Cover Story: The GHG emissions of heated greenhouses are significant in France: around 2.2 kg CO2/kg of tomatoes compared to 0.6 kg CO2/kg cultivated in unheated greenhouses in Spain; 80% of greenhouses have natural gas as a primary energy resource, and average overall energy (electricity + fuel) consumption is as high as 341 kWh/m2/year. Within the current climate change and economic challenges, the multi-disciplinary project SERRES+, financed by regional councils of Brittany and Pays de la Loire, aims at redesigning the heated greenhouse production system, optimizing ventilation and heating strategies including storage and without using fossil fuels, simulating crop growth, and taking into account the properties of materials and the architectural envelope.
