This paper presents the design and implementation of a high-precision vehicle detection and classification system for toll stations on national highways in Colombia, leveraging LiDAR-based 3D point cloud processing and supervised machine learning. The system integrates a multi-sensor architecture, including a LiDAR scanner, high-resolution cameras, and Doppler radars, with an embedded computing platform for real-time processing and on-site inference. The methodology covers data preprocessing, feature extraction, descriptor encoding, and classification using Support Vector Machines. The system supports eight vehicular categories established by national regulations, which present significant challenges due to the need to differentiate categories by axle count, the presence of lifted axles, and vehicle usage. These distinctions affect toll fees and require a classification strategy beyond geometric profiling. The system achieves 89.9% overall classification accuracy, including 96.2% for light vehicles and 99.0% for vehicles with three or more axles. It also incorporates license plate recognition for complete vehicle traceability. The system was deployed at an operational toll station and has run continuously under real traffic and environmental conditions for over eighteen months. This framework represents a robust, scalable, and strategic technological component within Intelligent Transportation Systems and contributes to data-driven decision-making for road management and toll operations. Accurate and timely estimation of soybean emergence at the plot scale using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing imagery is essential for germplasm evaluation in breeding programs, where breeders prioritize overall plot-scale emergence rates over subimage-based counts. This study proposes PlotCounter, a deep learning regression model based on the TasselNetV2++ architecture, designed for plot-scale soybean seedling counting. It employs a patch-based training strategy combined with full-plot validation to achieve reliable performance with limited breeding plot data. To incorporate additional agronomic information, PlotCounter is extended into a multitask learning framework (MTL-PlotCounter) that integrates sowing metadata such as variety, number of seeds per hole, and sowing density as auxiliary classification tasks. RGB images of 54 breeding plots were captured in 2023 using a DJI Mavic 2 Pro UAV and processed into an orthomosaic for model development and evaluation, showing effective performance. PlotCounter achieves a root mean square error (RMSE) of 6.98 and a relative RMSE (rRMSE) of 6.93%. The variety-integrated MTL-PlotCounter, V-MTL-PlotCounter, performs the best, with relative reductions of 8.74% in RMSE and 3.03% in rRMSE compared to PlotCounter, and outperforms representative YOLO-based models. Additionally, both PlotCounter and V-MTL-PlotCounter are deployed on a web-based platform, enabling users to upload images via an interactive interface, automatically count seedlings, and analyze plot-scale emergence, powered by a multimodal large language model. This study highlights the potential of integrating UAV remote sensing, agronomic metadata, specialized deep learning models, and multimodal large language models for advanced crop monitoring. Transportation is often cited as a significant barrier to healthcare access by Veterans, particularly those from minority groups, who have disabilities, or live in rural areas. Autonomous shuttles (AS) offer a potential solution, yet limited research has explored Veterans’ experiences with this technology. This study qualitatively investigated Veterans’ lived experiences with AS through focus groups, enrolling participants aged 18+ from Gainesville, The Villages, and Lake Nona, Florida. Via a directed content analysis, six key themes were identified: Perceived Benefits, Safety, Experience with Autonomous Vehicles (AV), AS Experience, AV Adoption, and Perception Change. Among 26 participants (aged 30–85; 77% men; 88% urban residents), prominent themes included Safety (n = 161), Perceived Benefits (n = 153), and AS Experience (n = 118), with predominantly positive counts in all themes except AS Experience. Participants acknowledged safety advantages and multitasking potential of AS over human-operated vehicles while recommending improvements to the shuttle’s slow speed, availability and convenience. While the AS ride was positively received overall, some participants noted issues with comfort and braking, emphasizing the need for further technological enhancements. Real-world exposure to AS appeared to influence acceptance positively, offering insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders aiming to optimize AS deployment for mobility-vulnerable Veterans. The Palisades Fire of Los Angeles: Lessons to Be Learned

In 1961, Los Angeles experienced the disastrous Bel Air fire, which swept through an affluent neighborhood situated in a hilly, WUI (wildland–urban interface) location. In January 2025, the city was devastated again by a nearly-simultaneous series of wildfires, the most severe of which took place close to the 1961 fire location. Disastrous WUI fires are, unfortunately, an anticipatable occurrence in many U.S. cities. A number of issues identified earlier remained the same. Some were largely solved, while other new ones have emerged. The paper examines the Palisades Fire of January, 2025 in this context. In the intervening decades, the population of the city grew substantially. But firefighting resources did not keep pace. Very likely, the single-most-important factor in causing the 2025 disasters is that the Los Angeles Fire Department operational vehicle count shrank to 1/5 of what it was in 1961 (per capita). This is likely why critical delays were experienced in the initial attack on the Palisades Fire, leading to a runaway conflagration. Two other crucial issues were the management of vegetation and the adequacy of water supplies. On both these issues, the Palisades Fire revealed serious problems. A problem which arose after 1961 involves the unintended consequences of environmental legislation. Communities will continue to be devastated by wildfires unless adequate vegetation management is accomplished. Yet, environmental regulations are focused on maintaining the status quo, often making vegetation management difficult or ineffective. House survival during a wildfire is strongly affected by whether good vegetation management practices and good building practices (“ignition-resistant” construction features) have been implemented. The latter have not been mandatory for housing built prior to 2008, and the vast majority of houses in the area predated such building code requirements. California has also suffered from a highly counterproductive stance on insurance regulation. This has resulted in some residents not having property insurance, due to the inhospitable operating conditions for insurance firms in the state. Because of the historical precedent, the details in this paper focus on the Palisades Fire; however, many of the lessons learned apply to managing fires in all WUI areas. Policy recommendations are offered, which could help to reduce the potential for future conflagrations. Full article

Inter-turn short-circuit (ITSC) faults in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) present a significant reliability challenge in electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains, particularly under non-stationary operating conditions characterized by inverter-driven transients, variable loads, and magnetic saturation. Existing diagnostic approaches, including motor current signature analysis (MCSA) and wavelet-based methods, are primarily designed for steady-state conditions and rely on manual feature selection, limiting their applicability in real-time embedded systems. Furthermore, the lack of publicly available, high-fidelity datasets capturing the transient dynamics and nonlinear flux-linkage behaviors of PMSMs under fault conditions poses an additional barrier to developing data-driven diagnostic solutions. To address these challenges, this study introduces a simulation framework that generates a comprehensive dataset using finite element method (FEM) models, incorporating magnetic saturation effects and inverter-driven transients across diverse EV operating scenarios. Time-frequency features extracted via Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) from stator current signals are used to train a Transformer model for automated ITSC fault detection. The Transformer model, leveraging self-attention mechanisms, captures both local transient patterns and long-range dependencies within the time-frequency feature space. This architecture operates without sequential processing, in contrast to recurrent models such as LSTM or RNN models, enabling efficient inference with a relatively low parameter count, which is advantageous for embedded applications. The proposed model achieves 97% validation accuracy on simulated data, demonstrating its potential for real-time PMSM fault detection. Additionally, the provided dataset and methodology contribute to the facilitation of reproducible research in ITSC diagnostics under realistic EV operating conditions. Full article

The accurate monitoring of waterbird abundance and their habitat preferences is essential for effective ecological management and conservation planning in aquatic ecosystems. This study explores the efficacy of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based high-resolution orthomosaics for waterbird monitoring and mapping along the Lieve Canal, Belgium. We systematically classified habitats into residential, industrial, riparian tree, and herbaceous vegetation zones, examining their influence on the spatial distribution of three focal waterbird species: Eurasian coot (Fulica atra), common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), and wild duck (Anas platyrhynchos). Herbaceous vegetation zones consistently supported the highest waterbird densities, attributed to abundant nesting substrates and minimal human disturbance. UAV-based waterbird counts correlated strongly with ground-based surveys (R2 = 0.668), though species-specific detectability varied significantly due to morphological visibility and ecological behaviors. Detection accuracy was highest for coots, intermediate for ducks, and lowest for moorhens, highlighting the crucial role of image resolution ground sampling distance (GSD) in aerial monitoring. Operational challenges, including image occlusion and habitat complexity, underline the need for tailored survey protocols and advanced sensing techniques. Our findings demonstrate that UAV imagery provides a reliable and scalable method for monitoring waterbird habitats, offering critical insights for biodiversity conservation and sustainable management practices in aquatic landscapes. This study presents a hybrid method for state-of-charge (SOC) estimation of lithium-ion batteries using LSTM neural networks optimized with genetic algorithms (GA), combined with Coulomb Counting (CC) as an initial estimator. Experimental tests were conducted using medium-voltage (48–72 V) lithium-ion battery packs under standardized driving cycles (NEDC and WLTP). The proposed method enhances prediction accuracy under dynamic conditions by recalibrating the LSTM output with CC estimates through a dynamic fusion parameter α. The novelty of this approach lies in the integration of machine learning and physical modeling, optimized via evolutionary algorithms, to address limitations of standalone methods in real-time applications. The hybrid model achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.181%, outperforming conventional estimation strategies. These findings contribute to more reliable battery management systems (BMS) for electric vehicles and second-life applications. Full article

The acquisition of plant phenotypic traits is essential for selecting superior varieties, improving crop yield, and supporting precision agriculture and agricultural decision-making. Therefore, it plays a significant role in modern agriculture and plant science research. Traditional manual measurements of phenotypic traits are labor-intensive and inefficient. In contrast, combining 3D reconstruction technologies with autonomous vehicles enables more intuitive and efficient trait acquisition. This study proposes a 3D semantic reconstruction system based on an improved ORB-SLAM3 framework, which is mounted on an unmanned vehicle to acquire phenotypic traits in tomato cultivation scenarios. The vehicle is also equipped with the A * algorithm for autonomous navigation. To enhance the semantic representation of the point cloud map, we integrate the BiSeNetV2 network into the ORB-SLAM3 system as a semantic segmentation module. Furthermore, a two-stage filtering strategy is employed to remove outliers and improve the map accuracy, and OctoMap is adopted to store the point cloud data, significantly reducing the memory consumption. A spherical fitting method is applied to estimate the number of tomato fruits. The experimental results demonstrate that BiSeNetV2 achieves a mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 95.37% and a frame rate of 61.98 FPS on the tomato dataset, enabling real-time segmentation. The use of OctoMap reduces the memory consumption by an average of 96.70%. The relative errors when predicting the plant height, canopy width, and volume are 3.86%, 14.34%, and 27.14%, respectively, while the errors concerning the fruit count and fruit volume are 14.36% and 14.25%. Localization experiments on a field dataset show that the proposed system achieves a mean absolute trajectory error (mATE) of 0.16 m and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.21 m, indicating high localization accuracy. Therefore, the proposed system can accurately acquire the phenotypic traits of tomato plants, providing data support for precision agriculture and agricultural decision-making. Full article

Winter wheat yield prediction is critical for optimizing field management plans and guiding agricultural production. To address the limitations of conventional manual yield estimation methods, including low efficiency and poor interpretability, this study innovatively proposes an intelligent yield estimation method based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). A comprehensive two-factor (fertilization × irrigation) controlled field experiment was designed to thoroughly validate the applicability and effectiveness of this method. The experimental design comprised two irrigation treatments, sufficient irrigation (C) at 750 m3 ha−1 and deficit irrigation (M) at 450 m3 ha−1, along with five fertilization treatments (at a rate of 180 kg N ha−1): (1) organic fertilizer alone, (2) organic–inorganic fertilizer blend at a 7:3 ratio, (3) organic–inorganic fertilizer blend at a 3:7 ratio, (4) inorganic fertilizer alone, and (5) no fertilizer control. The experimental protocol employed a DJI M300 RTK unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a multispectral sensor to systematically acquire high-resolution growth imagery of winter wheat across critical phenological stages, from heading to maturity. The acquired multispectral imagery was meticulously annotated using the Labelme professional annotation tool to construct a comprehensive experimental dataset comprising over 2000 labeled images. These annotated data were subsequently employed to train an enhanced CNN model based on ResNet50 architecture, which achieved automated generation of panicle density maps and precise panicle counting, thereby realizing yield prediction. Field experimental results demonstrated significant yield variations among fertilization treatments under sufficient irrigation, with the 3:7 organic–inorganic blend achieving the highest actual yield (9363.38 ± 468.17 kg ha−1) significantly outperforming other treatments (p < 0.05), confirming the synergistic effects of optimized nitrogen and water management. The enhanced CNN model exhibited superior performance, with an average accuracy of 89.0–92.1%, representing a 3.0% improvement over YOLOv8. Notably, model accuracy showed significant correlation with yield levels (p < 0.05), suggesting more distinct panicle morphological features in high-yield plots that facilitated model identification. The CNN’s yield predictions demonstrated strong agreement with the measured values, maintaining mean relative errors below 10%. Particularly outstanding performance was observed for the organic fertilizer with full irrigation (5.5% error) and the 7:3 organic-inorganic blend with sufficient irrigation (8.0% error), indicating that the CNN network is more suitable for these management regimes. These findings provide a robust technical foundation for precision farming applications in winter wheat production. Future research will focus on integrating this technology into smart agricultural management systems to enable real-time, data-driven decision making at the farm scale. Full article

Estrogen-related receptor γ (ERRγ) has been reported to regulate various inflammation-related diseases. Herein, we attempted to evaluate the effects of DN200434 as a modulator for ERRγ in mice with atopic dermatitis (AD). Levels of mRNA and protein expression for ERRγ were evaluated in normal and DNCB-induced AD-diagnosed skin. The effects of DN200434 on the chemokines, inflammatory cytokines, and AKT/MAPK/NFκB pathway signaling were investigated in TNF-α/IFN-γ-treated HaCaT cells. DNCB-induced AD mice received DN200434 intraperitoneally for 10 days. Epidermal thickness at the dorsal aspect of the inflamed skin, spleen index, serum IgE levels, and proinflammatory cytokine levels in the skin lesions were measured. Histopathological evaluations, including assessments of epidermal hyperplasia, dermal inflammation, hyperkeratosis, folliculitis, and mast cell counts, were performed to confirm diagnostic features. Significant elevations in ERRγ expression at the RNA and protein levels were observed in DNCB-induced AD lesions. DN200434 suppressed chemokine and inflammatory cytokine expression and inhibited the elevated phosphorylation levels of AKT, ERK, p38, and NFκB in TNF-α/IFN-γ-treated HaCaT cells. Treatment with DN200434 alleviated DNCB-induced AD symptoms. The histopathological score and levels of infiltrated mast cells were also markedly lower in DN200434-treated AD mice than in vehicle-treated AD mice. Consistently, DN200434 reduced the serum IgE level and mRNA expression of TNFα and IL-6 in AD-diagnosed lesions. Collectively, our findings indicated the feasibility of ERRγ as a therapeutic target for the regulation of AD and that DN200434 can be a useful therapeutic agent in treating AD. Full article

Accurate State of Charge (SOC) estimation is critical for optimizing the performance and longevity of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which are widely used in applications ranging from electric vehicles to renewable energy storage. Traditional SOC estimation methods, such as Coulomb counting and open-circuit voltage measurement, suffer from cumulative errors and slow response times. This paper proposes a novel machine learning-based approach for SOC estimation by integrating Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) with the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method, Atom Search Optimization (ASO), and Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM). This study focuses on large-capacity lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries (3.2 V, 104 Ah), addressing a gap in existing research. EIS data collected at various SOC levels and temperatures were processed using SHAP for feature extraction (FE), and the ASO–LightGBM model was employed for SOC prediction. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed SHAP–ASO–LightGBM method significantly improves estimation accuracy, achieving an RMSE of 3.3%, MAE of 1.86%, and R2 of 0.99, outperforming traditional methods like LSTM and DNN. The findings highlight the potential of EIS and machine learning (ML) for robust SOC estimation in large-capacity LIBs. Full article

This paper investigates the energy efficiency and positional stability of two types of ultralight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)—bicopter and quadcopter—both with mass below 250 g, under varying flight conditions. The study is motivated by increasing interest in low-weight drones due to their regulatory flexibility and application potential in constrained environments. A comparative methodology was adopted, involving the construction of both UAV types using identical components where possible, including motors, sensors, and power supply, differing only in propulsion configuration. Experimental tests were conducted in wind-free and wind-induced environments to assess power consumption and stability. The data were collected through onboard blackbox logging, and positional deviation was tracked via video analysis. Results show that while the quadcopter consistently demonstrated lower energy consumption (by 6–22%) and higher positional stability, the bicopter offered advantages in simplicity of frame design and reduced component count. However, the bicopter required extensive manual tuning of PID parameters due to the inherent instability introduced by servo-based control. The findings highlight the potential of bicopters in constrained applications, though they emphasize the need for precise control strategies and high-performance servos. The study fills a gap in empirical analysis of energy consumption in lightweight bicopter UAVs. Full article

UAV-Based Automatic Detection of Missing Rice Seedlings Using the PCERT-DETR Model

Due to the limitations of the sowing machine performance and rice seed germination rates, missing seedlings inevitably occur after rice is sown in large fields. This phenomenon has a direct impact on the rice yield. In the field environment, the existing methods for detecting missing seedlings based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing images often have unsatisfactory effects. Therefore, to enable the fast and accurate detection of missing rice seedlings and facilitate subsequent reseeding, this study proposes a UAV remote-sensing-based method for detecting missing rice seedlings in large fields. The proposed method uses an improved PCERT-DETR model to detect rice seedlings and missing seedlings in UAV remote sensing images of large fields. The experimental results show that PCERT-DETR achieves an optimal performance on the self-constructed dataset, with an mean average precision (mAP) of 81.2%, precision (P) of 82.8%, recall (R) of 78.3%, and F1-score (F1) of 80.5%. The model’s parameter count is only 21.4 M and its FLOPs reach 66.6 G, meeting real-time detection requirements. Compared to the baseline network models, PCERT-DETR improves the P, R, F1, and mAP by 15.0, 1.2, 8.5, and 6.8 percentage points, respectively. Furthermore, the performance evaluation experiments were carried out through ablation experiments, comparative detection model experiments and heat map visualization analysis, indicating that the model has a strong detection performance on the test set. The results confirm that the proposed model can accurately detect the number of missing rice seedlings. This study provides accurate information on the number of missing seedlings for subsequent reseeding operations, thus contributing to the improvement of precision farming practices. Full article

Traffic congestion has increased significantly in today’s rapidly urbanizing world, influencing people’s daily lives. Traffic signal control systems (TSCSs) play an important role in alleviating congestion by optimizing traffic light timings and improving road efficiency. Yet traditional TSCSs neglected pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-monitored road users, degrading traffic signal optimization (TSO). Therefore, this framework proposes a multi-object-based traffic flow analysis and intensity estimation model for efficient TSO using Upper Confidence Bound Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning Cubic Spline Fuzzy Logic (UCB-MRL-CSFL). Initially, the real-time traffic videos undergo frame conversion and redundant frame removal, followed by preprocessing. Then, the lanes are detected; further, the objects are detected using Temporal Context You Only Look Once (TC-YOLO). Now, the object counting in each lane is carried out using the Cumulative Vehicle Motion Kalman Filter (CVMKF), followed by queue detection using Vehicle Density Mapping (VDM). Next, the traffic flow is analyzed by Feature Variant Optical Flow (FVOF), followed by traffic intensity estimation. Now, based on the siren flashlight colors, emergency vehicles are separated. Lastly, UCB-MRL-CSFL optimizes the Traffic Signals (TSs) based on the separated emergency vehicle, pedestrian information, and traffic intensity. Therefore, the proposed framework outperforms the other conventional methodologies for TSO by considering pedestrians, cyclists, and so on, with higher computational efficiency (94.45%). Full article

Within the field of remote sensing, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) infrared object detection plays a pivotal role, especially in complex environments. However, existing methods face challenges such as insufficient accuracy or low computational efficiency, particularly in the detection of small objects. This paper proposes a lightweight and accurate UAV infrared object detection model, YOLO-UIR, for small object detection from a UAV perspective. The model is based on the YOLO architecture and mainly includes the Efficient C2f module, lightweight spatial perception (LSP) module, and bidirectional feature interaction fusion (BFIF) module. The Efficient C2f module significantly enhances feature extraction capabilities by combining local and global features through an Adaptive Dual-Stream Attention Mechanism. Compared with the existing C2f module, the introduction of Partial Convolution reduces the model’s parameter count while maintaining high detection accuracy. The BFIF module further enhances feature fusion effects through cross-level semantic interaction, thereby improving the model’s ability to fuse contextual features. Moreover, the LSP module efficiently combines features from different distances using Large Receptive Field Convolution Layers, significantly enhancing the model’s long-range information capture capability. Additionally, the use of Reparameterized Convolution and Depthwise Separable Convolution ensures the model’s lightweight nature, making it highly suitable for real-time applications. On the DroneVehicle and HIT-UAV datasets, YOLO-UIR achieves superior detection performance compared to existing methods, with an mAP of 71.1% and 90.7%, respectively. The model also demonstrates significant advantages in terms of computational efficiency and parameter count. Ablation experiments verify the effectiveness of each optimization module. Full article
