Cover Story: Old concrete buildings are often torn down under the argument of obsolescence. As with any pioneering technology, old reinforced concrete (RC) structures had experimental beginnings. Many of the damage processes of RC were not understood until the second half of the 20th century. Are old RC buildings more sensitive to damage than newer buildings? What types of damage are the most common? This research is a starting point in clarifying the state of conservation of old RC buildings. Whether corrosion or spalling, the severity of the damage varies among countries, building uses, and building characteristics. To measure concrete health in an objective manner, the method terminology was validated in 48 old concrete buildings. View this paper.
