investigate pathways or molecules that can be targeted to advance current therapeutic strategies to combat oral diseases.
Since the topic of oral diseases is so extensive, we have divided it into four categories for the convenience of authors and readers. The categories are: Dental, Periodontal, Infectious Diseases, and Premalignancies and Malignancies. Dental diseases primarily affect the hard tissues of the teeth, i.e., the enamel, dentin, and cementum. This category welcomes studies reporting novel mechanisms causing amelogenesis or dentinogenesis imperfecta, as well as investigations into the molecular biology of dental hard tissue development. Manuscripts exploring innovative preventive or therapeutic strategies for dental caries, including biomaterial-based, cellular, or regenerative approaches, are also encouraged.
Periodontal diseases involve the tissues that support and anchor the tooth to the alveolar bone. The Special Issue invites contributions addressing the cellular and immunological mechanisms of gingivitis and periodontitis, as well as studies examining periodontal manifestations of systemic diseases.
While many dental and periodontal disorders unquestionably involve bacteria, the Infectious Disease category focuses on primary oral infections caused by viral (e.g., herpangina), fungal (e.g., oral candidiasis) or specific bacterial infections such as oral syphilis or oral tuberculosis. Studies elucidating pathogen–host interactions, immune responses, and emerging therapeutic strategies are encouraged.
Finally, manuscripts investigating oral premalignant and malignant conditions such as erythroplakia and oral squamous cell carcinoma are also invited for this Special Issue. Submissions addressing cellular transformation, dysplasia, tumor initiation and progression, as well as studies exploring molecular biomarkers, early detection, and targeted therapeutic approaches are highly encouraged.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
