Comments and Suggestions for Authors

After reviewing the paper „The beneficial effects of anthocyanins from cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) fruits and their possible uses: A review“ I suggest the following parts to be reconsidered and modified before the publishing:

1.       It is highly recommended to add the part of the influence of the preservation processes on the anthocyanin content of the cornelian cherries.

2.       Since it is a word about review the brief content at the beginning of the text would be very useful.

3.       In the conclusion part the more interesting and useful fact should be emphasized. Currently it is very simple with general information.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The paper analyzes the existing scientific developments in quantitative and qualitative assays of anthocyanins in cornelian cherry fruits and factors impacting their content. It provides insights into the preharvest and postharvest factors that influence the amount of anthocyanins in plant tissue. The work is interesting and contains new and novel information. I have some suggestions for the improvement of the article.

1. L13 changed the “amount” to “content”.

2. L19 the format of “Cornus mas L.” should be modified.

3. The logic of Abstract section needs to be improved.

4. L78 changed “-OCH3” to “-OCH₃”.

5. In my opinion, the content of lines 90-95 is unnecessary, it is recommended to delete.

6. The description of the properties of “Anthocyans” (line97-line102) should be simplified

7. The title of Part 4 should be “Methods for extraction of anthocyanin”, not that “Methods for determining the anthocyanin content”, please changed.

8. Methods section is not necessary for review paper, please revised.

9. The unit of the vertical axis in Figure 3. is incorrect, mg 100g^-1 is correct.

10. 6.1 section. The effects of specific growing conditions, such as soil type, fertilization, and irrigation, on anthocyanin content are not extensively discussed.

11. The study does not include a comprehensive analysis of the bioactive properties and potential health benefits of anthocyanins from cornelian cherry fruits.

12. Conclusions section. Suggest merging the several paragraphs into one and refining and summarizing the important results of this article.

13. It is recommended to refer to the journal requirements to modify the formatting of References in the entire manuscript. For example, Ref. 2, 9, 13, 18, 32, 40, 45, 50, 57, 67, 72, 79, 89, 93, 100, 101.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The review "The beneficial effects of anthocyanins from cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) fruits and their possible uses" is well-written and comprehensive, but requires some revisions.

1. The abstract is an essential part of a manuscript and can significantly impact its effectiveness. It should be specific to your findings, aims, and conclusions. In this regard, the abstract structure should be written in the following order:

An introduction of one or two sentences

Methodology

Example data and results

Concise conclusions in one or two sentences.

This abstract does not provide informative and general conclusions. It is recommended to add some concrete results.

2. In the introduction, the author should provide clear and concise information about the comparison of anthocyanin pigments with synthetic compounds. Additionally, they should highlight the importance and superiority of natural-based compounds.

3. The introduction needs to be updated with recent references from 2018-2023.

4. I suggest that the authors create a table that presents the total anthocyanin content per 100 grams of commonly consumed fruits, vegetables, and nuts that are rich in anthocyanin. They can then compare this data with the anthocyanin content found in cornelian cherry fruit. This information will be valuable for industries and human nutrition.

5. In Section 3, pages 2-3, lines 69-102, the structure of anthocyanin is discussed. However, it would be more engaging to include information about the structural changes that occur in anthocyanins at different pH levels (acidic, neutral, and alkaline) or temperatures (low and high) and how these changes affect their patterns and color range. An illustration similar to Figure 2 could be provided to demonstrate the patterns and color range of anthocyanins in different pH levels (1-14) or temperatures (low to high).

6. Line 104-123: The fourth section focuses on the determination of the anthocyanin content, but each part is too little and needs to be supplemented. It is recommended to add a Table, chart, or Figure that deals with the pros and cons of each approach in more detail.

7. Table 3. The abbreviation of the words DW and FW should be corrected. First, the word should be written in full name and then it should be abbreviated (DW or FW).

 8. As a suggestion for Table 3, the author can add a column with the title of the extraction methods or determination approach for the assessment of the total anthocyanin content of cornelian cherry

9. At the conclusion, the author should suggest future research directions.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The review is an interesting topic but needs improvement in the following points: Uniformize the expression of results in Table 3, whether on a dry or wet basis, otherwise comparisons cannot be established between various scientific sources. Likewise in the text, sometimes the authors cite the anthocyanin contents on a dry basis and others on a wet basis. The authors are suggested to expand the relationship between anthocyanin content and color components. Can these values be used as predictors of anthocyanin content? The authors should address the chemical composition or presence of other chemical compounds in cornelian cherry, because some of them reduce the possibility of use for certain consumers with specific nutritional requirements, for example diabetics or hypertensives.
