Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) play a critical role in ocean exploration. However, due to the inherent limitations of most sensors in underwater environments, achieving accurate navigation and localization in complex underwater scenarios remains a significant challenge. While vision-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) provides a cost-effective alternative for AUV navigation, existing methods are primarily designed for terrestrial applications and struggle to address underwater-specific issues, such as poor illumination, dynamic interference, and sparse features. To tackle these challenges, we propose RAEM-SLAM, a robust adaptive end-to-end monocular SLAM framework for AUVs in underwater environments. Specifically, we propose a Physics-guided Underwater Adaptive Augmentation (PUAA) method that dynamically converts terrestrial scene datasets into physically realistic pseudo-underwater images for the augmentation training of RAEM-SLAM, improving the system’s generalization and adaptability in complex underwater scenes. We also introduce a Residual Semantic–Spatial Attention Module (RSSA), which utilizes a dual-branch attention mechanism to effectively fuse semantic and spatial information. This design enables adaptive enhancement of key feature regions and suppression of noise interference, resulting in more discriminative feature representations. Furthermore, we incorporate a Local–Global Perception Block (LGP), which integrates multi-scale local details with global contextual dependencies to significantly improve AUV pose estimation accuracy in dynamic underwater scenes. Experimental results on real-world underwater datasets demonstrate that RAEM-SLAM outperforms state-of-the-art SLAM approaches in enabling precise and robust navigation for AUVs. Full article

To address the demand of equivalent self-noise suppression in a distributed hydroacoustic sensing system, this study proposes a method to enhance the acoustic sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) using space division multiplexed (SDM) technology based on multi-core fiber (MCF). Specifically, a dual-channel demodulation system for distributed acoustic sensing is designed using MCF. The responses of different cores in MCF are almost consistent under external acoustic pressure, while their self-noise is inconsistent. Accordingly, the acoustic pressure phase sensitivity (APPS) and SNR gain based on the accumulation of dual-channel signals are analyzed, which are verified by experiments. It is shown that the self-noise correlation coefficient between the two cores is 0.11, increasing the noise power by 3.46 dB. The APPS is increased by 5.97 dB re 1 rad/μPa after the accumulation of two-core signals, which is close to the theoretical value (6 dB). The equivalent self-noise is reduced by 2.54 dB. The experimental results reveal that the enhancement of acoustic pressure phase shift sensitivity and SNR can be achieved by the space division multiplexing (SDM) of multi-core signals, which is of great significance for suppressing the equivalent self-noise of the system and realizing the acoustic pressure detection of weak underwater signals. Anthropogenic noise pollution is a significant global environmental issue that adversely affects the behavior, physiology, and auditory functions of aquatic species. However, studies on the effects of underwater noise on early developmental stages of fish remain scarce, particularly regarding the differential impacts of daytime versus nighttime noise exposure. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos were exposed to control group (no additional noise), daytime noise (100–1000 Hz, 130 dB, from 08:00 to 20:00) or nighttime noise (100–1000 Hz, 130 dB, from 20:00 to 08:00) for 5 days, and their embryonic development and oxidative stress levels were analyzed. Compared to the control group, the results indicated that exposure to both daytime and nighttime noise led to delays in embryo hatching time and a significant decrease in larval heart rate. Notably, exposure to nighttime noise significantly increased the larval deformity rate. Noise exposure, particularly at night, elevated the activities of catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX), as well as the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA), accompanied by upregulation of antioxidant-related gene expression levels. Nighttime noise exposure significantly increased the abnormality rate of otolith development in larvae and markedly downregulated the expression levels of otop1 related to otolith development regulation, while daytime noise exposure only induced a slight increase in the otolith abnormality rate. After noise exposure, the number of lateral neuromasts in larvae decreased slightly, yet genes (slc17a8 and capgb) related to hair cell development were significantly upregulated. Overall, this study demonstrates that both daytime and nighttime noise can induce oxidative stress and impair embryonic development of zebrafish, with nighttime noise causing more severe damage. The rapid advancement of underwater wireless communication technologies is critical to unlocking the full potential of marine resource exploration and environmental monitoring. This paper reviews recent progress in three primary modalities: underwater acoustic communication, radio frequency (RF) communication, and underwater optical wireless communication (UWOC), each designed to address specific challenges posed by complex underwater environments. Acoustic communication, while effective for long-range transmission, is constrained by ambient noise and high latency; recent innovations in noise reduction and data rate enhancement have notably improved its reliability. RF communication offers high-speed, short-range capabilities in shallow waters, but still faces challenges in hardware miniaturization and accurate channel modeling. UWOC has emerged as a promising solution, enabling multi-gigabit data rates over medium distances through advanced modulation techniques and turbulence mitigation. Additionally, bio-inspired approaches such as electric field communication provide energy-efficient and robust alternatives under turbid conditions. This paper further examines the practical integration of these technologies in underwater platforms, including autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), highlighting trade-offs between energy efficiency, system complexity, and communication performance. By synthesizing recent advancements, this review outlines the advantages and limitations of current underwater communication methods and their real-world applications, offering insights to guide the future development of underwater communication systems for robotic and vehicular platforms. In this paper, a joint Matching Field Processing (MFP) Algorithm based on horizontal uniform circular array (UCA) is proposed for three-dimensional position of underwater wrecked targets. Firstly, a Marine search and rescue position model based on Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) and matching field quadratic joint Algorithm was proposed. Secondly, an MVDR beamforming method based on pre-Kalman filtering is designed to refine the real-time DOA estimation of the desired signal and the interference source, and the sound source azimuth is determined for prepositioning. The antenna array weights are dynamically adjusted according to the filtered DOA information. Finally, the Adaptive Matching Field Algorithm (AMFP) used the DOA information to calculate the range and depth of the lost target, and obtained the range and depth estimates. Thus, the 3D position of the lost underwater target is jointly estimated. This method alleviates the angle ambiguity problem and does not require a computationally intensive 2D spectral search. The simulation results show that the proposed method can better realise underwater three-dimensional positioning under certain signal-to-noise ratio conditions. When there is no error in the sensor coordinates, the positioning error is smaller than that of the baseline method as the SNR increases. When the SNR is 0 dB, with the increase in the sensor coordinate error, the target location error increases but is smaller than the error amplitude of the benchmark Algorithm. The experimental results verify the robustness of the proposed framework in the hierarchical ocean environment, which provides a practical basis for the deployment of rapid response underwater positioning systems in maritime search and rescue scenarios. The Kuroshio Current’s flow velocity imposes exacting requirements on underwater vehicle propulsive systems. Ecological preservation necessitates low-noise propeller designs to mitigate operational disturbances. As technological evolution advances toward greater intelligence and system integration, intelligent unmanned systems are positioning themselves as a critical frontier in marine innovation. In recent years, the global research community has increased its efforts towards the development of high-maneuverability underwater vehicles. However, propeller design optimization ignores the key balance between acoustic performance and hydrodynamic efficiency, as well as the appropriate speed threshold for blade rotation. In order to solve this problem, the propeller design of the NACA 65A010 airfoil is optimized by using OpenProp v3.3.4 and XFlow 2022 software, aiming at innovating the propulsion system of shallow water agile submersibles. The study presents an integrated design framework combining lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations synergized with fully Lagrangian-LES modeling, implementing rotational speed thresholds to detect cavitation inception, followed by advanced acoustic propagation analysis. Through rigorous comparative assessment of hydrodynamic metrics, we establish an optimization protocol for propeller selection tailored to littoral zone operational demands. Studies have shown that increasing the number of propeller blades can reduce the single-blade load and delay cavitation, but too many blades will aggravate the complexity of the flow field, resulting in reduced efficiency and noise rebound. It is concluded that the propeller with five blades, a diameter of 234 mm, and a speed of 500 RPM exhibits the best performance. Under these conditions, the water efficiency is 69.01%, and the noise is the lowest, which basically realizes the balance between hydrodynamic efficiency and acoustic performance. This paradigm-shifting research carries substantial implications for next-generation marine vehicles, particularly in optimizing operational stealth and energy efficiency through intelligent propulsion architecture. Accurate evaluation of fish feeding intensity is crucial for optimizing aquaculture efficiency and the healthy growth of fish. Previous methods mainly rely on single-modal approaches (e.g., audio or visual). However, the complex underwater environment makes single-modal monitoring methods face significant challenges: visual systems are severely affected by water turbidity, lighting conditions, and fish occlusion, while acoustic systems suffer from background noise. Although existing studies have attempted to combine acoustic and visual information, most adopt simple feature-level fusion strategies, which fail to fully explore the complementary advantages of the two modalities under different environmental conditions and lack dynamic evaluation mechanisms for modal reliability. To address these problems, we propose the Adaptive Cross-modal Attention Fusion Network (ACAF-Net), a cross-modal complementarity learning framework with a two-stage attention fusion mechanism: (1) a cross-modal enhancement stage that enriches individual representations through Low-rank Bilinear Pooling and learnable fusion weights; (2) an adaptive attention fusion stage that dynamically weights acoustic and visual features based on complementarity and environmental reliability. Our framework incorporates dimension alignment strategies and attention mechanisms to capture temporal–spatial complementarity between acoustic feeding signals and visual behavioral patterns. Extensive experiments demonstrate superior performance compared to single-modal and conventional fusion approaches, with 6.4% accuracy improvement. The results validate the effectiveness of exploiting cross-modal complementarity for underwater behavioral analysis and establish a foundation for intelligent aquaculture monitoring systems. Interferometric fiber optic hydrophones (IFOHs) are highly sensitive for underwater acoustic detection but face challenges owing to the trade-off between laser monochromaticity and coherence length. In this study, we propose a pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) phase modulation method for laser coherence length control, establishing the first theoretical model that quantitatively links PRBS parameter to coherence length, elucidating the mechanism underlying its suppression of parasitic interference noise. Furthermore, our research findings demonstrate that while reducing the laser coherence length effectively mitigates parasitic interference noise in IFOHs, this reduction also leads to elevated background noise caused by diminished interference visibility. Consequently, the modulation of coherence length requires a balanced optimization approach that not only suppresses parasitic noise but also minimizes visibility-introduced background noise, thereby determining the system-specific optimal coherence length. Through theoretical modeling and experimental validation, we determined that for IFOH systems with a 500 ns delay, the optimal coherence lengths for link fibers of 3.3 km and 10 km are 0.93 m and 0.78 m, respectively. At the optimal coherence length, the background noise level in the 3.3 km system reaches −84.5 dB (re: rad/√Hz @1 kHz), representing an additional noise suppression of 4.5 dB beyond the original suppression. This study provides a comprehensive theoretical and experimental solution to the long-standing contradiction between high laser monochromaticity, stability and appropriate coherence length, establishing a coherence modulation noise suppression framework for hydrophones, gyroscopes, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), and other fields. This paper presents a behavior tree-based control architecture for end-to-end mission planning of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) collaborating with a moving mothership in dynamic marine environments. The framework is organized into three phases—prepare and launch, execute the mission, and retrieval and docking—each encapsulated in an independent sub-tree to enable modular error handling and seamless phase transitions. The AUV and mothership operate entirely underwater, with real-time docking to a moving platform. An extended Kalman filter (EKF) fuses data from inertial, pressure, and acoustic sensors for accurate navigation and state estimation. At the same time, obstacle avoidance leverages forward-looking sonar (FLS)-based potential field methods to react to unpredictable underwater hazards. The system is implemented on the robot operating system (ROS) and validated in the Stonefish physics engine simulator. Simulation results demonstrate reliable mission execution, successful dynamic docking under communication delays and sensor noise, and robust retrieval from injected faults, confirming the validity and stability of the proposed architecture. Underwater navigation remains constrained by technological limitations, driving the exploration of alternative approaches such as polarized light-based systems. This review systematically examines advances in polarized navigation from three perspectives. First, the principles of atmospheric polarization navigation are analyzed, with their operational mechanisms, advantages, and inherent constraints dissected. Second, innovations in bionic polarization multi-sensor fusion positioning are consolidated, highlighting progress beyond conventional heading-direction extraction. Third, emerging underwater polarization navigation techniques are critically evaluated, revealing that current methods predominantly adapt atmospheric frameworks enhanced by advanced filtering to mitigate underwater interference. A comprehensive synthesis of underwater polarization modeling methodologies is provided, categorizing physical, data-driven, and hybrid approaches. Through rigorous analysis of studies, three persistent barriers are identified: (1) inadequate polarization pattern modeling under dynamic cross-media conditions; (2) insufficient robustness against turbidity-induced noise; (3) immature integration of polarization vision with sonar/IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensing. Targeted research directions are proposed, including adaptive deep learning models, multi-spectral polarization sensing, and bio-inspired sensor fusion architectures. These insights establish a roadmap for developing reliable underwater navigation systems that transcend current technological boundaries. Full article

Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) have excellent perception of water disturbances and can still sense targets as far as 180 m away, even when they lose their vision and hearing. This exceptional capability is attributed to the undulating structure of its vibrissae. These specialized whiskers not only effectively suppress vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) during locomotion but also amplify the vortex street signals generated by the wake of a target, thereby enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In recent years, researchers in fluid mechanics, bionics, and sensory biology have focused on analyzing the hydrodynamic characteristics of seal vibrissae. Based on bionic principles, various underwater biomimetic seal whisker sensors have been developed that mimic this unique geometry. This review comprehensively discusses research on the hydrodynamic properties of seal whiskers, the construction of three-dimensional geometric models, the theoretical foundations of fluid–structure interactions, the advantages and engineering applications of seal whisker structures in suppressing VIVs, and the design of sensors inspired by bionic principles. Underwater towed systems (UTSs) are widely used in underwater exploration and oceanographic data acquisition. However, the heave motion information of the towing ship is usually affected by the measurement transmitting delay, sensor noise and surface waves, which will result in uncontrolled depth variation of the towed vehicle, so as to adversely affect the monitoring performance and mechanical robustness of the UTS. To resolve this problem, a heave motion prediction approach based on sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) incorporated with empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for the UTS is proposed in this paper. With the proposed approach, a heave motion model of the towing ship with random waves is firstly developed based on strip theory. Meanwhile, the EMD is employed to eliminate the high-frequency noise of the measurement data to restore low-frequency towing ship motion. And then, the SBL is utilized to train the weight parameters in the built model to predict the heave motion, which not only reconstruct the heave motion from non-stationary sensor signals with noise but also prevent overfitting. Furthermore, the depth compensation of the towed vehicle is then performed using the predicted heave motion. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that the proposed EMD-SBL method significantly improves both the prediction accuracy and model adaptability under various sea conditions, and it also guarantees that the maximum prediction depth error of the heave motion does not exceed 1 cm. The rapid expansion of deep-sea sensing networks underscores the critical need for accurate underwater positioning of observation base stations. However, achieving precise acoustic localization, particularly at depths exceeding 4 km, remains a significant challenge due to systematic ranging errors, clock drift, and inaccuracies in sound speed modeling. This study proposes and validates a three-tier calibration framework consisting of a Dynamic Single-Difference (DSD) solver, a geometrically optimized reference buoy selection algorithm, and a Virtual Beacon (VB) depth inversion method based on sound speed profiles. Through simulations under varying noise conditions, the DSD method effectively mitigates common ranging and clock errors. The geometric reference optimization algorithm enhances the selection of optimal buoy layouts and reference points. At a depth of 4 km, the VB method improves vertical positioning accuracy by 15% compared to the DSD method alone, and nearly doubles vertical accuracy compared to traditional non-differential approaches. This research demonstrates that deep-sea underwater target calibration can be achieved without high-precision time synchronization and in the presence of fixed ranging errors. The proposed framework has the potential to lower technological barriers for large-scale deep-sea network deployments and provides a robust foundation for autonomous deep-sea exploration. The classification of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) from magnetometer data is a critical but challenging task, frequently hindered by the data scarcity required for training robust machine learning models. To address this, we leverage a high-fidelity digital twin to generate a comprehensive dataset of magnetometer signals from both UXO and non-UXO objects, incorporating complex remanent magnetization effects. In this study, we design and evaluate a custom Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for UXO classification and compare it against classical machine learning baseline, including Random Forest and kNN. Our CNN model achieves a balanced accuracy of 84.65%, significantly outperforming traditional models that exhibit performance collapse under slight distortions such as additive noise, drift, and time-wrapping. Additionally, we present a compact two-block CNN variant that retains competitive accuracy while reducing the number of learnable parameters by approximately 33%, making it suitable for real-time onboard classification in underwater vehicle missions. Through extensive ablation studies, we confirm that architectural components, such as residual skip connections and element-wise batch normalization, are crucial for achieving model stability and performance. The results also highlight the practical implications of underwater vehicles for survey design, emphasizing the need to mitigate signal drift and maintain constant survey speeds. This work not only provides a robust deep learning model for UXO classification, but also offers actionable suggestions for improving both model deployment and data acquisition protocols in the field. As an innovative underwater propulsion technology, the rim-driven thruster (RDT) has garnered increasing attention due to its advantages over conventional diesel or gas turbine propulsion systems, including reduced noise, higher efficiency, and a compact structure. However, traditional hull–engine–propeller matching theories are not directly applicable to RDTs because of their unique shaftless and ducted characteristics. Based on conventional hull–engine–propeller matching theory and propeller design methodology, this study proposes a novel hull–engine–propeller matching approach tailored specifically to RDTs. The method enables rapid matching by using open-water characteristics for hull–engine–propeller matching. In the absence of open-water test data for shaftless propellers, key parameters derived from ducted propeller tests are used for matching based on open-water characteristics to design the shaftless propeller. The propeller is then optimized through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to achieve the required thrust performance, effectively enabling an equivalent replacement. The proposed method provides a practical framework for selecting and designing RDTs, improves overall propulsion efficiency, and offers specific guidelines for determining optimal motor design parameters.
