Icing on eight-bundled conductors can significantly alter their aerodynamic behavior, potentially leading to structural instabilities such as galloping. This study employed wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations to analyze the aerodynamic parameters of each iced conductor across various angles of attack. The simulations incorporated detailed stranded conductor geometries to assess their influence on aerodynamic accuracy. Incorporating stranded geometry in simulations reduced average errors in lift and drag coefficients by 45–50% compared to smooth models. The Den Hartog coefficient prediction error decreased from 15.6% to 3.9%, indicating improved reliability in oscillation predictions. Additionally, conductors with larger windward areas exhibited more pronounced wake effects, with lower sub-conductors experiencing greater wake interference than upper ones. The above results illustrate that explicit modeling of stranded conductor surfaces enhances the precision of aerodynamic simulations, providing a more accurate framework for predicting icing-induced galloping in multi-bundled conductors. The extended operation of high-speed railways has led to an increased incidence of tunnel lining defects, with falling debris posing a significant safety threat. Within tunnels, single-train passage and trains-crossing events constitute the most frequent operational scenarios, both generating extreme aerodynamic environments that alter debris trajectories from free fall. To systematically investigate the aerodynamic differences and underlying mechanisms governing falling debris behavior under these two distinct conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (debris–air–tunnel–train) was developed using an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) turbulence model. Comparative analyses focused on the translational and rotational motions as well as the aerodynamic load coefficients of the debris in both single-train and trains-crossing scenarios. The mechanisms driving the changes in debris aerodynamic behavior are elucidated. Findings reveal that under single-train operation, falling debris travels a greater distance compared with trains-crossing conditions. Specifically, at train speeds ranging from 250–350 km/h, the average flight distances of falling debris in the X and Z directions under single-train conditions surpass those under trains crossing conditions by 10.3 and 5.5 times, respectively. At a train speed of 300 km/h, the impulse of CFx and CFz under single-train conditions is 8.6 and 4.5 times greater than under trains-crossing conditions, consequently leading to the observed reduction in flight distance. Under the conditions of trains crossing, the falling debris is situated between the two trains, and although the wind speed is low, the flow field exhibits instability. This is the primary factor contributing to the reduced flight distance of the falling debris. However, it also leads to more pronounced trajectory deviations and increased speed fluctuations under intersection conditions. The relative velocity (CRV) on the falling debris surface is diminished, resulting in smaller-scale vortex structures that are more numerous. Consequently, the aerodynamic load coefficient is reduced, while the fluctuation range experiences an increase. Full article

This paper presents a preliminary investigation into the aeroelastic behavior of a tailless flying wing equipped with a rotating wingtip. Based on the configuration of Innovative Control Effectors (ICE) aircraft, an aeroelastic model of the tailless flying wing with a rotating wingtip has been developed. Both numerical simulation and wind tunnel tests (WTTs) are employed to study the aeroelastic characteristics of this unique design. The numerical simulation involves the coupling of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and implicit dynamic approaches (IDAs). Using the CFD/IDA coupling method, aeroelastic response results are obtained under different flow dynamic pressures. The critical flutter dynamic pressure is identified by analyzing the trend of the damping coefficient, with a focus on its transition from negative to positive values. Additionally, the critical flutter velocity and flutter frequency are obtained from the WTT results. The critical flutter parameters, including dynamic pressure, velocity, and flutter frequency, are examined under different wingtip rotation frequencies and angles. These parameters are derived using both the CFD/IDA coupling method and WTT. The results indicate that the rotating wingtip plays a significant role in influencing the flutter behavior of aircraft with such a configuration. Research has shown that the rotation characteristics of the rotating wingtip are the primary factor affecting its aeroelastic behavior, and increasing both the rotation frequency and rotation angle can raise the flutter boundary and effectively suppress flutter onset. Transonic/supersonic wind tunnels are indispensable equipment for advanced aircraft to operate across subsonic, transonic, and supersonic regimes. The deformation of the flexible nozzle is the key to accurately controlling the Mach number of transonic wind tunnels. However, solving the deformation of flexible wall plates remains challenging due to the highly nonlinear relationship between wall loading and deformation, as well as the lack of simple yet effective mathematical models under complex boundary conditions. To accurately describe the deformation of flexible wall plates and improve computational efficiency, this study systematically investigates the deformation characteristics of flexible walls in two orthogonal directions and proposes an orthogonal beam function (OBF) model for characterizing small-deflection deformations. For large-deflection deformations in a flexible wall, an elliptic integral (EI) solution is introduced, and the OBF model is correspondingly modified. Experimental validation confirms that the OBF model effectively describes large-deflection deformations in a flexible wall. This research contributes to solving large-deflection deformation in flexible wall plates, enhancing both computational efficiency and accuracy. Full article

Surface Air-Cooled Oil Coolers (SACOCs) can become a critical component in managing the increasing thermal loads of modern turbofan engines. Installed within the bypass duct, SACOCs utilize high-mass flow bypass air for convective heat rejection, reducing reliance on traditional Fuel-Oil Heat Exchangers. This review explores SACOC design principles, integration challenges, aerodynamic impacts, and performance trade-offs. Emphasis is placed on the balance between thermal efficiency and aerodynamic penalties such as pressure drop and flow distortion. Experimental techniques, including wind tunnel testing, are discussed alongside numerical methods, and Conjugate Heat Transfer modeling. Presented studies mostly demonstrate the impact of fin geometry and placement on both heat transfer and drag. Optimization strategies and Additive Manufacturing techniques are also covered. SACOCs are positioned to play a central role in future propulsion systems, especially in ultra-high bypass ratio and hybrid-electric architectures, where traditional cooling strategies are insufficient. This review highlights current advancements, identifies limitations, and outlines research directions to enhance SACOC efficiency in aerospace applications. Full article

Medium and large-sized birds exhibit remarkable agility and maneuverability in flight, with their flapping motion encompassing degrees of freedom in flapping, twist, and swing, which enables them to adapt effectively to harsh ecological environments. This study proposes a flapping–twist coupled driving mechanism for large-scale flapping-wing aircraft by mimicking the motion patterns of birds. The mechanism generates simultaneous twist and flapping motions based on the phase difference of double cranks, allowing for the adjustment of twist amplitude through modifications in crank radius and phase difference. The objective of this work is to optimize the lift and thrust of the flapping wing to enhance its flight performance. To achieve this, we first derived the kinematic model of the mechanism and conducted motion simulations. To mitigate the effects of the flapping wing’s flexibility, a rigid flapping wing was designed and manufactured. Through wind tunnel experiments, the flapping wing system was tested. The results demonstrated that, compared to the non-twist condition, there exists an optimal twist amplitude that slightly increases the lift of the flapping wing while significantly enhancing the thrust. It is hoped that this study will provide guidance for the design of multi-degree-of-freedom flapping wing mechanisms. Full article

This paper aims to analyze the performance of a tilt-rotor fixed-wing RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) using a segmented approach, focusing on a nominal mission for SAR (Search and Rescue) applications. The study employs optimization techniques tailored to each segment to meet power consumption requirements, and the results highlight the accuracy of the physical characterization, which incorporates nonlinear propulsive and aerodynamic models derived from wind tunnel test campaigns. Critical segments for this nominal mission, such as the vertical take off or the transition from vertical to horizontal flight regimes, are addressed to fully understand the performance response of the aircraft. The proposed framework integrates experimental models into trajectory optimization procedures for each segment, enabling a realistic and modular analysis of energy use and aerodynamic performance. This approach provides valuable insights for both flight control design and future sizing iterations of convertible UAVs (Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles). Full article

We developed a microscale airflow modeling system with detailed building and terrain data to better understand the urban microclimate. Building shapes and heights, and terrain elevation data were integrated to construct a high-resolution urban surface geometry. The system, based on computational fluid dynamics using OpenFOAM, can resolve complex flow structures around built environments. Inflow boundary conditions were generated using logarithmic wind profiles derived from Automatic Weather System (AWS) observations under neutral stability. After validation with wind-tunnel data for a single block, the system was applied to airflow modeling around a university campus in Seoul using AWS data from four nearby stations. The results demonstrated that the system captured key flow characteristics such as channeling, wake, and recirculation induced by complex terrain and building configurations. In particular, easterly inflow cases with high-rise buildings on the leeward side of a mountain exhibited intensified wakes and internal recirculations, with elevated centers influenced by tall structures. This modeling framework, with further development, could support diverse urban applications for microclimate and air quality, facilitating urban resilience. Full article

The use of pressure-sensitive paints (PSPs), an optical oxygen sensing technique, to visualise and measure the surface pressure on vehicle models in wind tunnel testing is becoming increasingly prevalent. Porphyrins have long been the standard luminophore for PSP formulations, with the majority employing the red-emitting platinum(II)-5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorphenyl)-porphyrin. nIR-emitting luminophores, such as Pt(II) tetraphenyl tetrabenzoporphyrins, possess distinct advantages over visible emitting luminophores. In particular, they have wider spectrally useful ‘windows’, facilitating the insertion of a secondary visible emitting temperature-sensitive luminophore to be used for internal calibration without spectral crosstalk that detrimentally impacts PSP performance. In this work, we explore the effect of changing the loading quantity of an nIR-emitting para-CF3 Pt(II) benzoporphyrin luminophore on the performance of PSP formulations. An optimal luminophore loading of 1.28% wt/wt benzoporphyrin luminophore to polystyrene binder was identified, resulting in a low temperature sensitivity at 100 kPa of 0.61%/K and a large pressure sensitivity at 293 K of 0.740%/kPa. These strong performance metrics, for a polystyrene-based PSP, demonstrate the efficacy of benzoporphyrin luminophores as an attractive luminophore option for the development of a new generation of high-performance PSP formulations that outperform current commercially available ones. This article uses the sailfish outline as an airfoil profile to create a dual vertical-axis water turbine model for capturing wave and tidal current energy. A parametric water turbine model is built with the shape function perturbation and characteristic parameter description methods. Optimized by the multi-island genetic algorithm on the Isight platform, a CNC sample of the optimized model is made. Its torque and pressure are measured in a wind tunnel and compared with CFD numerical analysis results. The results show small differences between the numerical and experimental results. Both indicate that the relevant performance parameters of the turbine improved after optimization. During constant flow velocity measurement, the optimized axial-flow turbine has a pressure increase of 55% and a torque increase of 40%, while for the centrifugal turbine, the pressure increases by 60% and the torque by 12.5%. During constant rotational speed measurement, the axial-flow turbine’s pressure increases by 16.7%, with an unobvious torque increase. The Q-criterion diagram shows more vortices after optimization. This proves the method can quickly and effectively optimize the dual vertical-axis water turbine. Full article

During the process of flexible aerial refueling, the flexible structure of the hose drogue assembly is affected by internal and external interference, such as docking maneuvering, deformation of the hose, attitude changes, and body vibrations, causing the hose to swing and the whipping phenomenon, which greatly limits the success rate and safety of aerial refueling operations. Based on a 2.4 m transonic wind tunnel, high-speed wind tunnel test technology of a flexible aerial refueling hose–drogue system was established to carry out experimental research on the coupling characteristics of aerodynamics and multi-body dynamics. Based on the aid of Videogrammetry Model Deformation (VMD), high-speed photography, dynamic balance, and other wind tunnel test technologies, the dynamic characteristics of the hose–drogue system in a high-speed airflow and during the approach of the receiver are obtained. Adopting flexible multi-body dynamics, a dynamic system of the tanker, hose, drogue, and receiver is modeled. The cable/beam model is based on an arbitrary Lagrange–Euler method, and the absolute node coordinate method is used to describe the deformation, movement, and length variation in the hose during both winding and unwinding. The aerodynamic forces of the tanker, receiver, hose, and drogue are modeled, reflecting the coupling influence of movement of the tanker and receiver, the deformation of the hose and drogue, and the aerodynamic forces on each other. The tests show that during the approach of the receiver (distance from 1000 mm to 20 mm), the sinking amount of the drogue increases by 31 mm; due to the offset of the receiver probe, the drogue moves sideways from the symmetric plane of the receiver. Meanwhile, the oscillation magnitude of the drogue increases (from 33 to 48 and from 48 to 80 in spanwise and longitudinal directions, respectively). The simulation results show that the shear force induced by the oscillation of the hose and the propagation velocity of both the longitudinal and shear waves are affected by the hose stiffness and Mach number. The results presented in this work can be of great reference to further increase the safety of aerial refueling. Full article

Aircraft performance metrics such as range and endurance are highly dependent on induced and vortex drag. There is a close relationship between wake structure and aerodynamic performance. In the present paper, the velocity field behind the model of a wing with winglet is studied. The methodology and equipment for study in a low-speed wind tunnel ULAK–1 are presented. The pressure field was obtained using a five-hole pressure probe, which was positioned in a cross plane at 300 mm behind the wing trailing edge. The acquired experimental data are used to calculate the cross flow velocity and vorticity fields at an angle of attack of 6 degrees—around the maximum lift-to-drag ratio. The results are compared to the data of a model with planar wing. During the subsequent processing, coefficients of lift and induced drag can be obtained. Full article

Wingtip devices like winglets and other types have been created to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of aircraft based on minimizing the induced drag of tip vortices. This study aims to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of these devices at low Reynolds numbers. In the present study, the models of a basic non-swept tapered wing and a wing with arc-shaped wingtips are examined. For this purpose, the basic model is equipped with replaceable tips with different geometries. The measurements are performed in a low-speed wind tunnel at a Reynolds number of around 100,000. The analysis of the collected data shows that the best aerodynamic characteristics have a configuration with a 45-degree dihedral angle at the tips of the wing. These results can be used in the conceptual design of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to improve their performance in terms of range and endurance. Full article

Common aerodynamic modeling methods are compared, the effects of longitudinal coefficient deviations on the linearized missile model are analyzed using a deviation test approach, and the results are validated through simulations. The results show that interpolation-based aerodynamic modeling may lead to overfitting; segmented or denser Mach number testing is recommended to improve accuracy. Although aerodynamic error models based on derivatives and coefficients are applicable only within limited flight envelopes, they offer faster simulation and convenient uncertainty introduction. The missile’s longitudinal eigenvalue distribution is affected only by CLα, CmCL, and Cmq¯. The frequency domain differences between lift and pitch control surface effects determine the system’s non-minimum phase behavior. Furthermore, aerodynamic uncertainties may increase overshoot risk in a closed-loop control system, highlighting the need for robust control design. Full article

With the in-depth study of the unique flight ability of bats in the field of bionic robots, wind-tunnel experiments have become an important means to verify the feasibility of bat-like flying robot structures. However, due to the complex structure of a bat’s flexible wing membrane and multi-joint linkage, there is still a significant gap in the systematic experimental study of its flightability. In this study, a remote-controlled bionic prototype was designed and manufactured for the bat-like flapping-wing flying robot, and the changes in wing flight performance at different flapping frequencies (1–3.5 Hz) and angles of attack (0–15°) were tested in a low-speed (2–6 m/s) wind tunnel experiment. Six flight parameters were obtained through experiments. It was found that the flight performance of the prototype was successfully verified under a specific flapping frequency, angle of attack, and flight speed. This result not only determines the optimal flight parameter combination under the model, but also reveals the key influence of the flexible deformation of the wing membrane and the flapping frequency on the flight performance, which provides a key experimental basis for the structural optimization and control strategy design of the bat-like flapping-wing robot.
