Cover Story: A multi-approach study of tufa microbialites offers an explanation for mineralization intensities that change downstream. The mineralization of microbial mats is the result of a complex interplay between external (e.g., physicochemical conditions of water) and internal controlling processes (e.g., specific biological components).
