Cover Story: The blockchain is a universally acclaimed innovation based on distributed ledger technology. It has attracted the interest of many scholars and companies in recent years because of its well-known properties of immutability, transparency, decentralization, and reliability. Through implementation of a multistep methodology, this paper explores the current state of the art regarding the application of blockchain-based systems in transportation. The following two areas are analyzed in depth: supply chain and logistics; road traffic management and smart cities. The most significant conclusion is that while this technology is very promising, it is still very much in its infancy, due to the shortage of practical implementations. View this paper.
