Cover Story: Using bio-based polymers to replace polymers from petrochemicals in the manufacture of fibers is a possible way to improve sustainable development in the textile industry. Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most available bio-based polymers and one way to improve the fire behavior of this polymer is to add an intumescent formulation mainly composed of lignin from wood waste. Different formulations of PLA multifilaments have been elaborated. Up to 10 wt % of an intumescent formulation was added then processed, and the fire behavior of PLA fabrics with lignin was studied by cone calorimeter. Results were positive and warrant further investigation. By Aurélie Cayla. View this paper.
