Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the last 10 years, the development of bioinformatics has significantly transformed the fields of biology and medicine. The development of methods to identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets has led to promising new approaches for a variety of diseases. Searching the terms “biomarker” AND “bioinformatics” in PubMed resulted in over 7,400 hits for 2020. In 2012, the founding year of Biomedicines, this figure was 2,170. The figures for therapeutic targets and bioinformatics are similar.

Data collections have expanded tremendously over recent years. For example, the database “Array Express” alone has collected over 28,000 experiments on human cells or tissues. The Genomic Data Commons Data Portal of the National Institute of Health supplies in-depth data of over 85,000 cancer cases. These resources, in combination with in-house-generated data, present a unique opportunity to develop algorithms for biomarker and therapeutic target detection.

For the 10th anniversary of Biomedicines, this Special Issue aims to describe state-of-the-art methods to:

  • Classify diseases;
  • Determine biomarkers for diseases;
  • Identify therapeutic targets for diseases;
  • Utilize existing databases such as Array Express or the Gene Expression Omnibus.

Moreover, we want to identify and describe the current trends in bioinformatics associated with these tasks. The focus will be on papers linking bioinformatics and wet labs; thus, submitted papers should ideally include confirmatory experiments. However, papers reanalyzing existing data and establishing bioinformatics methods will be considered on a case-by-case basis, based on overall merit.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biomedicines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
