Cover Story: A minority of students meet the current physical activity (PA) guidelines, including muscle-strengthening activities and sedentary behavior. Factors influencing PA engagement range from policy and regulatory interventions to individual and interpersonal characteristics such as personality. This study relates the 'Big Five' personality traits to various PA variables among German university students, and finds positive associations with Extraversion and Conscientiousness, and an inverse relationship with Negative Emotionality. Extraversion and Open-Mindedness showed a dependence on activity intensity, and surprisingly, adherence to PA guidelines was negatively associated with Openness. Understanding the links between personality and PA can inform tailored interventions and strategies to effectively promote an active lifestyle among students. View this paper
