Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The author states that this paper “discusses the link between increasing inequality in post-apartheid South Africa and education, with specific reference to Althusser’s ISAs and the abuse of Ubuntu as a subterfuge for socio-economic inequality.” The author asserts that “Ubuntu has been treated as a moral quality of human being, as a way of thinking, a philosophy or an ethic, as African humanism, and a world perspective.” However, it is not clear which definition of Ubuntu this author has adopted in this paper. There is a section in this paper titled “Ubuntu in South Africa”. In that section, it is still not clear which definition of Ubuntu this author has adopted.  The author needs to be clear about what Ubuntu is before talking about “applying Ubuntu -style education...”  The author also argued that Ubuntu has been abused as a “subterfuge for socio-economic inequality.” The author speaks about how the post-apartheid South African government has not addressed inequalities and how they continue to pursue neo- liberal economic policies. However, the author did not explain exactly how Ubuntu has been abused.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The paper is an in-depth analysis of the UBUNTU philosophy and what it offers in terms of practical (socio-political) implications for post-apartheid Africa. Although I don't find any novel concepts or thesis in the paper, papers that provide a decent synthesis are also important because they can motivate additional research into the explored problem.
