Cover Story: Diabetes, a severe and chronic disease, is a leading cause of death worldwide. Diabetic eye disease, caused by damage to the retina, is the most common microvascular complication of diabetes and includes macular edema and Diabetic Retinopathy (DR). DR is described as non-proliferative, proliferative and macular edema. DR patients show different signs, such as micro-aneurysms, hard and soft exudates, and hemorrhages in different stages of the disease. This paper shows our work in developing a computer-assisted method that could accurately detect DR lesions from retinal fundus images without coding experience. We created a dataset of annotated retinal images and tested the new computer vision models YOLOv8 and version 9 in detecting different DR features. We also provided segmentation of the optic disc.
