Cover Story: Our cross-sectional study of American young adults found evidence linking social media usage and poor sleep. This link was particularly strong for young adults who are more emotionally invested in social media. We also found evidence that the connection between social media usage and poor sleep is partly explained by increases in negative social comparison and pre-sleep cognitive arousal. Overall, these findings suggest that excessive social media use may interfere with the development of healthy sleep patterns during young adulthood. Given the importance of good sleep for health and well-being across the lifespan, future research should explore whether interventions that reduce social media usage could potentially improve young adults’ sleep habits.
