A Scheme for Speed Breeding of Tomato Through Modification of the Light Environment
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsIntroduction
- Introduce the crop, production and productivity statistics
- Briefly highlight the objectives of the breeding programme, varieties that have been developed and highlight the limitations and strengths of the programme.
- Highlight the need for breeding new tomato varieties and why the speed breeding?
Materials and Methods
- Indicate the reasons to study these 2 varieties? Why were they chosen for this particular study?
- Please explain the "specific light recipe - 3:2:1" more details are needed.
- It appears that at least there are 3 sources of variation, namely Cultivars, Days/Growth stages, photoperiod and light intensity, based on this, why did the authors decide on One-way ANOVA? Why not a 2 or 3-way ANOVA because that would be more appropriate for this study?
- With One way ANOVA other sources of variation are not explained - please relook into this.
Results
1. The ANOVA table should be provided and presented in the body of the manuscript as it is expected to show all sources of variation.

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThe manuscript is very poorly written. The work has many shortcomings that cannot be easily corrected without repeating the experiments. The fundamental problem is how the cultivation regime affects the basic quality parameters of the product compared to, for example, conventional cultivation. I have included my basic comments and questions in the attached pdf file.

Round 2

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsAuthors responded to all comments and suggestions. However, I think the authors can improve the flow of the introduction. Suggestion, Introduction, line 67 - 74 can be placed as the first paragraph of the introduction. Under materials and methods, line 90-91 "...r distinct phenological and architectural traits." authors should specify the actual differences between there tow cultivars

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThe changes the authors made are sufficient and improve the manuscript. Therefore, I have no further comments. The explanations provided by Authors make sense, such as the color of the plants in the photos, and are fully acceptable.
