Cover Story: Inherent morphology and wettability characteristic differences of organo-clay arrangements between hydrophilic and biwettable sub-2 μm clay aggregates can enable the formation and enhancement of solid-stabilized water-in-bitumen emulsions with differing extent of emulsion stability during aqueous extraction of oil sands and subsequently in the bitumen froth treatment process. This is caused by the spatial distribution and particle surfaces of <200 nm clay mineral platelets. Clay platelets stacked in an orderly manner arise in the hydrophilic fraction, whereas randomly oriented <200 nm clay platelets are found in the biwettable fraction. An organic coating that is inhomogeneous at nanometer-scale is revealed on <200 nm clay platelet surfaces in the biwettable fraction, and a much lower carbon content is observed on <200 nm clay platelets in the hydrophilic fraction.
