Cover Story: Cryptococcosis, an infectious disease caused by Cryptococcus-species clusters, primarily affects immunocompromised hosts, causing invasive infections with a high mortality rate and lasting complications. Dendritic cells (DCs) shape adaptive immune responses, serving as the most potent antigen-presenting cells bridging the innate and adaptive immune responses. Upon infection, DCs can mature and migrate to the draining lymph nodes to interact with naïve T cells, initiating the adaptive response. However, this accounts for only a fraction of DCs, with the majority of DCs performing other functions, e.g., restimulating T cells, or activating fungal killing. Here, we focus on the current understanding of the interaction between Cryptococcus and DCs, DC subsets, and their functional diversity. View this paper
