Aims & Scope
Aims
AI Biology (ISSN: 3043-2189) is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal dedicated to publishing high-quality research on the development and application of artificial intelligence for and in biological sciences. The journal focuses on artificial intelligence methods for understanding, predicting, and engineering biological systems across all levels of biological organization, from molecules and cells to organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems. It welcomes both methodological advances in AI for biological research and application-driven studies that generate new biological insights and advance discovery across the biological sciences. The journal also welcomes research that draws on biological principles to inspire new AI methods. It publishes original research articles, reviews, and communications, but other article types will also be considered. Research methods must be described in sufficient detail to ensure the reproducibility of the results; accordingly, there are no restrictions on the maximum length of manuscripts. Manuscripts are expected to contain substantial components from both AI and biology; purely clinical studies reporting routine diagnostic efforts, or purely algorithmic papers without meaningful biological validation fall outside the scope.
Scope
The journal covers, but is not limited to, the development and application of AI for, in and from the following biological topics:
- Biological sequence, molecular structure, and function analysis;
- Omics, single-cell, spatial, and multi-omics data analysis;
- Phenotype prediction, trait discovery, and genotype–phenotype association;
- Systems biology, biological network inference, and computational modeling of biological systems;
- Biomolecular design, synthetic biology, and bioengineering;
- Cell biology, developmental biology, physiology, and regenerative biology;
- Evolution, genetics, population biology, and biodiversity analysis;
- Ecology, environmental biology, conservation biology, and ecosystem monitoring;
- Experimental design, automated experimentation, optimization, and biological discovery;
- Microbiome research, host–microbe interactions, pathogen biology, and infectious biology;
- Animal and plant sciences, including genetics, breeding, physiology, nutrition, health, reproduction, development, and production;
- Biological big data and multimodal data science, including biological imaging, video and behavioral data, biosensor and wearable data, and multimodal data integration;
- Biology-inspired AI, including neuromorphic, molecular, and bio-inspired approaches.
MDPI Publication Ethics Statement
MDPI is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
MDPI takes the responsibility to enforce a rigorous peer-review together with strict ethical policies and standards to ensure to add
high quality scientific works to the field of scholarly publication. Unfortunately, cases of plagiarism, data falsification, inappropriate
authorship credit, and the like, do arise. MDPI takes such publishing ethics issues very seriously and our editors are trained to proceed in
such cases with a zero tolerance policy. To verify the originality of content submitted to our journals, we use iThenticate to check submissions against previous publications.
