Cover Story: Non-cholera Vibrio species are rare waterborne pathogens. After systematic review, the results were 22 cases of Vibrio metschnikovii infections, with no cardiac involvement; 7 cases of sepsis; 7 of pneumonia; 2 skin infections; 11 diarrhea; and a gastroenteritis outbreak. This article documents the expanding clinical spectrum of V. metschnikovii, reporting the first patient with mitral valve endocarditis. The septic forms are associated with high morbidity. Risk factors for endocarditis did not emerge. The routes of infection could not be determined. Poor sensitivity to third-generation cephalosporins has been reported in the literature. Conclusion: The rising global incidence of non-cholera Vibrio infections, driven by environmental changes, calls for urgent research into the factors behind their pathogenicity and infection routes. View this paper
