To address the issues of low permeability, clogging susceptibility, and insufficient circumferential bearing capacity of traditional drainage blind pipes behind tunnel linings in water-rich areas, this study proposes a novel curved-mesh circumferential drainage blind pipe specifically designed for such environments. First, through engineering surveys and comparative analysis, the limitations and application demands of conventional circumferential annular drainage blind pipes in highway tunnels were identified. Based on this, the key parameters of the new blind pipe—including material, wall thickness, and aperture size—were determined. Laboratory tests were then conducted to evaluate the performance of the newly developed pipe. Subsequently, the pipe was applied in a real-world tunnel project, where a construction process and an in-service blockage inspection method for circumferential drainage pipes were proposed. Field application results indicate that, compared to commonly used FH50 soft permeable pipes and F100 semi-split spring pipes, the novel curved-mesh drainage blind pipe exhibits superior circumferential load-bearing capacity, anti-clogging performance, and deformation resistance. The proposed structure provides a total permeable area exceeding 17,500 mm2, three to four times larger than that of conventional drainage pipes, effectively meeting the drainage requirements behind tunnel linings in high-water-content zones. The use of four-way connectors enhanced integration with other drainage systems, and inspection of the internal conditions confirmed that the pipe remained free of clogging and deformation. Furthermore, the curved-mesh design offers better conformity with the primary support and demonstrates stronger adaptability to complex installation conditions. Full article

The spatial genes of rural settlements show a lot of different traditional settlement traits, which makes them a great starting point for studying rural spatial morphology. However, qualitative and macro-regional statistical indicators are usually used to find and extract rural settlement spatial genes. Taking Yubei Village in the Nanxi River Basin as an example, this study combined remote sensing images, real-time drone mapping, GIS (geographic information system), and space syntax, extracted 12 key indicators from five dimensions (landform and water features (environment), boundary morphology, spatial structure, street scale, and building scale), and quantitatively “decoded” the spatial genes of the settlement. The results showed that (1) the settlement is a “three mountains and one water” pattern, with cultivated land accounting for 37.4% and forest land accounting for 34.3% of the area within the 500 m buffer zone, while the landscape spatial diversity index (LSDI) is 0.708. (2) The boundary morphology is compact and agglomerated, and locally complex but overall orderly, with an aspect ratio of 1.04, a comprehensive morphological index of 1.53, and a comprehensive fractal dimension of 1.31. (3) The settlement is a “clan core–radial lane” network: the global integration degree of the axis to the holy hall is the highest (0.707), and the local integration degree R3 peak of the six-room ancestral hall reaches 2.255. Most lane widths are concentrated between 1.2 and 2.8 m, and the eaves are mostly higher than 4 m, forming a typical “narrow lanes and high houses” water town streetscape. (4) The architectural style is a combination of black bricks and gray tiles, gable roofs and horsehead walls, and “I”-shaped planes (63.95%). This study ultimately constructed a settlement space gene map and digital library, providing a replicable quantitative process for the diagnosis of Jiangnan water town settlements and heritage protection planning. The in situ emulsification synergistic self-profile control system has wide application prospects for efficient development on offshore oil reservoirs. During water flooding in Bohai heavy oil reservoirs, random emulsification occurs with superimposed Jamin effects. Effectively utilizing this phenomenon can enhance the efficient development of offshore oilfields. This study addresses the challenges hindering water flooding development in offshore oilfields by investigating the emulsification mechanism and key influencing factors based on oil–water emulsion characteristics, thereby proposing a novel in situ emulsification flooding method. Based on a fundamental analysis of oil–water properties, key factors affecting emulsion stability were examined. Core flooding experiments clarified the impact of spontaneous oil–water emulsification on water flooding recovery. Two-dimensional T1–T2 NMR spectroscopy was employed to detect pure fluid components, innovating the method for distinguishing oil–water distribution during flooding and revealing the characteristics of in situ emulsification interactions. The results indicate that emulsions formed between crude oil and formation water under varying rheometer rotational speeds (500–2500 r/min), water cuts (30–80%), and emulsification temperatures (40–85 °C) are all water-in-oil (W/O) type. Emulsion viscosity exhibits a positive correlation with shear rate, with droplet sizes primarily ranging between 2 and 7 μm and a viscosity amplification factor up to 25.8. Emulsion stability deteriorates with increasing water cut and temperature. Prolonged shearing initially increases viscosity until stabilization. In low-permeability cores, spontaneous oil–water emulsification occurs, yielding a recovery factor of only 30%. For medium- and high-permeability cores (water cuts of 80% and 50%, respectively), recovery factors increased by 9.7% and 12%. The in situ generation of micron-scale emulsions in porous media achieved a recovery factor of approximately 50%, demonstrating significantly enhanced oil recovery (EOR) potential. During emulsification flooding, the system emulsifies oil at pore walls, intensifying water–wall interactions and stripping wall-adhered oil, leading to increased T2 signal intensity and reduced relaxation time. Oil–wall interactions and collision frequencies are lower than those of water, which appears in high-relaxation regions (T1/T2 > 5). The two-dimensional NMR spectrum clearly distinguishes oil and water distributions. Full article

This study investigates the hydrodynamic performance of ships entering a ship lift compartment that is under the influence of upstream channel geometry and proposes a mechanical traction scheme to enhance operational safety and efficiency. Utilizing a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS)-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach with overlapping grid technology, numerical simulations were conducted for both single and grouped ships navigating through varying water depths, speeds, and shore distances. The results revealed significant transverse force oscillations near the floating navigation wall due to unilateral shore effects, posing risks of deviation. The cargo ship experienced drastic resistance fluctuations in shallow-to-very-shallow-water transitions, while tugboats were notably affected by hydrodynamic interactions during group entry. A mechanical traction system with a four-link robotic arm was designed and analyzed kinematically and statically, demonstrating structural feasibility under converted real-ship traction forces (55.1 kN). The key findings emphasize the need for collision avoidance measures in wall sections and validate the proposed traction scheme for safe and efficient ship entry/exit. This research provides critical insights for optimizing ship lift operations in restricted waters. Full article

The innovation in thermal storage systems for solar thermal power generation is crucial for achieving efficient utilization of new energy sources. Molten salt has been extensively studied as a phase change material (PCM) for latent heat thermal energy storage systems. In this study, a two-dimensional model of a vertical shell-and-tube heat exchanger is developed, utilizing water-steam as the heat transfer fluid (HTF) and phase change material for heat transfer analysis. Through numerical simulations, we explore the interplay between PCM solidification and HTF boiling. The transient results show that tube length affects water boiling duration and PCM solidification thickness. Higher heat transfer fluid flow rates lower solidified PCM temperatures, while lower heat transfer fluid inlet temperatures delay boiling and shorten durations, forming thicker PCM solidification layers. Adding fins to the tube wall boosts heat transfer efficiency by increasing contact area with the phase change material. This extension of boiling time facilitates greater PCM solidification, although it may not always optimize the alignment of bundles within the thermal energy storage system. Full article

Aircraft wing surface icing compromises flight safety, where accurate calculation of heat transfer coefficient on airfoil surfaces serves as a prerequisite for designing thermal anti-icing systems. However, during icing conditions, ice morphology changes wall roughness and transition properties, making it difficult to accurately determine the heat transfer coefficient. The current study develops a partitioned rough-wall boundary layer integral methodology in order to overcome this issue, extending the conventional boundary layer integral method. The technique generates a convective heat transfer coefficient formulation for aircraft icing surfaces while accounting for roughness differences brought on by water droplet shape. The results show that the partitioned rough-wall boundary layer integral method divides the wing surface into three distinct zones based on water droplet dynamics—a smooth zone, rough zone, and runback zone—each associated with specific roughness values. The NACA0012 airfoil was used for numerical validation, which showed that computational and experimental data concur well. Additionally, the suggested approach predicts transition locations with a high degree of agreement with experimental results. Full article

Passenger safety remains a primary goal in vehicle engineering, requiring the development of advanced passive safety systems to reduce injuries during collisions. Impact attenuators (particularly for race cars) are a crucial component for the safety of the driver. The impact of the impact attenuator (IA) is demonstrated by the behavior of a seat-belted dummy in a frontal collision with a rigid wall. The aim of this paper is to confirm the qualities of water as a damping agent in the manufacturing of the IA. To reach a conclusion, a theoretical model is used and experimental tests are performed. Once the loads operating on the dummy have been identified, it is confirmed that they fall within the range that the existing requirements recommend. The car is viewed as a structure with a seat-belt-fastened dummy and an impact attenuator. Research is being conducted on a new water-based impact attenuator technology. A frontal collision of the car–dummy assembly was taken into consideration when analyzing the dummy’s behavior in accordance with the criteria. A simulation program was used to calculate the accelerations at various points on the mannequin’s body as well as the force that manifested on the seat belts. So, the good qualities of IAs using water are revealed and support designers in their efforts to obtain better shock behavior. In the simulation, the variation of internal energy accumulated by the vehicle, displacements and velocities of various points on the chassis, as well as the accelerations of the vehicle and the occupant were determined. In the experiment, the vehicle velocities for both test cases were established and used in the simulation, and the accelerations of the vehicle and dummy were measured. The assessment was carried out by comparing experimental and simulation data, focusing on acceleration values recorded on both the dummy and the vehicle. Evaluation criteria such as HIC and ThAC were applied to determine the severity of the impact and the effectiveness of the proposed water-based attenuator. Full article

Combustion processes in compression ignition engines lead to the inevitable generation of nitrogen oxides, which cannot be limited to the currently desired levels just by optimising the in-cylinder processes. Therefore, simulation-based engine development needs to include all engine-related aspects which contribute to tailpipe emissions. Among them, the SCR (selective catalytic reduction) aftertreatment-related processes, such as urea–water solution injection, urea decomposition, mixing, NOx catalytic reduction, and deposits’ formation, are the most challenging, and require as much attention as the processes taking place inside the cylinder. Over the last decade, the urea-SCR aftertreatment systems have evolved from underfloor designs to close-coupled (to the engine) architecture, characterised by the short mixing length. Therefore, they need to be tailor-made for each application. This study presents the CFD-based development of a multi-platform SCR system with a short mixing length for mobile non-road applications, compliant with Stage V NRE-v/c-5 emission standard. It combines multiphase dispersed flow, including wall wetting and urea decomposition kinetic reaction modelling to account for the critical aspects of the SCR system operation. The baseline system’s design was characterised by the severe deposit formation near the mixer’s outlet, which was attributed to the intensive cooling in the mounting area. Moreover, as the simulations suggested, the spray was not appropriately mixed with the surrounding gas in its primary zone. The proposed measures to reduce the wall film formation needed to account for the multi-platform application (ranging from 56 to 130 kW) and large-scale production capability. The performed simulations led to the system design, providing excellent UWS–exhaust gas mixing without a solid deposit formation. The developed system was designed to be manufactured and implemented in large-scale series production. Full article

The Subsurface self-regulating, Low-Energy, Clay-based Irrigation (SLECI) system is a recently developed irrigation method. The SLECI system supplies water directly to the crop root zone by utilising the potential difference established between its permeable interior and exterior radial walls. In this study, we investigated the effect of the SLECI emitter’s operating pressure head and burial depth on the water flow characteristics in sandy loam soil. The results show that the developed COMSOL-2D model accurately predicted water flow characteristic under SLECI. The operating pressure head significantly influenced the water flow characteristics. As the operating pressure head increased, emitter discharge increased, and the wetted soil area was extended. The burial depth had a minimal effect on the emitter discharge but notably affected the advancement and time at which wetting fronts reached the soil surface and bottom boundaries. Operating the SLECI emitter at a higher operating pressure head and shallower burial depth could degrade irrigation water application and water use efficiencies. Based on a multi-objective optimisation algorithm, we recommend that the SLECI emitter be operated at a 125 cm pressure head and buried at 40 cm for crops with a root zone depth of 100 cm. Our study is expected to provide a greater understanding of the SLECI system and offer some recommendations and guidelines for its efficient deployment in sandy loam for enhanced water use efficiency in crop production. The focus of this paper is placed on Oscillating Water Column (OWC) systems. The primary aim is to analyze, through both mathematical modeling and numerical simulations, a single module (chamber) of an OWC plant which, in addition to energy production, offers the dual advantage of large-scale integration into port infrastructures or coastal defense structures such as breakwaters, etc. The core challenge lies in optimizing the geometry of the OWC chamber and its associated ducts. A trapezoidal cross-section is adopted, with various front wall inclinations ranging from 90° to 45°. This geometric parameter significantly affects both the internal compression ratio and the hydrodynamic behavior of incoming and outgoing waves. Certain inclinations revealed increased turbulence and notable interference with waves reflected from the chamber bottom which determined an unexpected drop in efficiency. The optimal performance occurred at an inclination of approximately 55°, yielding an efficiency of around 12.8%, because it represents the most advantageous and balanced compromise between counter-trend phenomena. A detailed analysis is carried out on several key parameters for the different configurations (e.g., internal and external wave elevations, crest phase shifts, pressures, hydraulic loads, efficiency, etc.) to reach the most in-depth analysis possible of the complex phenomena that come into play. Lastly, the study also discusses the additional structural and functional benefits of inclined walls over traditional parallelepiped-shaped chambers, both from a structural and construction point of view, and for the possible use for coastal defense. This study numerically investigates unsteady natural convection (NC) heat transfer (HT) and entropy generation (Egen) in trapezoidal cavities filled with two thermally stratified fluids. Both air-filled and water-filled configurations are analyzed to evaluate and compare their thermal performance under varying conditions. The cavities are characterized by a heated base, thermally stratified sloped walls, and a cooled top wall. The governing equations are numerically solved using the finite volume (FV) approach. The study considers a Prandtl number (Pr) of 0.71 for air and 7.01 for water, Rayleigh numbers (Ra) ranging from 103 to 5 × 107, and an aspect ratio (AR) of 0.5. Flow behavior is examined through various parameters, including temperature time series (TTS), average Nusselt number (Nu), average entropy generation (Eavg), average Bejan number (Beavg), and ecological coefficient of performance (ECOP). Three bifurcations are identified during the transition from steady to chaotic flow for both fluids. The first is a pitchfork bifurcation, occurring between Ra = 105 and 2 × 105 for air, and between Ra = 9 × 104 and 105 for water. The second, a Hopf bifurcation, is observed between Ra = 4.7 × 105 and 4.8 × 105 for air, and between Ra = 105 and 2 × 105 for water. The third bifurcation marks the onset of chaotic flow, occurring between Ra = 3 × 107 and 4 × 107 for air, and between Ra = 4 × 105 and 5 × 105 for water. At Ra = 106, the average HT in the air-filled cavity is 85.35% higher than in the water-filled cavity, while Eavg is 94.54% greater in the air-filled cavity compared to water-filled cavity. At Ra = 106, the thermal performance of the cavity filled with water is 4.96% better than that of the air-filled cavity. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing thermal systems using trapezoidal cavities and varying working fluids. Full article

While carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)—a biocompatible and water-soluble cellulose derivative—holds promise for biomedical applications, challenges remain in synthesizing CMC-based hydrogels with covalent crosslinking through free radical polymerization without requiring complex, multi-step processes. In this study, we introduce a facile one-pot strategy that combines CMC with acrylamide (AAm) under cryogelation and low-intensity UV irradiation to achieve covalent bonding and a high polymerization yield. The resulting polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl cellulose (PAAm/CMC) porous gels were systematically evaluated for their chemical, physical, thermal, and drug-release properties, with a focus on the effects of AAm concentration and polymerization temperature (frozen vs. room temperature). Notably, the cryogel synthesized with 2.5 M AAm (PC2.5) exhibited significantly enhanced mechanical properties—that is, an 8.4-fold increase in tensile modulus and a 26-fold increase in toughness—compared with the non-cryo gel. Moreover, PC2.5 demonstrated excellent cyclic compression stability in water and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), with less than 10% reduction in modulus after 100 cycles. These increases in the mechanical properties of PC2.5 are attributed to the formation of macropores with high polymer density and high crosslinking density at the pore walls. PC2.5 also showed slower drug release in PBS and good cytocompatibility. This study presents a simplified and efficient route for fabricating mechanically robust, covalently crosslinked PAAm/CMC cryogels, highlighting their strong potential for biomedical applications in drug delivery systems. In water-rich strata, a traditional vertical barrier exhibits certain limitations when applied to deep foundation pit construction under complex geological conditions, such as it is difficult to completely cut off deep and thick aquifer, which may pose potential risks during pit dewatering. To address the above challenge, this study introduced a mixed barrier system in which the horizontal barrier (HB) was set at the bottom of the foundation pit and was combined with the enclosure wall to collectively retard groundwater seepage into the pit. Based on an actual project in Tianjin, this study established HB models with varying numbers of its layers using ABAQUS 6.14 software. It systematically investigated the effect of HB on groundwater drawdown, ground surface settlement, and enclosure deflection during foundation pit dewatering. The research shows that HB can significantly reduce the magnitude of external water level drawdown by altering groundwater seepage paths while effectively controlling soil settlement. Furthermore, it exhibits favorable overall restraining effects on wall deformation. Varying the number of horizontal barrier layers (L) exhibits an insignificant effect on water-blocking and subsidence-control performance. However, the constraint effect on the enclosure shows a correlation with L. Full article

The instability of mine roadways is significantly influenced by the coupled effects of groundwater seepage and non-uniform loading. These interactions often induce localized plastic deformation and progressive failure, particularly in the roof and sidewall regions. Seepage elevates pore water pressure and deteriorates the mechanical properties of the rock mass, while non-uniform loading leads to stress concentration. The combined effect facilitates the propagation of microcracks and the formation of shear zones, ultimately resulting in localized instability. This initial damage disrupts the mechanical equilibrium and can evolve into severe geohazards, including roof collapse, water inrush, and rockburst. Therefore, understanding the damage and failure mechanisms of mine roadways at the mesoscale, under the combined influence of stress heterogeneity and hydraulic weakening, is of critical importance based on laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. However, the large scale of in situ roadway structures imposes significant constraints on full-scale physical modeling due to limitations in laboratory space and loading capacity. To address these challenges, a straight-wall circular arch roadway was adopted as the geometric prototype, with a total height of 4 m (2 m for the straight wall and 2 m for the arch), a base width of 4 m, and an arch radius of 2 m. Scaled physical models were fabricated based on geometric similarity principles, using defect-bearing sandstone specimens with dimensions of 100 mm × 30 mm × 100 mm (length × width × height) and pore-type defects measuring 40 mm × 20 mm × 20 mm (base × wall height × arch radius), to replicate the stress distribution and deformation behavior of the prototype. Uniaxial compression tests on water-saturated sandstone specimens were performed using a TAW-2000 electro-hydraulic servo testing system. The failure process was continuously monitored through acoustic emission (AE) techniques and static strain acquisition systems. Concurrently, FLAC3D 6.0 numerical simulations were employed to analyze the evolution of internal stress fields and the spatial distribution of plastic zones in saturated sandstone containing pore defects. Experimental results indicate that under non-uniform loading, the stress–strain curves of saturated sandstone with pore-type defects typically exhibit four distinct deformation stages. The extent of crack initiation, propagation, and coalescence is strongly correlated with the magnitude and heterogeneity of localized stress concentrations. AE parameters, including ringing counts and peak frequencies, reveal pronounced spatial partitioning. The internal stress field exhibits an overall banded pattern, with localized variations induced by stress anisotropy. Numerical simulation results further show that shear failure zones tend to cluster regionally, while tensile failure zones are more evenly distributed. Additionally, the stress field configuration at the specimen crown significantly influences the dispersion characteristics of the stress–strain response. These findings offer valuable theoretical insights and practical guidance for surrounding rock control, early warning systems, and reinforcement strategies in water-infiltrated mine roadways subjected to non-uniform loading conditions. Petroleum is an indispensable energy source in modern industrial society, and maintaining the safe and stable operation of its injection and production system is of great significance. To analyze the mechanism of pipeline damage caused by corrosion and scaling in the injection production system, taking a water injection pipeline in an oil field as an example, the causes of corrosion and scaling damage were studied by detecting pipeline samples and analyzing corrosion products and various service conditions of the pipeline. The results showed that there was more scaling on the inner wall of the pipeline, and there was local corrosion in the pipeline sections that had experienced water injection, shutdown, and gas injection conditions, while there was no significant corrosion thinning in the pipeline sections that had only experienced water injection and shutdown conditions. The scale layer formed under water injection conditions is mainly composed of barium strontium sulfate (Ba0.75Sr0.25SO4), barium sulfate (BaSO4) and a small amount of silica (SiO2). The main reason for scale formation is the high content of barium ions (Ba2+) in the injected water. The corrosion products formed under gas injection conditions, including strontium ions (Sr2+) and sulfate ions (SO42−), are mainly composed of ferrous carbonate (FeCO3) and ferric oxide (Fe2O3). The pipeline corrosion product FeCO3 is mainly caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) in the medium. In addition, the high liquid content, cecal position, high Cl (chloride ion) content, and slightly acidic environment in the pipeline also accelerate the occurrence of corrosion damage. The Fe2O3 in the corrosion products is formed when the pipeline is exposed to air after sampling, and is not the main cause of pipeline corrosion. Full article
