Cover Story: Companion dogs show various forms of socio-cognitive traits that enable a smooth co-existence with their owners – for example, dogs are capable of learning from the humans’ behaviour via observation. At the same time, there are several behavioural characteristics in dogs that are considered as problematic, such as the various forms of owner-directed aggression or resisting against the owner’s will. In this study, the possible association between the various aspects of the dog–human relationship was assessed by testing dogs with various problem behaviours in a social learning task. One of the most interesting findings was that those dogs that scored higher on aggression and assertiveness-related traits learned better from the human demonstrator. The results indicate that the dog–human relationship may have a complex association with various aspects of social interactions between the two species. View this paper.
