Recent Progress in the Anatomy and Pathology of Marine Mammals: Second Edition

Marine mammals are globally recognized as invaluable bioindicators with significant potential for monitoring public health. Ensuring the protection of these species, while balancing human activities at sea with the conservation of animal populations, remains a major international priority. Positioned at the top of the trophic chain and characterized by long lifespans, marine mammals serve as excellent sentinels of ocean health. Through the study of their diseases and conditions, they offer critical insights into the state of marine ecosystems.

The regular monitoring of marine mammals is essential not only for assessing the health of individual animals and populations, but also for providing a scientific foundation to evaluate human impacts on marine environments.

Besides pathology, numerous anatomical and physiological characteristics of marine mammals remain poorly understood and described. These aspects raise intriguing questions about how these animals have adapted to their aquatic habitats and their ability to respond to future environmental changes.

This Special Issue aims to present an updated and comprehensive overview of current research on the anatomy and pathology of marine mammals, with the goal of supporting the conservation efforts for the diverse species inhabiting our oceans.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
