Rose hips are rich in polyphenols, making them a promising ingredient for the development of functional fruit-based beverages. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) extraction treatment on rose hip (RH) pulp to enhance the extraction of polyphenols, carotenoids, and volatile compounds. Additionally, this study examined the impact of adding rose hip berries during different stages of carbohydrate fermentation on the resulting phenolic and aroma profiles. A control wort and four experimental formulations were prepared. Rose hip pulp—treated or untreated with PEF—was added either during fermentation or beforehand, and the volatiles produced were analyzed using GC-MS (in triplicate). Fermentation was carried out over 10 days at 20 °C using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Torulaspora delbrueckii. At a 10:1 ratio, all beverage samples were subjected to physicochemical testing and HPLC analysis for polyphenols, organic acids, and carotenoids, as well as GC-MS analysis for aroma compounds. The results demonstrated that the use of PEF-treated rose hips significantly improved phenolic compound extraction. Moreover, the PEF treatment enhanced the aroma profile of the beverage, contributing to a more complex and appealing sensory experience. This research highlights the rich polyphenol content of rose hips and the potential of PEF-treated fruit as a natural ingredient to improve both the functional and sensory qualities of fruit-based beverages. Their application opens new possibilities for the development of innovative, health-promoting drinks in the brewing industry. Full article

Discovering, analyzing, and finding a key to understanding the physiological and biochemical responses that Vitis vinifera L. undertakes against drought stress is of fundamental importance for this profitable crop. Today’s considerable climatic fluctuations force researchers and farmers to focus on this issue with solutions inclined to respect the ecosystem. In this academic work, we focused on describing the drought stress consequences on several parameters of secondary metabolites on Vitis vinifera leaves (quercetins, kaempferol, resveratrol, proline, and xanthophylls) and on some ecophysiological characteristics (e.g., water potential, stomatal conductance, and leaf temperature) to compare the answers that diverse agronomic management techniques (i.e., irrigation with and without zeolite, pure zeolite and no application) could instaurate in the metabolic pathway of this important crop with the aim to find convincing and thought-provoking responses to use this captivating and versatile mineral, the zeolite known as the “magic rock”. Stressed grapevines reached 56.80 mmol/m2s gs at veraison and a more negative stem Ψ (+10.63%) compared to plants with zeolite. Resveratrol, in the hottest season, fluctuated from 0.18–0.19 mg/g in zeolite treatments to 0.37 mg/g in stressed vines. Quercetins were inclined to accumulate in response to drought stress too. In fact, we recorded a peak of quercetin (3-O-glucoside + 3-O-glucuronide) of 11.20 mg/g at veraison in stressed plants. It is interesting to note how the pool of metabolites was often unchanged for plants treated with zeolite and for plants treated with water only, thus elevating this mineral to a “stress reliever”. Climbing vines have recently induced increasing threats to forest growth under favourable environmental changes. In mangrove forests, the native vine Derris trifoliata became invasive and is now one of the main threats. Yet current management relies on manual removal with low efficiency. Exploring an alternative, cost-effective method is required. To assess the potential of a proposed biological control method, this study performed a pot-plant experiment using Cuscuta japonica to infect D. trifoliata and three common mangrove species in Beihai, China. Results showed that D. trifoliata had a higher infection rate and high host mortality (90%) than mangrove (0%). It also had significantly decreased moisture by 4%, nitrogen by 14%, phosphorus by 27%, potassium by 49% and increased soluble sugar by 49% and protein by 20%, whereas only moisture (2% reduction) and one or two minerals of Excoecaria agallocha and Aegiceras corniculatum were influenced. Only Kandelia obovata had neither effective haustoria nor any nutrients impact from the infection. This study indicated that C. japonica can cause more damage to D. trifoliata than to mangrove species and has the potential to be used as a biological control agent for the threatened mangrove forests of A. corniculatum and K. obovata with monitoring and control. Rootstocks are widely used in viticulture as an agronomic measure to cope with biotic and abiotic stresses. In winegrapes, the aroma is one of the major factors defining the quality of grape berries and wines. In the present work, the grape aroma and wine aroma of Cabernet Sauvignon (CS) grafted on three rootstocks were investigated to inform the selection of rootstocks to utilize. 1103P, 5A, and SO4 altered the composition of aromatic volatiles in CS grapes and wines. Among them, 5A and SO4 had less effect on green leaf volatiles in the berries and wines, while 1103P increased green leaf volatile concentrations, up-regulating VvADH2 expression in both vintages. VvLOXA, VvLOXC, VvHPL1, VvADH1, VvADH2, and VvAAT were co-regulated by vintage and rootstock. Orthogonal partial least squares regression analysis (OPLS-DA) showed that the differential compounds in CS/1103P and CS berries were dominated by green leaf volatiles. Furthermore, the concentrations of 1-hexanol in the CS/1103P wines were significantly higher than in the other treatments in the two vintages. 1103P altered the expression of genes in the LOX-HPL pathway and increased the concentration of grape green leaf volatiles such as 1-hexanol and 1-hexanal, while vine vigor also affected green leaf volatile concentrations, the combination of which altered the aromatic composition of the wine and gave it more green flavors. Anchote (Coccinia abyssinica) is a neglected high-potential food and nutrition security tuber crop in Ethiopia. Phenotyping core germplasm collections using agro-morphological and physiological markers is essential for effective crop improvement and utilization. A total of 282 anchote germplasms were profiled using six qualitative and twenty-six quantitative agro-morphological and physiological traits. Augmented Block Design was used for the experiment at the Debre Zeit Agricultural Research Center. The chi-square test and Shannon diversity index indicated the presence of substantial phenotypic variation and diversity among the accessions based on the predominant qualitative traits studied. The quantitative agro-morphological and physiological traits showed wider variability and ranges for the accessions. The broad-sense heritability and genetic advance as a percentage of the mean were notably high for quantitative traits such as root yield, vine length, and leaf area index. A significantly positive correlation was observed among agronomically important traits such as root yield and root diameter as well as root yield and leaf area. The principal component analysis for qualitative and quantitative traits found that ten components explained 72.2% of the variation for qualitative traits, whereas nine components accounted for 69.96% of the variation in quantitative traits. The primary contributors to the variations are traits such as root (shape, flesh color, and yield), leaf (color, length, diameter, area) and fruit (length, diameter, and weight). Further, the accessions were grouped into two and three clusters based on qualitative and quantitative traits, respectively, indicating that quantitative characters better differentiated among the accessions. Similarly, the tanglegram showed little similarity between the qualitative and quantitative agro-morphological and physiological traits in clustering the accessions. These findings indicate the presence of sizable trait variation among the accessions that can be exploited as a selection marker to design and facilitate conservation and breeding strategies of anchote. To address the challenges of high complexity in modeling the correlation of multi-dimensional stochastic variables and the difficulty of solving long-term scheduling models in continuous action spaces in multi-energy complementary systems, this paper proposes a long-term optimization scheduling method based on Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG). First, an improved C-Vine Copula model is used to construct the multi-dimensional joint probability distribution of water, wind, and solar energy, and Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) is employed to generate a large number of water–wind–solar coupling scenarios, effectively reducing the model’s complexity. Then, a long-term optimization scheduling model is established with the goal of maximizing the absorption of clean energy, and it is converted into a Markov Decision Process (MDP). Next, the DDPG algorithm is employed with a noise dynamic adjustment mechanism to optimize the policy in continuous action spaces, yielding the optimal long-term scheduling strategy for the water–wind–solar multi-energy complementary system. Finally, using a water–wind–solar integrated energy base as a case study, comparative analysis demonstrates that the proposed method can improve the renewable energy absorption capacity and the system’s power generation efficiency by accurately quantifying the uncertainties of water, wind, and solar energy and precisely controlling the continuous action space during the scheduling process. Interrow management in vineyards significantly contributes to sustainable viticulture, particularly in water-scarce European regions. Grassy and herbaceous cover crops have been proven to enhance multiple regulating ecosystem services, including soil conservation, carbon sequestration, and improved water infiltration. However, the potential for water competition with vines necessitates region-specific approaches. This review aims to analyze the effects of different cover crop types and interrow tillage methods on water management and regulating ecosystem services, focusing on main European vineyard areas. The research involved a two-stage literature review by Google Scholar and Scopus, resulting in the identification of 67 relevant scientific publications, with 11 offering experimental data from European contexts. Selected studies were evaluated based on climate conditions, soil properties, slope characteristics, and interrow treatments. Findings highlight that the appropriate selection of cover crop species, sowing and mowing timing, and mulching practices can optimize vineyard resilience under climate stress. Practical recommendations are offered to help winegrowers adopt cost-effective and environmentally adaptive strategies, especially on sloped or shallow soils, where partial cover cropping is often the most beneficial for both yield and ecological balance. Cover crops and mulching reduce erosion, enhance vineyard soil moisture, relieve water stress consequences, and, as a result, these cover cropping techniques can improve yield and nutritional values of grapes (e.g., Brix, pH, K concentration), but effects vary; careful, site-specific, long-term management is essential for best results. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), once regarded solely as a highly toxic gas, is now recognized as a crucial signaling molecule in plants, bacteria, and mammals. In humans, H2S signaling plays a role in numerous physiological and pathological processes, including vasodilation, neuromodulation, and cytoprotection. To exploit its biological functions and therapeutic potential, a wide range of H2S-releasing compounds, known as H2S donors, have been developed. These donors are designed to release H2S under physiological conditions in a controlled manner. Among them, self-reporting H2S donors are seen as a particularly innovative class, combining therapeutic delivery with real-time fluorescence-based detection. This dual functionality enables spatiotemporal monitoring of H2S release in biological environments, eliminating the need for additional sensors or probes that could disrupt cellular homeostasis. This review summarizes recent advancements in self-reporting H2S donor systems, organizing them based on their activation triggers, such as specific bioanalytes, enzymes, or external stimuli like light. The discussion covers their design strategies, performance in biological applications, and therapeutic potential. Key challenges are also highlighted, including the need for precise control of H2S release kinetics, accurate signal quantification, and improved biocompatibility. With continued refinement, self-reporting H2S donors offer great promise for creating multifunctional platforms that seamlessly integrate diagnostic imaging with therapeutic H2S delivery. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the crop load on the berry and wine composition of Marselan grapes. Thus, the appropriate crop load for Marselan wine grapes in Ningxia was determined based on the shoot density and the number of clusters per shoot. Marselan grapes from the Gezi Mountain vineyard, located at the eastern foot of Helan Mountain in the Qingtongxia region of Ningxia, were selected as the research material to conduct a combination experiment with four levels of shoot density and three levels of cluster density. The analysis of the berry and wine chemical composition was combined with a wine sensory evaluation to determine the optimal crop load levels. Crop load regulation significantly affected both the grape berry composition and the basic physicochemical properties of the resulting wine. Low crop loads improved metrics such as the berry weight and soluble solids content. A low shoot density facilitated the accumulation of organic acids, flavonols, and hydroxybenzoic acids in wine. Moderate crop loads were conducive to anthocyanin synthesis—the total individual anthocyanins content in the 10–20 shoots per meter of the canopy treatment group ranged from 116% to 490% of the control group—whereas excessive crop loads hindered its accumulation. Crop load management significantly influenced the aroma composition of wine by regulating the content of sugars, nitrogen sources, and organic acids in grape berries, thereby promoting the synthesis of esters and the accumulation of key aromatic compounds, such as terpenes. This process optimized pleasant flavors, including fruity and floral aromas. In contrast, wines from the high crop load and control treatments contained lower levels of these aroma compounds. Compounds such as ethyl caprylate and β-damascenone were identified as potential quality markers. Overall, the wine produced from vines with a crop load of 30 clusters (15 shoots per meter of canopy, 2 clusters per shoot) received the highest sensory scores. Appropriate crop load management is therefore critical to improving the chemical composition of Marselan wine. Full article

Understanding the interplay between plant leaf functional traits and plant and soil factors under different soil thicknesses is significant for quantifying the interaction between plant growth and the environment. However, in the context of ecological restoration of vegetation in mining areas, there has been a lot of research on trees, shrubs, and grasses, but the characteristics and correlations of leaf functional traits of vines have not been fully studied to a large extent. Here, we report the differences in leaf functional traits of six vine plants (Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Pueraria lobata, Hedera nepalensis, Campsis grandiflora, Mucuna sempervirens, and Parthenocissus tricuspidata) with distinct growth forms in different soil cover thicknesses (20 cm, 40 cm, and 60 cm). In addition, soil factor indicators under different soil cover thicknesses were measured to elucidate the linkages between leaf functional traits of vine plants and soil factors. We found that P. lobata showed a resource acquisition strategy, while H. nepalensis demonstrated a resource conservation strategy. C. grandiflora and P. tricuspidata shifted toward more conservative resource allocation strategies as the soil cover thickness increased, whereas M. sempervirens showed the opposite trend. In the plant trait–trait relationships, there were synergistic associations between specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf nitrogen content (LNC); leaf moisture content (LMC) and leaf nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio (LN/P); and leaf specific dry weight (LSW), leaf succulence degree (LSD), and leaf dry matter content (LDMC). Trade-offs were observed between SLA and LSW, LSD, and LDMC; between leaf phosphorus content (LPC) and LN/P; and between LMC, LSW, and LDMC. In the plant trait–environment relationships, soil nutrients (pH, soil total phosphorus content (STP), and soil ammonium nitrogen content (SAN)) and soil enzyme activities (cellulase (CB), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), enzyme C/N activity ratio, and enzyme N/P activity ratio) were identified as the primary drivers of variation in leaf functional traits. Interestingly, nitrogen deficiency constrained the growth of vine plants in the mining area. Our study revealed that the responses of leaf functional traits of different vines under different soil thicknesses have significant species specificity, and each vine shows different resource acquisition and conservation strategies. Furthermore, soil cover thickness primarily influences plant functional traits by directly affecting soil enzyme activities and nutrients. However, the pathways through which soil thickness impacts these traits differ among various functional traits. Our findings provide a theoretical basis and practical reference for selecting vine plants and optimizing soil cover techniques for ecological restoration in mining areas. Full article

The simulation of wind power, electricity load, and natural gas prices will allow commodity traders to see the future movement of prices in a more probabilistic manner. The ability to observe possible paths for wind power, electricity load, and natural gas prices enables traders to obtain valuable insights for placing their trades on electricity prices. Since the above processes involve a seasonality factor, the seasonality component was modeled using a truncated Fourier series, and the random component was modeled using stochastic differential equations (SDE). It is evident from the literature that all the above processes are mean-reverting processes; thus, three mean-reverting Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU) processes were considered the model for wind power, the electricity load, and natural gas prices. Industry experts believe there is a correlation between wind power, the electricity load, and natural gas prices. For example, when wind power is higher and the electricity load is lower, natural gas prices are relatively low. The novelty of this study is the incorporation of the correlation structure between processes into the mean-reverting OU process using a copula function. Thus, the study utilized a vine copula and integrated it into the simulation. The study was conducted for the Texas energy market and used daily time scales for the simulations, and it was able to conclude that the proposed novel mean-reverting OU process outperforms the classical mean-reverting process in the case of wind power and the electricity load. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are substantial biocontrol agents reducing the populations of economically important pests in numerous crops. Recent findings indicate that their role in agroecosystems is more complex and extends to affecting plant physiology and growth. This study examined the effects of Beauveria bassiana and Isaria fumosorosea, as well as Salicylic acid (SA), on physiological parameters of grapevine (Vitis vinifera cv. Sauvignon Blanc). Additionally, the impact of SA on spore germination and pathogenicity of EPF against larvae of the European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana) was tested. Foliar application of EPF was found to increase the electron transport rate (ETR) from PSII to PSI, indicating higher photosynthetic activity compared to control plants. EPF also elevated the transpiration rate (E) and stomatal conductance (gs). In contrast, SA treatments decreased E and gs, while the high dose (10 mM) exhibited reduced Fv/Fm value, accompanied by phytotoxic spots on leaves. Spore germination of both fungi was significantly reduced only by the SA concentration of 2 mM, while 0.5 and 1 mM did not affect germination. Combination EPF and SA treatments presented the highest larval mortality of L. botrana (87.5% at 28 °C and 77.5% at 24 °C for B. bassiana and I. fumosorosea, respectively). However, SA reduced larval mycosis in most cases. Overall, the results suggest that EPF and SA can be co-applied and included in vineyard integrated strategies to support grapevine health. Agresto is the unfermented juice traditionally obtained from boiled unripe grapes, typically using fruit that would otherwise be discarded, and enriched with spices, herbs, and fruit. In this study, the phenolic profile, antioxidant and antibacterial activity, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of Agresto produced from two grape varieties (Sangiovese, and Vermentino) harvested in Mount Amiata (Tuscany) were evaluated. Agresto from Vermentino showed a higher total phenolic content (TPC), 1.31 mg GAE/mL, as well as a greater total flavonoid and flavonol content and FRAP activity compared to Agresto from Sangiovese. The highest ORAC value was observed in Agresto from Vermentino, 41.01 mg TE/mL, compared to that from Sangiovese. TPC, flavonols, apocarotenes, sulfur derivatives, and non-terpene derivatives were positively correlated with antimicrobial activity against E. coli, FRAP, and ORAC. Overall, our results showed that grape variety significantly influences the chemical composition of Agresto, particularly in terms of both VOCs and phenolic compounds. The observed variations in phenolic composition also affected the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of Agresto. These experimental findings clearly suggest the utmost importance of identifying the optimal chemical profile of “unripe grapes” used as raw material for Agresto production, considering both variety and the specific ripening degree achievable through vine green harvesting. Graft Compatibility of Local Grapevine Varieties with Grapevine Rootstocks in Yozgat Province

Grafting compatibility between rootstocks and scions is a critical factor influencing the success of vine propagation and the long-term productivity of vineyards. This study aimed to evaluate the compatibility, sapling quality characteristics, and survival rates of grafted vines produced by combining ten local grape cultivars from Yozgat Province with four rootstocks: ‘5 BB’, ‘41 B’, ‘1103 P’, and ‘Fercal’. Grafted vines were assessed based on callus formation, graft union success, root development, and overall sapling quality. The results revealed that the ‘Fercal’ rootstock exhibited superior compatibility with several cultivars, notably achieving 100% graft success with ‘Siyah Üzüm’ and a high sapling rate of 93.4% with ‘Gelinparmağı’. Strong performance was also observed in the ‘Fercal/Köledoyuran’ and ‘Fercal/Horoz Üzümü’ combinations, which produced sapling rates of 95.4%. While ‘5 BB’ performed well with ‘Parmak Üzümü’ (100% graft success), ‘Karagevrek’ (94.4%), and ‘Mor Bulut’, it showed poor results with ‘Gelinparmağı’ (66.5% sapling rate). The ‘1103 P’ rootstock demonstrated good compatibility with ‘Şahmuratlı’ (94.3% graft success) and ‘Kirpi Üzümü’. In contrast, although ‘41 B’ reached up to 100% graft success in some combinations, it exhibited variable sapling development potential, ranging from 46.2% to 80.0%. Among the cultivars, ‘Siyah Üzüm’ achieved 100% compatibility with three rootstocks (‘41 B’, ‘1103 P’, and ‘Fercal’), followed by ‘Köledoyuran’, which consistently showed high success rates ranging from 96.9% to 100%. These findings offer practical guidance for selecting optimal rootstock–scion combinations to improve the efficiency of grafted vine production and reduce losses, particularly for local grape cultivars. Evaluating the Potential of Improving In-Season Potato Nitrogen Status Diagnosis Using Leaf Fluorescence Sensor as Compared with SPAD Meter

The petiole nitrate–nitrogen concentration (PNNC) has been an industry standard indicator for in-season potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) nitrogen (N) status diagnosis. Leaf sensors can be used to predict the PNNC and other N status indicators non-destructively. The SPAD meter is a common leaf chlorophyll (Chl) meter, while the Dualex is a newer leaf fluorescence sensor. Limited research has been conducted to compare the two leaf sensors for potato N status assessment. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to (1) compare SPAD and Dualex for predicting potato N status indicators, and (2) evaluate the potential prediction improvement using multi-source data fusion. The plot-scale experiments were conducted in Becker, Minnesota, USA, in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023, involving different cultivars, N treatments, and irrigation rates. The results indicated that Dualex’s N balance index (NBI; Chl/Flav) always outperformed Dualex Chl but did not consistently perform better than the SPAD meter. All N status indicators were predicted with significantly higher accuracy with multi-source data fusion using machine learning models. A practical strategy was developed using a linear support vector regression model with SPAD, cultivar information, accumulated growing degree days, accumulated total moisture, and an as-applied N rate to predict the vine or whole-plant N nutrition index (NNI), achieving an R2 of 0.80–0.82, accuracy of 0.75–0.77, and Kappa statistic of 0.57–0.58 (near-substantial). Further research is needed to develop an easy-to-use application and corresponding in-season N recommendation strategy to facilitate practical on-farm applications. Full article
