Cover Story: A new type of atropisomerism has recently been discovered in 1,3-benzoxazines, where the intramolecular repulsion between negatively charged oxygen atoms on the imide and the oxazine ring hinders the rotation about the C–N bond. This cover image schematically illustrates how the atropisomerization in ortho-imide functional benzoxazines can be switched on or off by the manipulation of the steric structure of the end caps. Additionally, the polymerization behavior of benzoxazine monomers and the properties of the corresponding polybenzoxazines can also be controlled well by the imide end caps. The high thermal stability of this series of ortho-imide functional polybenzoxazines indicates their great potential in applications such as fire-resistant materials, electronic encapsulation materials, and polymeric matrices for high-performance composites.
