Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors have been focused on the mechanical properties of shear square section steel tube dampers using experimental testing. The manuscript has a good novelty and contribution to the field. However, there are some comments to be responded to before the final decision can be made.

1. What has been the reason for designing five groups of 15 specimens? Any criteria?

2. The literature review should be extended using the following references:

  •   Seismic resilience evaluation of RC-MRFs equipped with passive damping devices. Earthquakes and Structures, 18(3), 391-405.
  •  Seismic performance evaluation of a recently developed magnetorheological damper: experimental investigation. Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction, 26(1), 04020061.
  •  Influence of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on optimal design of passive damping devices. In Structures (Vol. 28, pp. 847-862). Elsevier.
  •  Resilient structures and infrastructure. Berlin, Germany: Springer.
  •  Experimental and numerical investigations of a new hysteretic damper for seismic resilient steel moment connections. Journal of Building Engineering, 43, 102811.
  •  Trade-off Pareto optimum design of an innovative curved damper truss moment frame considering structural and non-structural objectives. In Structures (Vol. 28, pp. 1338-1353). Elsevier.
  • Development of a multiple coil magneto-rheological smart damper to improve the seismic resilience of building structures. The Open Civil Engineering Journal, 14(1).
  •  Performance evaluation of curved damper truss moment frames designed using equivalent energy design procedure. Engineering Structures, 226, 111363.

3. Have the authors thought of using Low Yielding Point (LYP) material in the damper? I believe that it may improve the seismic performance and energy dissipation capacity of the system.

4. It is suggested that the dissipated energy be added as a new column in Table 3.

5. The hand calculation for the Equivalent viscous damping coefficient of at least one specimen should be provided.

6. Have the authors made any comparison between the proposed system and conventional passive damping devices?

Reply:

Considering the structural form of shear type steel tube damper, combining the two connection forms of bolted connection and welded commonly used in engineering applications, changing different design parameters for testing, and selecting the structural form with excellent performance and good energy consumption based on the analysis of test results.

  1. Have the authors thought of using Low Yielding Point (LYP) material in the damper? I believe that it may improve the seismic performance and energy dissipation capacity of the system.

Reply:

According to the current Chinese code "Standard for design of steel structures " GB 50017-2017, the steel used in building structures is preferred to high-strength structural steel. Compared with the steel with higher yield strength, the structural steel grade Q235 used in this test is already a material with lower yield strength as specified in the code, and its energy dissipation capacity and seismic performance are also excellent.

  1. It is suggested that the dissipated energy be added as a new column in Table 3.

Reply:

We have stated the energy dissipation capacity of the dampers as a separate section in Section 3.5 and their energy dissipation capacity has been described in Table 4, which is highlighted in red in the original text for your review.

  1. The hand calculation for the Equivalent viscous damping coefficient of at least one specimen should be provided.

Reply:

Generally, in order to simplify the calculation, the Chinese specifications “Specification for seismic test of buildings” JCJ/T 101-2015 are used for the calculation, schematically as follows.

where is the equivalent viscous damping coefficient, SABCD represents the area of the hysteresis loop, and S(OBE+ODF）represents the area of triangles SOBE and SODF.

Figure 1. Calculation diagram of equivalent viscous damping coefficient.

  1. Have the authors made any comparison between the proposed system and conventional passive damping devices?

Reply:

Traditional dampers have been used more in practical engineering and have a more complete theory, therefore, in the actual test process, the test related to traditional dampers was not carried out specifically, and the advantages and disadvantages of traditional dampers and the dampers proposed in this paper were compared and analyzed in the introduction part, which is shown in red. The traditional shear type metal dampers have complex structures and high cost, mainly used in high-rise or super high-rise buildings, not suitable for application in low multi-story buildings; the proposed dampers in this paper have simple structures, easy to replace, low cost, and suitable for low multi-story buildings.

Title: Experimental study on mechanical properties of shear square section steel tube dampers

Ref. number: metals-1586405-peer-review-v1

I have reviewed the paper “Experimental study on mechanical properties of shear square section steel tube dampers” by Li Xiao, Yonggang Li, Cun Hui, Zhongyi Zhou, Feng Deng. The topic fits well within those of the journal and may be of interest for both researchers and professional engineers. This reviewer is in the opinion that the article is worthy of being accepted for publication, after the authors have made changes as suggested below.

  1. Introduction

The literature review is good and the research gap is well identified. However, some consideration about design procedures of damped braces available in the literature should be added. Useful information can be found in the following papers:

A multi-performance design method for seismic upgrading of existing RC frames by BRBs.

Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics 2017, 46(7), 1099-1119, DOI:10.1002/eqe.2846.

Seismic design and retrofit of frame structures with hysteretic dampers: a simplified displacementbased procedure. Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering 2019, 17(5), 2787-2819,

DOI:10.1007/s10518-019-00558-8.

simplified retrofitting method based on seismic damage of a SDOF system equivalent to a damped braced building. Engineering Structures 2019, 200, 109712, DOI:10.1016/j.engstruct.2019.109712.

  1. Experiments details

A design procedure of the proposed shear type steel tube damper needs to be introduced.

Reply:

Considering that the traditional shear type metal damper has complex structures, high cost, tedious construction process, and is mainly used in high-rise or super high-rise buildings, not suitable for application in low multi-story buildings and other shortcomings, this paper optimizes the traditional shear type metal damper, and proposes a simple structure, easy construction, low replacement difficulty after damage, low cost, and can be applied to low multi-story buildings double-sided shear type low-cost Steel pipe damper.

Details of the specimen design have been shown at the end of the introduction and in the experimental details in Chapter 2, which have been highlighted in red in the original text for review.

3.3. Hysteretic curves

A force-displacement law for numerical modelling of the proposed shear type steel tube

damper could be specified taking cues from experimental results.

Reply:

The related numerical simulations have been published in other journals, thanks for your suggestions, and we will consider your suggestions for a more in-depth study in the subsequent experiments.
