Cover Story: The theory of ironic processes proposes that in cognitively demanding situations avoidant instructions can cause behaviour in the unintended direction i.e., ‘ironic’ behaviour. We investigated the impact of avoidant instructions; ‘do not drift towards the centre line, while subjects were driving on the unfamiliar side of the road under the high cognitive load conditions of driving with a secondary task and driving through roadworks. Avoidant instructions did not lead to dangerous ironic behaviour. The findings of the study are further discussed in the paper. View this paper
