Cover Story: The health department in Los Angeles County partnered with three health centers to implement a produce prescription program (PPR) for patients with diabetes or prediabetes. The PPR provided patients with USD 40 monthly for 6 months to purchase fresh produce. This qualitative assessment describes clinic staff experiences with the PPR, documenting the facilitators and barriers they encountered during implementation. Interviewees discussed the importance of having preexisting partnerships and programs to support the PPR at their clinics. Hidden costs related to PPR implementation included a large and unexpected amount of staff time devoted to patient enrollment. Findings can be used to inform future PPR efforts, helping to facilitate quality program delivery and troubleshoot implementation barriers. View this paper
