Interview with Dr. Sarfaraz Ahmed Mohammed—Winner of the Algorithms Best Paper Award

Preparing a high-quality manuscript often requires several iterations. What were the main challenges you faced during the preparation of this paper, and how did you address them to clearly communicate your methodology and findings?
One of the principal challenges was to present panoptic segmentation as a unified framework for image understanding while clearly distinguishing it from, while also relating it to, semantic and instance segmentation. Because the paper spans several areas of computer vision—including feature extraction, object detection, scene recognition, and segmentation—we needed to organize the material in a logical progression that would be accessible to readers with different levels of familiarity with these topics.
A second challenge was to identify the datasets and evaluation criteria reported in the literature that would support meaningful comparisons among scene-recognition and panoptic-segmentation models. However, since the published studies use different benchmarks, metrics, and experimental settings, the evidence had to be synthesized carefully so that the strengths, limitations, and progress of the various approaches could be presented fairly and clearly.
We addressed these challenges through several rounds of revision, which consisted of an iterative process: (1) structure refinement, (2) improvement of the transitions between topics, (3) clarification of terminology, and (4) carefully balancing technical depth with readability. This process helped us communicate the scope and methodology of the review, as well as its principal findings and conclusions, in a more coherent and precise manner.

The peer-review and editorial process play an important role in shaping a final publication. How did the review process at Algorithms help you refine or improve your work?
The peer-review process at Algorithms played an important role in strengthening both the substance and presentation of our work. The reviewers provided thoughtful and constructive comments that prompted us to revisit several sections, sharpen our central arguments, and ensure that the conclusions were more directly supported by the evidence discussed in the paper.
In particular, the reviewers encouraged us to expand our discussion of the performance and practical limitations of scene-recognition and panoptic-segmentation models. Their comments led us to give greater attention to the trade-off between computational complexity and recognition accuracy, thereby helping readers better understand the practical implications of deploying these models in real-world settings.
Overall, the review process helped us address gaps, improve the organization of the manuscript, and present a more balanced and critical assessment of the field. We greatly appreciate the professionalism of the reviewers and editors, whose perspectives contributed substantially to the clarity, rigor, and impact of the final publication.

As authors, what do you consider the most important qualities of a strong review paper, regardless of the specific scientific field?
A strong review paper should do more than summarize the existing literature; it should provide a comprehensive, critical, and well-organized synthesis of the field. It should clearly define its scope, identify the major contributions and emerging trends, and explain where important questions, limitations, or disagreements remain.
Logical organization and consistency are also essential. The literature should be compared using clear criteria and precise terminology, with careful attention to differences in assumptions, methods, datasets, and evaluation measures. Well-designed tables and figures can be especially valuable because they allow readers to compare complex information efficiently and to see patterns that may not be apparent from a purely narrative discussion.
Finally, an effective review should offer an original perspective on the literature by identifying promising directions for future research and explaining why they matter. The strongest reviews provide readers with both a reliable foundation in the subject and a thoughtful roadmap for advancing the field, while remaining rigorous, balanced, and attentive to practical and societal relevance.

Publishing in an open access journal increases visibility and accessibility. How do you feel the open access model of Algorithms will support the dissemination and impact of your research?
Publishing in an open access journal such as Algorithms makes our work freely available to researchers, practitioners, students, and other interested readers, regardless of whether they have access through a subscribing institution. This broad accessibility is especially valuable for a topic that intersects several areas of computer vision and may be relevant to audiences across multiple disciplines.
Open access also supports the rapid dissemination and reuse of research findings. By removing subscription barriers, it creates more opportunities for other researchers to engage with the work, build upon it, apply its insights, and initiate interdisciplinary collaborations. It may also broaden the potential for the paper to be cited and used in practical settings.
Equally important, open access promotes more equitable knowledge sharing by enabling researchers and students at institutions with limited resources to participate more fully in the scientific conversation. We believe that this wider availability will strengthen the reach and long-term impact of our work.

As Best Paper Award recipients, what message or advice would you share with future authors who aim to submit high-quality research to Algorithms?
First, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Algorithms and the awards committee for recognizing our work. Receiving the Best Paper Award is a great honor, and it encourages us to continue pursuing rigorous and meaningful research.
Our advice to future authors is to begin with an important, well-defined problem and to state the contribution of the work as clearly as possible. A strong manuscript should demonstrate a thorough understanding of the relevant literature, sound methodology, careful analysis, and a transparent presentation of the findings and their significance. Originality is essential, but it should be accompanied by clarity, precision, and attention to detail.
We also encourage authors to revise their manuscripts repeatedly and to regard peer review as an opportunity to improve the work rather than simply as an obstacle to publication. High-quality research often develops through sustained effort, constructive criticism, and careful refinement. Persistence, intellectual openness, and a commitment to excellence are among the most valuable qualities an author can bring to the process.
