Cover Story:

Current diagnostic criteria for PTSD exclude symptoms resulting from exposure to ongoing traumatic stress. Existing assessment tools thus do not fully consider stress symptoms associated with this type of exposure.
Our analysis demonstrated that the current definition of PTSD does not capture the whole “traumatic picture” of prolonged threat and that a new comprehensive tool specifically designed for such conditions is needed. As civilian populations sustain ongoing violence in many regions around the world, these results have global implications. View this paper
