Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues, 

Atmospheric radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, plays a crucial role in environmental radioactivity and is an excellent indicator for various geophysical and atmospheric processes. Its behavior and distribution are intrinsically linked to soil properties, meteorological conditions, and human activity. In radioecology, radon and its progeny are significant contributors to natural radiation exposure and impact ecological systems via intricate interactions with air, water, and biota.

This Special Issue, entitled "Atmospheric Radon and Radioecology", aims to showcase recent advancements in radon monitoring, modeling, and its ecological implications, as well as enhance our understanding of its environmental dynamics and facilitate the development of robust risk assessment and mitigation strategies within the broader context of radioecology.

We welcome the submission of original research and review articles. The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Advances in atmospheric radon detection technologies;
  • Long-term radon monitoring networks and data analysis;
  • Radon transport and dispersion in the atmosphere;
  • Radon behavior in urban versus rural environments;
  • The ecological effects of radon and its progeny;
  • The interaction of radon with biota and ecosystems;
  • Numerical modeling of radon transport and decay;
  • The integration of radon data into climate and geophysical models;
  • Radon anomalies in volcanic and tectonic regions;
  • The correlation of radon emissions with geological formations;
  • Community engagement and education on radon risks;
  • Cross-disciplinary approaches combining radon with remote sensing or AI.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Atmosphere is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
