Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Animals are farmed for several purposes, ranging from the production of food (milk or meat) to the production of other goods such as wool, leather or fur. Even though considerable advances have been made regarding welfare requirements, the welfare of farmed species remains an area of constant public concern, with an increasing awareness that animals can suffer from pain due to common husbandry procedures (e.g., dehorning, castration).

We invite original research papers related to the welfare of farmed species (e.g., livestock, equines, poultry, fish), with particular interest in innovative animal-based indicators that can be used to assess pain at farm level. Additional topics may include the use of technology (e.g., PLF, machine learning) and/or biomarkers to improve welfare and/or pain recognition in farming species and the effect of training on reliability of new assessors.
