Background/Objectives: Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and demands precise segmentation and classification of nuclei for effective diagnosis and disease severity assessment. This study aims to evaluate the performance of HoVerNet, a deep learning model, for nuclei segmentation and classification in CMYC-stained whole slide images and to assess its integration into a user-friendly diagnostic tool. Methods: A dataset of 122 CMYC-stained whole slide images (WSIs) was used. Pre-processing steps, including stain normalization and patch extraction, were applied to improve input consistency. HoVerNet, a multi-branch neural network, was used for both nuclei segmentation and classification, particularly focusing on its ability to manage overlapping nuclei and complex morphological variations. Model performance was validated using metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. Additionally, a graphic user interface (GUI) was developed to incorporate automated segmentation, cell counting, and severity assessment functionalities. Results: HoVerNet achieved a validation accuracy of 82.5%, with a precision of 85.3%, recall of 82.6%, and an F1 score of 83.9%. The model showed powerful performance in differentiating overlapping and morphologically complex nuclei. The developed GUI enabled real-time visualization and diagnostic support, enhancing the efficiency and usability of DLBCL histopathological analysis. Conclusions: HoVerNet, combined with an integrated GUI, presents a promising approach for streamlining DLBCL diagnostics through accurate segmentation and real-time visualization. Future work will focus on incorporating Vision Transformers and additional staining protocols to improve generalizability and clinical utility. Full article

Against the backdrop of multifaceted strategies to combat climate change, understanding soil erosion’s role in carbon cycling is critical due to terrestrial carbon pool vulnerability. This study integrates bibliometric methods with visualization tools (CiteSpace, VOSviewer) to analyze 3880 Web of Science core publications (1994–2024, inclusive), constructing knowledge graphs and forecasting trends. The results show exponential publication growth, shifting from slow development (1994–2011) to rapid expansion (2012–2024), aligning with international climate policy milestones. The Chinese Academy of Sciences led productivity (519 articles), while the US demonstrated major influence (H-index 117; 52,297 citations), creating a China–US bipolar research pattern. It was also found that Dutch journals dominate this research field. A keyword analysis revealed a shift from erosion-driven carbon transport to ecosystem service assessments. Emerging hotspots include microbial community regulation, climate–erosion feedback, and model–policy integration, though developing country collaboration remains limited. Future research should prioritize isotope tracing, multiscale modeling, and studies in ecologically vulnerable regions to enhance global soil carbon management. This study provides a novel analytical framework and forward-looking perspective for the soil erosion research on soil carbon cycling, serving as an extension of climate change mitigation strategies. Dynamic and Adaptive solar systems demonstrate a greater potential to enhance the satisfaction of occupants, in terms of indoor environment quality and the energy efficiency of the buildings, than conventional shading solutions. This study has evaluated Dynamic and Adaptive Photovoltaic Shading Systems (DAPVSSs) through a comprehensive analysis of six shading designs in which their energy production and the comfort of occupants were considered. Energy generation, thermal comfort, daylight, and glare control have been assessed in this study, considering multiple orientations throughout the seasons, and a variety of tools, such as Rhino 6.0, Grasshopper, ClimateStudio 2.1, and Ladybug, have been exploited for these purposes. The results showed that the prototypes that were geometrically more complex, designs 5 and 6 in particular, had approximately 485 kWh higher energy production and energy savings for cooling and 48% better glare control than the other simplified configurations while maintaining the minimum daylight as the threshold (min DF: 2%) due to adaptive and control methodologies. Design 6 demonstrated optimal balanced performance for all the aforementioned criteria, achieving 587 kWh/year energy production while maintaining the daylight factor within the 2.1–2.9% optimal range and ensuring visual comfort compliance during 94% of occupied hours. This research has established a framework that can be used to make well-informed design decisions that could balance energy production, occupants’ wellbeing, and architectural integration, while advancing sustainable building envelope technologies. The classification of submarine topography and geomorphology is essential for marine resource exploitation and ocean engineering, with wide-ranging implications in marine geology, disaster assessment, resource exploration, and autonomous underwater navigation. Submarine landscapes are highly complex and diverse. Traditional visual interpretation methods are not only inefficient and subjective but also lack the precision required for high-accuracy classification. While many machine learning and deep learning models have achieved promising results in image classification, limited work has been performed on integrating backscatter and bathymetric data for multi-source processing. Existing approaches often suffer from high computational costs and excessive hyperparameter demands. In this study, we propose a novel approach that integrates pruning-enhanced ConDenseNet with label smoothing regularization to reduce misclassification, strengthen the cross-entropy loss function, and significantly lower model complexity. Our method improves classification accuracy by 2% to 10%, reduces the number of hyperparameters by 50% to 96%, and cuts computation time by 50% to 85.5% compared to state-of-the-art models, including AlexNet, VGG, ResNet, and Vision Transformer. These results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our model for multi-source submarine topography classification. Full article

Timely and accurate identification of surface damage in hydraulic structures is essential for maintaining structural integrity and ensuring operational safety. Traditional manual inspections are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to subjectivity, especially for large-scale or inaccessible infrastructure. Leveraging advancements in aerial imaging, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enable efficient acquisition of high-resolution visual data across expansive hydraulic environments. However, existing deep learning (DL) models often lack architectural adaptations for the visual complexities of UAV imagery, including low-texture contrast, noise interference, and irregular crack patterns. To address these challenges, this study proposes a lightweight, robust, and high-precision segmentation framework, called LFPA-EAM-Fast-SCNN, specifically designed for pixel-level damage detection in UAV-captured images of hydraulic concrete surfaces. The developed DL-based model integrates an enhanced Fast-SCNN backbone for efficient feature extraction, a Lightweight Feature Pyramid Attention (LFPA) module for multi-scale context enhancement, and an Edge Attention Module (EAM) for refined boundary localization. The experimental results on a custom UAV-based dataset show that the proposed damage detection method achieves superior performance, with a precision of 0.949, a recall of 0.892, an F1 score of 0.906, and an IoU of 87.92%, outperforming U-Net, Attention U-Net, SegNet, DeepLab v3+, I-ST-UNet, and SegFormer. Additionally, it reaches a real-time inference speed of 56.31 FPS, significantly surpassing other models. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed framework’s strong generalization capability and robustness under varying noise levels and damage scenarios, underscoring its suitability for scalable, automated surface damage assessment in UAV-based remote sensing of civil infrastructure. The lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) is a widely utilized, rapid diagnostic technique characterized by its short analysis duration, cost efficiency, visual result interpretation, portability and suitability for point-of-care applications. However, conventional LFIAs have limited sensitivity, a challenge that can be overcome by the introduction of gold nanoparticles, which provide enhanced sensitivity and selectivity (compared, for example, to latex beads or carbon nanoparticles) for the detection of target analytes, due to their optical properties, chemical stability and ease of functionalization. In this work, gold nanoparticle-based LFIAs are developed for the detection of aflatoxin B1, and the relative performance of different morphology particles is evaluated. LFIA using gold nano-labels allowed for aflatoxin B1 detection over a range of 0.01 ng/mL–100 ng/mL. Compared to spherical gold nanoparticles and gold nano-flowers, star-shaped gold nanoparticles show increased antibody binding efficiency of 86% due to their greater surface area. Gold nano-stars demonstrated the highest sensitivity, achieving a limit of detection of 0.01ng/mL, surpassing the performance of both spherical gold nanoparticles and gold nano-flowers. The use of star-shaped particles as nano-labels has demonstrated a five-fold improvement in sensitivity, underscoring the potential of integrating diverse nanostructures into LFIA for significantly improving analyte detection. Moreover, the robustness and feasibility of gold nano-stars employed as labels in LFIA was assessed in detecting aflatoxin B1 in a wheat matrix. Improved sensitivity with gold nano-stars holds promise for applications in food safety monitoring, public health diagnostics and rapid point-of-care diagnostics. This work opens the pathway for further development of LFIA utilizing novel nanostructures to achieve unparallel precision in diagnostics and sensing. Full article

The double wishbone suspension (DWS) system is widely used in automotive engineering because of its favorable kinematic properties, which affect vehicle dynamics, handling, and ride comfort; hence, it is important to have an accurate 3D model, simulation, and analysis of the system in order to optimize its design. This requires efficient computational tools for parametric study. The development of effective computational tools that support parametric exploration stands as an essential requirement. Our research demonstrates a complete Wolfram Mathematica system that creates parametric 3D kinematic models and conducts simulations, performs analyses, and generates interactive visualizations of DWS systems. The system uses homogeneous transformation matrices to establish the spatial relationships between components relative to a global coordinate system. The symbolic geometric parameters allow designers to perform flexible design exploration and the kinematic constraints create an algebraic equation system. The numerical solution function NSolve computes linkage positions from input data, which enables fast evaluation of different design parameters. The integrated 3D visualization module based on Mathematica’s manipulate function enables users to see immediate results of geometric configurations and parameter effects while calculating exact 3D coordinates. The resulting robust, systematic, and flexible computational environment integrates parametric 3D design, kinematic simulation, analysis, and dynamic visualization for DWS, serving as a valuable and efficient tool for engineers during the design, development, assessment, and optimization phases of these complex automotive systems. Gas sensors are considered a highly effective non-destructive technique for monitoring the quality and safety of food materials. These intelligent sensors can detect volatile profiles emitted by food products, providing valuable information on the changes occurring within the food. Gas sensors have garnered significant interest for their numerous advantages in the development of food safety monitoring systems. The adaptable characteristics of gas sensors make them ideal for integration into production lines, while the flexibility of certain sensor types allows for incorporation into packaging materials. Various types of gas sensors have been developed for their distinct properties and are utilized in a wide range of applications. Metal-oxide semiconductors and optical sensors are widely studied for their potential use as gas sensors in food quality assessments due to their ability to provide visual indicators to consumers. The advancement of new nanomaterials and their integration with advanced data acquisition techniques is expected to enhance the performance and utility of sensors in sustainable practices within the food supply chain. Background/Objectives: The simulation of human movement offers transformative potential for the design of medical devices, particularly in understanding the cause–effect dynamics in individuals with neurological or musculoskeletal impairments. This study presents a simulation-driven framework to determine the optimal ankle–foot orthosis (AFO) stiffness for mitigating the risk of ankle sprains due to excessive subtalar inversion during high-impact activities, such as landing from a free fall. Methods: We employed biomechanical simulations to assess the influence of translational stiffness on subtalar inversion control, given that inversion angles exceeding 25 degrees are strongly correlated with injury risk. Simulations were conducted using a musculoskeletal model with and without a passive AFO; the stiffness varied in three anatomical directions. A Design of Experiments (DoE) approach was utilized to capture nonlinear interactions among stiffness parameters. Results: The results indicated that increased translational stiffness significantly reduced inversion angles to safer levels, though direction–dependent effects were noted. Based on these insights, we developed a 4D visualization tool that integrates simulation data with an interactive color–coded interface to depict ”safe design” zones for various AFO stiffness configurations. This tool supports clinicians in selecting stiffness values that optimize both safety and functional performance. Conclusions: The proposed framework enhances clinical decision-making and engineering processes by enabling more accurate and individualized AFO designs. Full article

Monitoring crop damage caused by wildlife remains a significant challenge in agricultural management, particularly in the case of large-scale monocultures such as maize. The given study presents a semi-automated process for detecting wildlife-induced damage using RGB imagery acquired from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The method is designed for non-specialist users and is fully integrated within the QGIS platform. The proposed approach involves calculating three vegetation indices—Excess Green (ExG), Green Leaf Index (GLI), and Modified Green-Red Vegetation Index (MGRVI)—based on a standardized orthomosaic generated from RGB images collected via UAV. Subsequently, an unsupervised k-means clustering algorithm was applied to divide the field into five vegetation vigor classes. Within each class, 25% of the pixels with the lowest average index values were preliminarily classified as damaged. A dedicated QGIS plugin enables drone data analysts (Drone Data Analysts—DDAs) to adjust index thresholds, based on visual interpretation, interactively. The method was validated on a 50-hectare maize field, where 7 hectares of damage (15% of the area) were identified. The results indicate a high level of agreement between the automated and manual classifications, with an overall accuracy of 81%. The highest concentration of damage occurred in the “moderate” and “low” vigor zones. Final products included vigor classification maps, binary damage masks, and summary reports in HTML and DOCX formats with visualizations and statistical data. The results confirm the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed RGB-based procedure for crop damage assessment. The method offers a repeatable, cost-effective, and field-operable alternative to multispectral or AI-based approaches, making it suitable for integration with precision agriculture practices and wildlife population management. The integration of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) into Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes is becoming increasingly important for enhancing the environmental performance of construction projects. This scoping review examines how LCA methods and environmental data are currently integrated into BIM workflows, focusing on automation, data standardization, and visualization strategies. We selected 43 peer-reviewed studies (January 2010–May 2025) via structured searches in five major academic databases. The review identifies five main types of BIM–LCA integration workflows; the most common approach involves exporting quantity data from BIM models to external LCA tools. More recent studies explore the use of artificial intelligence for improving automation and accuracy in data mapping between BIM objects and LCA databases. Key challenges include inconsistent levels of data granularity, a lack of harmonized EPD formats, and limited interoperability between BIM and LCA software environments. Visualization methods such as color-coded 3D models are used to support early-stage decision-making, although uncertainty representation remains limited. To address these issues, future research should focus on standardizing EPD data structures, enriching BIM objects with validated environmental information, and developing explainable AI solutions for automated classification and matching. These advancements would improve the reliability and usability of LCA in BIM-based design, contributing to more informed decisions in sustainable construction. Full article

Corrosion in maritime ballast tanks is a major driver of maintenance costs and operational risks for maritime assets. Inspections are hampered by complex geometries, hazardous conditions, and the limitations of conventional methods, particularly visual assessment, which struggles with subjectivity, accessibility, and early detection, especially under coatings. This paper critically examines these challenges and explores the potential of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) to form the basis of improved inspection approaches. We discuss LiDAR’s utility for accurate 3D mapping and providing a spatial framework and HSI’s potential for objective material identification and surface characterization based on spectral signatures along a wavelength range of 400-1000nm (visible and near infrared). Preliminary findings from laboratory tests are presented, demonstrating the basic feasibility of HSI for differentiating surface conditions (corrosion, coatings, bare metal) and relative coating thickness, alongside LiDAR’s capability for detailed geometric capture. Although these results do not represent a deployable system, they highlight how LiDAR and HSI could address key limitations of current practices and suggest promising directions for future research into integrated sensor-based corrosion assessment strategies. History tools facilitate iterative analysis data by allowing users to view, retrieve, and revisit visualization states. However, traditional history tools are constrained by screen space limitations, which restrict the user’s ability to fully understand historical states and make it challenging to provide an intuitive preview of these states. Most immersive history tools, in contrast, operate independently of screen space and fail to consider their integration. This paper proposes HybridFilm, an innovative mixed-reality history tool that seamlessly integrates screen space and immersive reality. First, it expands the user’s understanding of historical states through a multi-source spatial fusion approach. Second, it proposes a “focus + context”-based multi-source spatial historical data visualization and interaction scheme. Furthermore, we assessed the usability and utility of HybridFilm through experimental evaluation. In comparison to traditional history tools, HybridFilm offers a more intuitive and immersive experience while maintaining a comparable level of interaction comfort and fluency. Full article

Background: Postoperative pain management after a cesarean section remains a significant challenge, as inadequate control can delay maternal recovery and hinder early bonding and breastfeeding. While multimodal analgesia is the standard approach, non–pharmacological strategies like immediate skin–to–skin contact (SSC) are often underused despite their potential benefits in reducing pain, improving uterine contractions, and increasing maternal satisfaction. Objective: To evaluate the effects of immediate SSC on postoperative pain perception, uterine contraction quality, and maternal satisfaction, and to explore ways to incorporate SSC into routine post–cesarean care to promote recovery and humanized care. Method: A randomized clinical trial was conducted with 80 women undergoing elective cesarean sections, divided into two groups: SSC (40 women) and control (40 women). Postoperative pain was measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) at various intervals, while uterine contraction quality and maternal satisfaction were assessed through clinical observation and a Likert scale, respectively. Results: We found that women in the SSC group experienced significantly lower pain scores (VAS2 and VAS3, p < 0.001), stronger infraumbilical uterine contractions (92.5%, p < 0.001), and higher satisfaction levels (average 9.98 vs. 6.50, p < 0.001). An inverse correlation was observed between pain intensity and satisfaction, indicating that SSC enhances both physiological and psychological recovery. Conclusions: Immediate SSC after cesarean is an effective, humanizing intervention that reduces pain, supports uterine contractions, and boosts maternal satisfaction. These findings advocate for integrating SSC into standard postoperative care, aligning with ethical principles of beneficence and autonomy. Further research with larger samples is necessary to confirm these benefits and facilitate widespread adoption in maternity protocols. Full article

A Multimodal MRI-Based Model for Colorectal Liver Metastasis Prediction: Integrating Radiomics, Deep Learning, and Clinical Features with SHAP Interpretation

Purpose: Predicting colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM) is essential for prognostic assessment. This study aims to develop and validate an interpretable multimodal machine learning framework based on multiparametric MRI for predicting CRLM, and to enhance the clinical interpretability of the model through SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis and deep learning visualization. Methods: This multicenter retrospective study included 463 patients with pathologically confirmed colorectal cancer from two institutions, divided into training (n = 256), internal testing (n = 111), and external validation (n = 96) sets. Radiomics features were extracted from manually segmented regions on axial T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Deep learning features were obtained from a pretrained ResNet101 network using the same MRI inputs. A least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) logistic regression classifier was developed for clinical, radiomics, deep learning, and combined models. Model performance was evaluated by AUC, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-score. SHAP was used to assess feature contributions, and Grad-CAM was applied to visualize deep feature attention. Results: The combined model integrating features across the three modalities achieved the highest performance across all datasets, with AUCs of 0.889 (training), 0.838 (internal test), and 0.822 (external validation), outperforming single-modality models. Decision curve analysis (DCA) revealed enhanced clinical net benefit from the integrated model, while calibration curves confirmed its good predictive consistency. SHAP analysis revealed that radiomic features related to T2WI texture (e.g., LargeDependenceLowGrayLevelEmphasis) and clinical biomarkers (e.g., CA19-9) were among the most predictive for CRLM. Grad-CAM visualizations confirmed that the deep learning model focused on tumor regions consistent with radiological interpretation. Conclusions: This study presents a robust and interpretable multiparametric MRI-based model for noninvasively predicting liver metastasis in colorectal cancer patients. By integrating handcrafted radiomics and deep learning features, and enhancing transparency through SHAP and Grad-CAM, the model provides both high predictive performance and clinically meaningful explanations. These findings highlight its potential value as a decision-support tool for individualized risk assessment and treatment planning in the management of colorectal cancer. Full article
