Dear Colleagues,
The concept behind glial cells as merely a support system for neurons has radically changed over the years, now considered as being dynamic players in the nervous system physiology and having crucial roles during disease. Increasing evidence indicate that altered glial activity is a key feature of many neurological diseases, suggesting that alterations in their function may considerably exacerbate nervous system diseases or even initiate them. These reports open the possibility for new therapeutic approaches focused on maintaining proper glial function or correct imbalances in glial physiology.
This Special Issue will focus in the scientific progress made to understand the role of glial cells in the neuropathology of the nervous system. We welcome submissions motivated by the study and understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that control glial cell function in neurodegenerative diseases, including, but not limited to, research on astrocyte, oligodendrocyte and microglial function in pathologies such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Huntington disease.
Submissions can be in the form of original research, review articles and communications. Articles in the field of basic and translational research are welcome. We look forward for your contributions.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
