Divinylisoprene rubber, a copolymer of butadiene and isoprene, is used as raw material for rubber technical products, combining isoprene rubber’s elasticity and butadiene rubber’s wear resistance. These properties depend quantitatively on the copolymer composition, which depends on the kinetics of its synthesis. This work aims to theoretically describe how the monomer mixture composition in the butadiene–isoprene copolymerization affects the activity of the TiCl4-Al(i-C4H9)3 catalytic system (expressed by active sites concentration) via kinetic modeling. This enables development of a reliable kinetic model for divinylisoprene rubber synthesis, predicting reaction rate, molecular weight, and composition, applicable to reactor design and process intensification. Active sites concentrations were calculated from experimental copolymerization rates and known chain propagation constants for various monomer compositions. Kinetic equations for active sites formation were based on mass-action law and Langmuir monomolecular adsorption theory. An analytical equation relating active sites concentration to monomer composition was derived, analyzed, and optimized with experimental data. The results show that monomer composition’s influence on active sites concentration is well described by a two-step kinetic model (physical adsorption followed by Ti–C bond formation), accounting for competitive adsorption: isoprene adsorbs more readily, while butadiene forms more stable active sites. As a new type of alloy system composed of five or more principal components, high-entropy alloys demonstrate outstanding comprehensive performance in the field of friction and wear through the synergistic effects of the high-entropy effect, lattice distortion effect, hysteresis diffusion effect and cocktail effect. This paper systematically reviews the research progress on the friction and wear properties of high-entropy alloys. The mechanisms of metal elements such as Al, Ti, Cu and Nb through solid solution strengthening, second-phase precipitation and oxide film formation were analyzed emphatically. And non-metallic elements such as C, Si, and B form and strengthen the regulation laws of their tribological properties. The influence of working conditions, such as high temperature, ocean, and hydrogen peroxide on the friction and wear behavior of high-entropy alloys by altering the wear mechanism, was discussed. The influence of test conditions such as load, sliding velocity and friction pair matching on its friction coefficient and wear rate was expounded. It is pointed out that high-entropy alloys have significant application potential in key friction components, providing reference and guidance for the further development and application of high-entropy alloys. Background: Self-report physical activity (PA) scales, accelerometry, and heart rate (HR) monitoring are reliable tools for PA measurement for children with cerebral palsy (CP); however, there are limitations for those who are primary wheelchair users. The purpose of our study was to evaluate face and construct validity of the PROMIS® Pediatric PA parent proxy short form 8a in measuring PA amount and intensity in children with CP who are non-ambulatory. Methods: Face validity: Semi-structured interviews with parents and pediatric physical therapists (PTs) were conducted about the appropriateness of each item on the PROMIS® Pediatric PA short form. Construct validity: Children with CP who were non-ambulatory participated in a one-week observational study. PA amount and intensity were examined using PA monitors (Actigraph GT9X) and HR monitors (Fitbit Charge 4). Activity counts and time in sedentary and non-sedentary intensity zones were derived and compared to the PROMIS® T-scaled score. Results: Twenty-two physical therapists (PTs) and fifteen parents participated in the interviews, and ten children completed 1-week PA observation. Eight and seven participants completed sufficient time of uninterrupted PA and HR monitor wear, respectively. Parents and PTs agreed that several questions were not appropriate for children with CP who were non-ambulatory. PA intensity via activity counts derived from wrist worn monitors showed a strong positive correlation with the PROMIS® PA measure. Conclusions: Construct validity in our small sample was established between PROMIS® scores and accelerometry activity counts when documenting PA amount and intensity; however, there were some differences on PROMIS® face validity per parent and PT respondents. Despite some concerns regarding face validity, the PROMIS® Pediatric PA parent proxy short form 8a shows promise as a valid measure of physical activity amount and intensity in non-ambulatory children with CP, warranting further investigation and refinement. Aluminum matrix composites provide an ideal solution for lightweight brake disks, but conventional casting processes are prone to crack initiation due to inhomogeneous reinforcement dispersion, gas porosity, and inadequate toughness. To break the conventional trade-off between high wear resistance and low toughness of brake disks, this study fabricated a bimetallic structure of SiCp/Al–Fe–V–Si aluminum matrix composite and cast ZL101 alloy using friction stir lap welding (FSLW). Then, the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and tribological behavior of the FSLW joints were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, tensile testing, and tribological tests. The results showed that the FSLW process homogenized the distribution of SiC particle reinforcements in the SiCp/Al–Fe–V–Si composites. The Al12(Fe,V)3Si heat-resistant phase was not decomposed or coarsened, and the mechanical properties were maintained. The FSLW process refined the grains of the ZL101 aluminum alloy through recrystallization and fragmented eutectic silicon, improving elongation to 22%. A metallurgical bond formed at the joint interface. Tensile fracture occurred within the ZL101 matrix, demonstrating that the interfacial bond strength exceeded the alloy’s load-bearing capacity. In addition, the composites exhibited significantly enhanced wear resistance after FSLW, with their wear rate reduced by approximately 40% compared to the as-received materials, which was attributed to the homogenized SiC particle distribution and the activation of an oxidative wear mechanism. WS2 coating, as a solid lubricating material, plays a significant role in the lubrication of rotating components in spacecraft. During the launch process, however, spacecraft are exposed to high-temperature and humid atmospheric environments, which can lead to oxidative failure in the coating, thereby limiting its engineering applications. By doping with B elements, B/WS2 was successfully prepared as a composite coating. The results demonstrate that the fabricated coating exhibits excellent high-temperature tribological performance in atmospheric environments. The mechanism through which B doping improves the high-temperature friction and wear properties of the WS2 composite coating was revealed through high-temperature friction and wear tests. With the incorporation of B elements, the average friction coefficient of the coating was 0.071, and the wear rate was 7.63 × 10−7 mm3·N−1·m−1, with the wear mechanisms identified as abrasive wear and spalling. Due to high-temperature oxidation, thermal decomposition effects, and the formation of WB4 during sputtering, the wear resistance and anti-plastic deformation capability of the coating were further improved. Compared to room-temperature test conditions, the B/WS2 composite coating at different high temperatures exhibited superior friction coefficients and wear rates. Notably, at 150 °C, the average friction coefficient was as low as 0.015, and the wear forms were abrasive wear and adhesive wear. Full article

65 Mn is a high-quality carbon structural steel that exhibits excellent mechanical properties and machinability. It finds broad applications in machinery manufacturing, agricultural tools, and mining equipment, and is commonly used for producing mechanical parts, springs, and cutting tools. Fe901 is an iron-based alloy that exhibits excellent hardness, structural stability, and wear resistance. It is widely used in surface engineering applications, especially laser cladding, due to its ability to form dense and crack-free metallurgical coatings. To enhance the surface hardness and wear resistance of 65 Mn steel, this study employs a laser melting process to deposit a multi-layer Fe901 alloy coating. The phase composition, microstructure, microhardness, and wear resistance of the coatings are investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Vickers hardness testing, and friction-wear testing. The results show that the coatings are dense and uniform, without visible defects. The main phases in the coating include solid solution, carbides, and α-phase. The microstructure comprises dendritic, columnar, and equiaxed crystals. The microhardness of the cladding layer increases significantly, with the multilayer coating reaching 3.59 times the hardness of the 65 Mn substrate. The coatings exhibit stable and relatively low friction coefficients ranging from 0.38 to 0.58. Under identical testing conditions, the wear resistance of the coating surpasses that of the substrate, and the multilayer coating shows better wear performance than the single-layer one. Fe–P Alloy Production from High-Phosphorus Oolitic Iron Ore via Efficient Pre-Reduction and Smelting Separation

Diverging from conventional dephosphorization approaches, this study employs a novel pre-reduction and smelting separation (PR-SS) to efficiently co-recover iron and phosphorus from high-phosphorus oolitic iron ore, directly yielding Fe–P alloy, and the Fe–P alloy shows potential as feedstock for high-phosphorus weathering steel or wear-resistant cast iron, indicating promising application prospects. Using oolitic magnetite concentrate (52.06% Fe, 0.37% P) as feedstock, optimized conditions including pre-reduction at 1050 °C for 2 h with C/Fe mass ratio of 2, followed by smelting separation at 1550 °C for 20 min with 5% coke, produced a metallic phase containing 99.24% Fe and 0.73% P. Iron and phosphorus recoveries reached 99.73% and 99.15%, respectively. EPMA microanalysis confirmed spatial correlation between iron and phosphorus in the metallic phase, with undetectable phosphorus signals in vitreous slag. This evidence suggests preferential phosphorus enrichment through interfacial mass transfer along the pathway of the slag phase to the metal interface and finally the iron matrix, forming homogeneous Fe–P solid solutions. The phosphorus migration mechanism involves sequential stages: apatite lattice decomposition liberates reactive P2O5 under SiO2/Al2O3 influence; slag–iron interfacial co-reduction generates Fe3P intermediates; Fe3P incorporation into the iron matrix establishes stable solid solutions. Numerical Study on Flow Field Optimization and Wear Mitigation Strategies for 600 MW Pulverized Coal Boilers

To compensate for the instability of renewable energy sources during China’s energy transition, large thermal power plants must provide critical operational flexibility, primarily through deep peaking. To investigate the combustion performance and wear and tear of a 600 MW pulverized coal boiler under deep peaking, the gas–solid flow characteristics and distributions of flue gas temperature, wall heat flux, and wall wear rate in a 600 MW tangentially fired pulverized coal boiler under variable loads (353 MW, 431 MW, 519 MW, and 600 MW) are investigated in this study employing computational fluid dynamics numerical simulation method. Results demonstrate that increasing the boiler load significantly amplifies gas velocity, wall heat flux, and wall wear rate. The maximum gas velocity in the furnace rises from 20.9 m·s−1 (353 MW) to 37.6 m·s−1 (600 MW), with tangential airflow forming a low-velocity central zone and high-velocity peripheral regions. Meanwhile, the tangential circle diameter expands by ~15% as the load increases. The flue gas temperature distribution exhibits a “low-high-low” profile along the furnace height. As the load increases from 353 MW to 600 MW, the primary combustion zone’s peak temperature rises from 1750 K to 1980 K, accompanied by a ~30% expansion in the coverage area of the high-temperature zone. Wall heat flux correlates strongly with temperature distribution, peaking at 2.29 × 105 W·m−2 (353 MW) and 2.75 × 105 W·m−2 (600 MW) in the primary combustion zone. Wear analysis highlights severe erosion in the economizer due to elevated flue gas velocities, with wall wear rates escalating from 3.29 × 10−7 kg·m−2·s−1 (353 MW) to 1.23 × 10−5 kg·m−2·s−1 (600 MW), representing a 40-fold increase under full-load conditions. Mitigation strategies, including ash removal optimization, anti-wear covers, and thermal spray coatings, are proposed to enhance operational safety. This work provides critical insights into flow field optimization and wear management for large-scale coal-fired boilers under flexible load operation. Full article

Tungsten and tungsten alloys are widely used in important industrial fields due to their high density, hardness, melting point, and corrosion resistance. However, machining often leaves processing marks on their surface, significantly affecting the surface quality of precision components in industrial applications. Electrolytic polishing offers high efficiency, low workpiece wear, and simple processing. In this study, an electrolytic polishing method is adopted and a novel trisodium phosphate–sodium hydroxide electrolytic polishing electrolyte is developed to study the effects of temperature, voltage, polishing time, and solution composition on the surface roughness of a tungsten–nickel–iron alloy. The optimal voltage, temperature, and polishing time are determined to be 15 V, 55 °C, and 35 s, respectively, when the concentrations of trisodium phosphate and sodium hydroxide are 100 g·L−1 and 6 g·L−1. In addition, glycerol is introduced into the electrolyte as an additive. The calculated LUMO value of glycerol is −5.90 eV and the HOMO value is 0.40 eV. Moreover, electron enrichment in the hydroxyl region of glycerol can form an adsorption layer on the surface of the tungsten alloy, inhibit the formation of micro-pits, balance ion diffusion, and thus promote the formation of a smooth surface. At 100 mL·L−1 of glycerol, the roughness of the tungsten–nickel–iron alloy decreases significantly from 1.134 μm to 0.582 μm. The electrochemical polishing mechanism of the tungsten alloy in a trisodium phosphate electrolyte is further investigated and explained according to viscous film theory. This study demonstrates that the trisodium phosphate–sodium hydroxide–glycerol electrolyte is suitable for electropolishing tungsten–nickel–iron alloys. Overall, the results support the application of tungsten–nickel–iron alloy in the electronics, medical, and atomic energy industries. Full article

This study analyzes 209 dog skeletons from two sites in Wolin (9th–mid-13th century AD) using 100 standard metric variables covering cranial, mandibular, and postcranial elements. Estimated withers height, body mass, age at death, and sex were derived using established methods. The results indicate the presence of at least two to three morphotypes: small spitz-like dogs (40–50 cm, 4–6 kg), medium brachycephalic forms (50–60 cm, 10–15 kg), and larger mesocephalic individuals (up to 65 cm, 20–40 kg). Dogs lived 3–10 years, with both sexes represented. Signs of cranial trauma and dental wear suggest utilitarian roles such as guarding. The size range and morphological diversity point to intentional breeding and trade-based importation. Small dogs likely served as companions or city guards, while medium and large types were used for herding, hunting, or transport. These findings highlight Wolin’s role as a dynamic cultural and trade center, where human–dog relationships were shaped by anthropogenic selection and regional exchange. Full article

Cavitation-induced degradation of metallic materials presents a significant challenge for engineers and users of equipment operating with high-velocity fluids. For any metallic material, the mechanical strength and ductility characteristics are controlled by the mobility of dislocations and their interaction with other defects in the crystal lattice (such as dissolved foreign atoms, grain boundaries, phase separation surfaces, etc.). The increase in mechanical properties, and consequently the resistance to cavitation erosion, is possible through the application of heat treatments and cold plastic deformation processes. These factors induce a series of hardening mechanisms that create structural barriers limiting the mobility of dislocations. Cavitation tests involve exposing a specimen to repeated short-duration erosion cycles, followed by mass loss measurements and surface morphology examinations using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results obtained allow for a detailed study of the actual wear processes affecting the tested material and provide a solid foundation for understanding the degradation mechanism. The tested material is the Ni-based alloy INCONEL 625, subjected to stress-relief annealing heat treatment. Experiments were conducted using an ultrasonic vibratory device operating at a frequency of 20 kHz and an amplitude of 50 µm. Microstructural analyses showed that slip bands formed due to shock wave impacts serve as preferential sites for fatigue failure of the material. Material removal occurs along these slip bands, and microjets result in pits with sizes of several micrometers. Full article

The threshing drum, a core component in combine harvesters, experiences significant unbalanced vibrations during high-speed rotation, leading to severe mechanical wear, increased energy consumption, elevated noise levels, potential safety hazards, and higher maintenance costs. A primary challenge is that excessive interference signals often obscure the fundamental frequency characteristics of the vibration, hampering balancing effectiveness. This study introduces a signal conditioning model to suppress such interference and accurately extract the unbalanced quantities from the raw signal. Leveraging this extracted vibration force signal, an automatic optimization method for the balancing counterweights was developed, solving calculation issues inherent in traditional approaches. This formed the basis for an automatic balancing control strategy and an integrated system designed for online monitoring and real-time control. The system continuously adjusts the rotation angles, θ1 and θ2, of the balancing weight disks based on live signal characteristics, effectively reducing the drum’s imbalance under both internal and external excitation states. This enables a closed loop of online vibration testing, signal processing, and real-time balance control. Experimental trials demonstrated a significant 63.9% reduction in vibration amplitude, from 55.41 m/s2 to 20.00 m/s2. This research provides a vital theoretical reference for addressing structural instability in agricultural equipment. Full article

Austenitic stainless steel inevitably undergoes deformation during application, and it is necessary to study the properties of deformed steel. This article investigates the evolution of microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of plastic-deformed 304 steel, the evolution law of structure and properties of steel is revealed. As a result, it was found that with the increase in deformation, the grains of 304 steel were destroyed, and many small subgrains were generated internally, resulting in a significant decrease in grain size. At the same time, the content of martensitic transformation in stainless steel increased significantly. The characteristics of the surface passivation film of stainless steel also change during the deformation process. Meanwhile, with the increase in deformation, the nanohardness and wear resistance of 304 steel gradually increase, but its corrosion resistance gradually decreases. Analysis suggests that microstructural changes such as grain size and phase transformation in stainless steel lead to an improvement in its mechanical properties, while the generation of defects during deformation and changes in surface passivation film characteristics result in a deterioration of its corrosion resistance. This study can provide a reference for the forming and performance optimization of metals and has high theoretical significance and practical value. Full article

Silicon carbide-bonded diamond materials produced by pressureless reaction infiltration of diamond preforms have high wear resistance and thermal conductivity, making them ideal for a range of industrial applications. During infiltration, the Si is typically converted to cubic β-SiC. The aim of the work was to investigate the extent to which the formation of hexagonal α-SiC can be achieved by adding α-SiC or AlN nuclei to the preform. Detailed microstructural investigations using XRD, high-resolution FE-SEM, and EBSD analyses show that both AlN and SiC serve as nuclei for α-SiC. Regardless of this, a large proportion of β-SiC forms on the surface of the diamonds. However, the added nuclei change the structure of the SiC framework that forms. Full article

The design of friction materials with integrated friction reduction and wear resistance functions has been a research challenge for many researchers and scholars, based on this problem, this paper proposes a nickel-based hard-soft composite coating structure. With 20CrMo steel as the matrix material, Ni20 powder doped with reinforced phase WC as hard coating material, using laser melting technology to prepare nickel-based hard coating on the surface of 20CrMo. PTFE emulsion and MoS2 as a soft coating are prepared on the hard coating, and the nickel-based hard-soft composite coating is formed. At 6N-0.3 m/s, the new interface structure obtains the optimum tribological performance, and compared to 20CrMo, the friction coefficient and wear amount are reduced by 83% and 93% respectively. The new friction interface can obtain stable and prominent tribological properties at wide load and low to high speed, which can provide the guidance on the structural design of friction reduction and wear resistance materials.
