Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The field of atmosphere–ocean interaction explores the complex and dynamic exchange of energy, momentum, and gases, such as carbon dioxide, between the atmosphere and the ocean. Understanding these exchanges is critical for improving climate models, weather prediction, and insights into ocean and atmospheric circulation patterns. This Special Issue compiles recent advances in atmosphere–ocean interaction studies, highlighting observational, theoretical, and modelling studies that deepen our understanding of how these exchanges shape regional and global climates. It ultimately highlights the intricate interplay between the atmosphere and the ocean, emphasising its importance for predicting and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

We welcome both original research and review articles that resonate around the following:

  1. Energy and momentum transfer: studies that focus on the mechanisms driving the transfer of energy and momentum between the atmosphere and ocean, primarily through wind stress, waves, and ocean currents.
  2. Gas exchange and biogeochemical cycles: topics that address the exchange of gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen, and oxygen, across the air–sea interface. The rate of CO₂ uptake by oceans is vital for understanding the global carbon cycle and the ocean’s role as a carbon sink.
  3. The impact of climate variability and extremes: the influence of phenomena like the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and monsoonal patterns on atmosphere–ocean interactions, showing how these climate drivers affect heat and moisture fluxes, ocean circulation, and regional climate patterns. 
  4. High-latitude interactions: With increasing focus on the polar regions, this section may discuss atmosphere–ocean interactions in high-latitude environments, particularly around the Arctic and Antarctic. These regions experience unique interactions due to sea ice, which modulates energy exchange by acting as a barrier.
  5. Advances in observation and modelling techniques: the development of new observational tools, such as autonomous floats, wave gliders, and satellite-based sensors, has significantly expanded the scope of atmosphere–ocean interaction research.
  6. Role in climate change and future projections: how atmosphere–ocean interactions are likely to change under various climate change scenarios.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
