Cover Story: Robots are serving food in numerous restaurants in many parts of the world. However, waiter robots are not so competent when it comes to beverage and soup delivery. The problem arises in their jerky motion control, although they are widely used as industrial robots. In this paper, we examined the kinematic solutions from ROS and the constraints of motion planning and proposed solutions with jerk limits using spline velocity profiles. State machine design that enables the robot to behave and move reactively will be introduced to effectively balance desired velocity with managing the type of load. Experiments have shown that robots can move smoothly without crashing or spilling. The control of velocity behaviors has enhanced waiter robot operations in restaurants. View this paper
