Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Biliary tract tumors comprise a diverse group of epithelial hepatic and perihepatic malignancies that emerge from the biliary tree. They are a heterogeneous group with very different characteristics depending on the anatomically distinct primary site. The anatomic subtypes comprise gallbladder tumor, extrahepatic and intrahepatic tumor, and ampulla of Vater tumor. These are rare in most of the world, and their subtypes vary greatly between geographic regions; they are diagnosed most frequently in East Asian and South American countries. The incidence and mortality rates, including the overall increase in mortality rates, emphasize the unmet needs for improved diagnosis and treatment for biliary tract tumors.

In recent years, there have been many advances in the diagnosis of tumors using advanced molecular techniques, including NGS and the development of liquid biopsy. In terms of treatment, surgical resection is still the most important treatment for curative intents, and there have been advances in endoscopic resection and local ablative therapy, including radiofrequency ablation. In addition, the application of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immuno-oncology drugs has also recently shown promising results.

This Special Issue of Cancers therefore encompasses new research articles and timely reviews on all aspects of diagnosis and treatment in biliary tract tumors.
