Cover Story: Food allergy management requires the avoidance of allergenic food, which, on top of the commonly discussed direct costs, may contribute to time and opportunity costs. We performed a scoping review, guided by Arskey and O’Malley’s methodological framework and reported using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses extension for Scoping Reviews, aiming to examine the peer-reviewed literature on the indirect costs of food allergies and characterize these costs through a series of fictitious case studies. We found that the limited body of peer-reviewed literature supports the notion that food allergies commonly carry substantial indirect costs across diverse measurement tools, albeit with age-group differences.
