This study investigated white wastewater (WW) as a potential source of antimicrobial peptides, employing hydrolysis with Pronase E followed by separation through electrodialysis with ultrafiltration membranes (EDUF) to increase the value of dairy components within a circular economy framework. The WW hydrolysate was divided into two key fractions: the cationic recovery compartment (CRC) and the anionic recovery compartment (ARC). The EDUF process effectively separated peptides, with peptide migration rates reaching 6.83 ± 0.59 g/m2·h for CRC and 6.19 ± 0.66 g/m2·h for ARC. Furthermore, relative energy consumption (REC) increased from 1.15 Wh/g to 2.05 Wh/g over three hours, in line with trends observed in recent studies on electrodialysis energy use. Although 29 peptides were statistically selected from the CRC (20) and ARC (9) compartments, no antibacterial activity was exhibited against Clostridium tyrobutyricum and Pseudomonas aeruginosa; however, antifungal activity was observed in the feed and ARC compartments. Peptides from the ARC demonstrated activity against Mucor racemosus (MIC = 0.156 mg/mL) and showed selective antifungal effects against Penicillium commune (MIC = 0.156 mg/mL). This innovative approach paves the way for improving the recovery of anionic peptides through further optimization of the EDUF process. Future perspectives include synthesizing selected peptides and evaluating their antifungal efficacy against these and other microbial strains, offering exciting potential for applications in food preservation and beyond. Existing approaches to social media sentiment analysis typically focus on static classification, offering limited foresight into how public opinion evolves. This study addresses that gap by introducing the Multi-Feature Sentiment-Driven Forecasting (MFSF) framework, a novel pipeline that enhances sentiment trend prediction by integrating rich contextual information from text. Using state-of-the-art transformer models on the Sentiment140 dataset, our framework extracts three concurrent signals from each tweet: sentiment polarity, aspect-based scores (e.g., ‘price’ and ‘service’), and topic embeddings. These features are aggregated into a daily multivariate time series. We then employ a SARIMAX model to forecast future sentiment, using the extracted aspect and topic data as predictive exogenous variables. Our results, validated on the historical Sentiment140 Twitter dataset, demonstrate the framework’s superior performance. The proposed multivariate model achieved a 26.6% improvement in forecasting accuracy (RMSE) over a traditional univariate ARIMA baseline. The analysis confirmed that conversational aspects like ‘service’ and ‘quality’ are statistically significant predictors of future sentiment. By leveraging the contextual drivers of conversation, the MFSF framework provides a more accurate and interpretable tool for businesses and policymakers to proactively monitor and anticipate shifts in public opinion. Background: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown consistent efficacy in individuals with psychosis, as supported by many trials. One classical distinction is that between affective and non-affective psychosis. Few studies have specifically examined the possible moderating role of substantial affective elements. In this systematic review and meta-regression analysis, we assess how CBT response differs across the affective spectrum in psychosis. Methods: We included studies assessing various CBT modalities, including third-wave therapies, administered in people with psychosis. The study protocol is published in the Open Science Framework. Meta-regression was conducted to assess whether the proportion of participants with affective psychosis (AP), as proxied by a documented diagnosis of schizoaffective (SZA) disorder, moderated CBT efficacy across positive, negative, and depressive symptom domains. Results: The literature search identified 4457 records, of which 39 studies were included. The median proportion of SZA disorder participants was 17%, with a total of 422 AP participants represented. Meta-regression showed a trend toward lower CBT efficacy for positive symptoms with a higher SZA disorder proportion (β = +0.10 SMD per 10% increase in AP; p = 0.12), though it was not statistically significant. No significant associations were found for negative (β = +0.05; p = 0.73) or depressive symptoms (β = −0.02; p = 0.78). Heterogeneity was substantial across all models (I2 ranging from 54% to 80%), and funnel plot asymmetry was observed in negative and depressive symptoms, indicating possible publication bias. Risk of bias assessment showed the anticipated inherent difficulty of psychotherapies in blinding and possibly dropout rates affecting some studies. Conclusions: Affective symptoms may reduce the effectiveness of CBT for positive symptoms in psychotic disorders, although the findings did not reach statistical significance. Other patient-level characteristics in psychosis could indicate which patients can benefit most from CBT modalities. Full article

Climate change has a significant negative impact on agriculture and food production. This trend requires technological development and the adaptation of new technologies in both the grapevine production and winemaking sectors. High temperatures and heat accumulation during the growing season result in faster ripening and a higher sugar content, leading to a higher alcohol content during fermentation. The negative consequences are an imbalanced wine character and consumer reluctance, as lower alcoholic beverages are now in high demand. Over the last decade, several methods have been developed to handle this impact and reduce the alcohol content of wines. In this study, we used the MASTERMIND® REMOVE membrane-based dealcoholization system to reduce the alcohol concentration in of Pinot gris wines from 12.02% v/v to 10.69% v/v and to investigate the effect on analytical parameters in three steps (0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% reductions) along the treatment. To evaluate the impact of the partial alcohol reduction and identify correlations between the wine chemical parameters, data were analyzed with ANOVA, PCA, multivariate linear regression and cluster analysis. The results showed that except for the extract, sugar content and proline content, the treatment had a significant effect on the chemical parameters. Both free and total SO2 levels were significantly reduced as well as volatile acid, glycerol and succinic acid levels. It must be highlighted that some parameters were not differing significantly between the untreated and the final wine, while the change was statistically verified in the intermediate steps of the partial alcohol reduction. This was the case for example for n-Propanol, i-Amylalcohol, Acetaldehyde, and Ethyl acetate. The multivariate linear regression model explained 18.84% of the total variance, indicating a modest but meaningful relationship between the alcohol content and the investigated analytical parameters. Our results showed that even if the applied instrument significantly modified some of the wine chemical parameters, those changes would not influence significantly the wine sensory attributes. The Correlation Between Cracked Teeth and National Insurance Coverage of Dental Implants in South Korea: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis

Background/Objectives: The expansion of National Health Insurance (NHI) coverage for dental implants in South Korea has substantially increased implant placements among older adults. While implants offer functional and esthetic benefits, their lack of periodontal ligaments alters occlusal force distribution, potentially increasing biomechanical stress on adjacent or opposing teeth. This study aimed to investigate the association between the increased number of dental implants and the incidence of cracked teeth following the introduction of implant insurance. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted using the Clinical Data Warehouse of Seoul St. Mary’s Dental Hospital. Patients who underwent molar crown restorations between 2014 and 2022 were included. The incidence and clinical features of cracked teeth were compared before (2014–2015) and after (2016–2022) the introduction of implant insurance. Statistical analyses assessed differences in symptom presentation, pulp status, and treatment outcomes. Results: Among 5044 molars restored with crowns, 1692 were diagnosed with cracks. The incidence of cracked teeth significantly increased after NHI coverage for implants (25.5% vs. 32.6%, p < 0.001). Cases after insurance implementation showed fewer signs and symptoms at initial presentation (67.4% vs. 50.0%, p < 0.001), reduced irreversible pulpitis (37.2% vs. 25.8%, p < 0.001), and increased preservation of pulp vitality (46.9% vs. 57.8%, p < 0.001). These shifts may reflect changes in occlusal adjustment practices and earlier clinical intervention. Conclusions: The findings suggest a temporal link between increased implant placement and the rising incidence of cracked teeth. Implant-induced occlusal changes may contribute to this trend. Careful occlusal evaluation and follow-up are essential after implant placement, and further prospective studies are warranted to confirm causality and refine prevention strategies. Full article

This study analyzes spatiotemporal aridity dynamics in Central Kazakhstan (1960–2022) using a monthly Aridity Index (AI = P/PET), where P is precipitation and PET is potential evapotranspiration, Mann–Kendall trend analysis, and climate zone classification. Results reveal a northeast–southwest aridity gradient, with Aridity Index ranging from 0.11 to 0.14 in southern deserts to 0.43 in the Kazakh Uplands. Between 1960–1990 and 1991–2022, southern regions experienced intensified aridity, with Aridity Index declining from 0.12–0.15 to 0.10–0.14, while northern mountainous areas became more humid, where Aridity Index increased from 0.40–0.44 to 0.41–0.46. Seasonal analysis reveals divergent patterns, with winter showing improved moisture conditions (52.4% reduction in arid lands), contrasting sharply with aridification in spring and summer. Summer emerges as the most extreme season, with hyper-arid zones (8%) along with expanding arid territories (69%), while autumn shows intermediate conditions with notable dry sub-humid areas (5%) in northwestern regions. Statistical analysis confirms these observations, with northern areas showing positive Aridity Index trends (+0.007/10 years) against southwestern declines (−0.003/10 years). Key drivers include rising temperatures (with recent degradation) and variable precipitation (long-term drying followed by winter and spring), and PET fluctuations linked to temperature. Since 1991, arid zones have expanded from 40% to 47% of the region, with semi-arid lands transitioning to arid, with a northward shift of the boundary. These changes are strongly seasonal, highlighting the vulnerability of Central Kazakhstan to climate-driven aridification. Full article

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly altered the clinical and microbiological landscape of respiratory tract infections (RTIs), potentially reshaping pathogen distribution and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles across care settings. Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess temporal trends in respiratory bacterial pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, and polymicrobial infections across three pandemic phases—pre-COVID (2018–2019), COVID (2020–2022), and post-COVID (2022–2024)—in hospitalized and ambulatory patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 1827 respiratory bacterial isolates (hospitalized patients, n = 1032; ambulatory patients, n = 795) collected at a tertiary care center in Northern Italy. Data were stratified by care setting, anatomical site, and pandemic phase. Species identification and susceptibility testing followed EUCAST guidelines. Statistical analysis included chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests. Results: In hospitalized patients, a significant increase in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (from 45.5% pre-COVID to 58.6% post-COVID, p < 0.0001) and Acinetobacter baumannii (from 1.2% to 11.1% during COVID, p < 0.0001) was observed, with 100% extensively drug-resistant (XDR) rates for A. baumannii during the pandemic. Conversely, Staphylococcus aureus significantly declined from 23.6% pre-COVID to 13.7% post-COVID (p = 0.0012). In ambulatory patients, polymicrobial infections peaked at 41.2% during COVID, frequently involving co-isolation of Candida spp. Notably, resistance to benzylpenicillin in Streptococcus pneumoniae reached 80% (4/5 isolates) in hospitalized patients during COVID, and carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa (CRPA) significantly increased post-pandemic in ambulatory patients (0% pre-COVID vs. 23.5% post-COVID, p = 0.0014). Conclusions: The pandemic markedly shifted respiratory pathogen dynamics and resistance profiles, with distinct trends observed in hospital and community settings. Persistent resistance phenotypes and frequent polymicrobial infections, particularly involving Candida spp. in outpatients, underscore the need for targeted surveillance and antimicrobial stewardship strategies. Purpose: Our understanding of the influence of preterm birth and related perinatal exposures on early brain development is limited, hampering personalized optimization of neuroprotective strategies. This study assesses the effect of gestational age (GA) at birth on brain volumes at term-equivalent age (TEA) in infants without overt brain injury born across the GA spectrum. Methods: A cohort of infants born across the GA spectrum (25–40 weeks’ gestation) underwent 3T brain MRI around TEA (40–46 weeks postmenstrual age). Eight brain regions, intracranial and total tissue volumes were segmented using MANTiS (morphologically adaptive neonatal tissue segmentation toolbox). Segmentations were visually quality-checked and excluded if segmentation failed. Absolute TEA volume in relation to GA was assessed using univariate and multivariate (correction for postmenstrual age) linear regression analysis. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Post hoc scatter plots of brain volumes relative to intracranial volumes were created. Results: Fifty infants were included (mean GA = 35.0 [SD = 3.3, range = 25.7–40.1] weeks). A higher GA at birth was significantly related to lower cerebrospinal fluid (p = 0.004) and amygdala (p = 0.02) volumes; no significant relation was found between GA and other volumes. Post hoc analyses showed positive trends between GA and several brain structures, including total brain tissue, cortical gray matter, deep gray matter, hippocampus, cerebellum and brainstem volumes. Conclusions: Our results suggest that GA has an effect on TEA brain volumes that is independent of brain lesions, with lower GA being associated with smaller brain tissue volumes and significantly larger cerebrospinal fluid volume. Preterm birth and related exposures may thus affect early brain growth and contribute to neurodevelopmental challenges encountered by preterm-born children. Full article

The accurate perception of visual stimuli in human–machine systems is crucial for improving system safety, usability, and task performance. The widespread adoption of digital technology has significantly increased the importance of visual interfaces and information. Therefore, it is essential to design visual interfaces and information with user characteristics in mind to ensure accurate perception of visual information. This study employed the Cognitive Perceptual Assessment for Driving (CPAD) to evaluate and compare gender differences in the ability to perceive visual signals within complex visual stimuli. The experimental setup included a computer with CPAD installed, along with a touch monitor, mouse, joystick, and keyboard. The participants included 11 male and 20 female students, with an average age of 22 for males and 21 for females. Prior to the experiment, participants were instructed to determine whether a signal stimulus was present: if a square, presented as the signal, was included in the visual stimulus, they moved the joystick to the left; otherwise, they moved it to the right. Each participant performed a total of 40 trials. The entire experiment was recorded on video to measure overall response times. The experiment measured the number of correct detections of signal presence, response times, the number of misses (failing to detect the signal when present), and false alarms (detecting the signal when absent). The analysis of experimental data revealed no significant differences in perceptual ability or response times for visual stimuli between genders. However, males demonstrated slightly superior perceptual ability and marginally shorter response times compared to females. Analyses of sensitivity and response bias, based on signal detection theory, also indicated a slightly higher perceptual ability in males. In conclusion, although these differences were not statistically significant, males demonstrated a slightly better perception ability for visual stimuli. The findings of this study can inform the design of information, user interfaces, and visual displays in human–machine systems, particularly in light of the recent trend of increased female participation in the industrial sector. Future research will focus on diverse types of visual information to further validate these findings. Full article

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of surgical margin status, tumor size, and adjuvant radiotherapy on local control, overall survival, and postoperative complications in patients undergoing surgery for sacral chordoma. Methods: This retrospective analysis included 18 patients who underwent surgical treatment for primary sacral chordoma between 2002 and 2019. The variables assessed included patient demographics, tumor size and volume, surgical margin status, adjuvant radiotherapy, local recurrence, overall survival, and postoperative complications. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan–Meier method, and appropriate parametric or non-parametric tests were used for group comparisons. Results: The cohort’s mean age was 62.6 ± 7.9 years, with a mean follow-up of 8.8 ± 4.1 years and an average tumor volume of 235 cm3. Negative surgical margins (R0) were achieved in 44% of patients. Local recurrence occurred in 50% of R0 cases and 83% of R2 cases. Negative surgical margins (R0) were associated with significantly lower local recurrence rates compared to R1 and R2 resections (Fisher’s exact test, p = 0.043), and showed a trend toward improved overall survival (p = 0.077). Overall survival was significantly lower in patients with tumors measuring ≥ 5 cm (p = 0.031). Adjuvant radiotherapy did not significantly reduce local recurrence (p = 0.245); however, an increase in complication rates was observed, although this association did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.108). Bladder dysfunction was significantly more frequent in patients undergoing S1–S2 resections (p = 0.036). Conclusions: Achieving negative surgical margins improves local control and may prolong survival. Larger tumors (≥5 cm) were associated with worse prognosis. While adjuvant RT may be considered in selected high-risk cases, its efficacy in preventing recurrence is unclear and may increase complication rates. Full article

Arid and semi-arid areas serve a critical regulatory function within the global carbon cycle. Understanding the response mechanisms of vegetation productivity to variations in moisture availability represents a fundamental scientific challenge in elucidating terrestrial carbon dynamics. This study systematically disentangled the respective influences of summer surface soil moisture (RSM) and precipitation (PRE) on gross primary productivity (GPP) across arid and semi-arid regions of China from 2000 to 2022. Utilizing GPP datasets alongside correlation analysis, ridge regression, and data binning techniques, the investigation yielded several key findings: (1) Both GPP and RSM exhibited significant upward trends within the study area, whereas precipitation showed no statistically significant trend; notably, GPP demonstrated the highest rate of increase at 0.455 Cg m−2 a−1. (2) Decoupling analysis indicated a coupled relationship between RSM and PRE; however, their individual effects on GPP were not merely a consequence of this coupling. Controlling for evapotranspiration and root-zone soil moisture interference, the analysis revealed that under conditions of elevated RSM, the average increase in summer–autumn GPP (SAGPP) was 0.249, significantly surpassing the increase observed under high-PRE conditions (−0.088). Areas dominated by RSM accounted for 62.13% of the total study region. Furthermore, examination of the aridity gradient demonstrated that the predominance of RSM intensified with increasing aridity, reaching its peak influence in extremely arid zones. This research provides a quantitative assessment of the differential impacts of RSM and PRE on vegetation productivity in China’s arid and semi-arid areas, thereby offering a vital theoretical foundation for improving predictions of terrestrial carbon sink dynamics under future climate change scenarios. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of four working heights on lumbar biomechanics during wall construction tasks, focusing on work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Methods: Fifteen young male participants performed simulated mortar-spreading and bricklaying tasks while actual body movements were recorded using Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors. Muscle activities of the lumbar erector spinae (ES), quadratus lumborum (QL), multifidus (MF), gluteus maximus (GM), and iliopsoas (IL) were estimated using a 3D musculoskeletal (MSK) model and measured via surface electromyography (sEMG). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was conducted to identify the significant differences in muscle activities across four working heights (i.e., foot, knee, waist, and shoulder). Results: Findings showed that working at foot-level height resulted in the highest muscle activity (7.6% to 40.6% increase), particularly in the ES and QL muscles, indicating an increased risk of WMSDs. The activities of the ES, MF, and GM muscles were statistically significant across both tasks and all working heights (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Both MSK and sEMG analyses indicated significantly lower muscle activities at knee and waist heights, suggesting these as the best working positions (47 cm to 107 cm) for minimizing the risk of WMSDs. Conversely, working at foot and shoulder heights was identified as a significant risk factor for WMSDs. Additionally, the similar trends observed between MSK simulations and sEMG data suggest that MSK modeling can effectively substitute for sEMG in future studies. These findings provide valuable insights into ergonomic work positioning to reduce WMSD risks among wall construction workers. Full article

Background and Objectives: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) following pelvic osteotomy for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is technically challenging due to altered acetabular morphology. This study aimed to compare radiographic cup position and perioperative characteristics of THA after three common pelvic osteotomies—periacetabular osteotomy (PAO), shelf procedure, and Chiari osteotomy—with primary THA in Crowe type I DDH. Methods: A retrospective review identified 25 hips that underwent conversion THA after pelvic osteotomy (PAO = 12, shelf = 8, Chiari = 5) and 25 primary THAs without prior osteotomy. One-to-one matching was performed based on sex (exact match), age (within 5 years), and BMI (within 2 kg/m2) without the use of propensity scores. Cup inclination, radiographic anteversion, center-edge (CE) angle, and cup height were measured on standardized anteroposterior radiographs (ICC = 0.91). Operative time, estimated blood loss, and use of bulk bone grafts or reinforcement rings were reviewed. One-way ANOVA with Dunnett’s post hoc test and chi-square test were used for statistical comparison. Results: Cup inclination, anteversion, and CE angle did not differ significantly among groups. Cup height was significantly greater in the PAO group than in controls (29.0 mm vs. 21.8 mm; p = 0.0075), indicating a more proximal hip center. The Chiari and shelf groups showed upward trends, though not significant. Mean operative time tended to be longer after PAO (123 min vs. 93 min; p = 0.078). Bulk bone grafts and reinforcement rings were more frequently required in the PAO group (17%; p = 0.036 vs. control), and occasionally in Chiari cases, but not in shelf or control groups. Conclusions: THA after PAO is associated with higher cup placement and greater need for reconstructive devices, indicating increased technical complexity. In contrast, shelf and Chiari conversions more closely resemble primary THA. Preoperative planning should consider hip center translation and bone-stock restoration in post-osteotomy THA. Toothpaste is an essential oral hygiene product commonly used to sustain oral health due to its incorporation of antimicrobial agents. Numerous functional toothpastes enriched with antimicrobial agents have been developed and are available to consumers. This study evaluates the antimicrobial and antibiofilm efficacy of 12 commercially available toothpaste products, including those with specialized functions. Statistical significance was assessed to validate the differences observed among the toothpaste samples. Their effects on Streptococcus mutans, the primary pathogen responsible for dental caries, were evaluated. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined, and bacterial growth was measured to compare antimicrobial activities. Toothpaste containing 1000 μg/mL fluoride and whitening toothpaste exhibited the strongest antimicrobial effects, effectively inhibiting S. mutans growth. Additionally, bamboo salt-enriched and tartar-control toothpaste demonstrated inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. Assays to evaluate the ability of cells to form biofilms and the expression of genes involved in biofilm formation revealed a partial correlation between biofilm formation and spaP, gtfB, gtfC, and gtfD expression, although some showed opposite trends. Collectively, this study provides valuable insights into the antimicrobial and biofilm inhibition capabilities of commercial toothpastes against S. mutans, offering a foundation for evaluating the efficacy of functional toothpaste products. Background: The implementation of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has proven effective, offering significant benefits for patient outcomes. We therefore investigated trends in the implementation of IVT and MT in Germany between 2015 and 2023. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis using German Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) statistics from 2015 to 2023. Treatment numbers were analyzed annually based on OPS codes. We examined the age and sex distribution of patients undergoing these treatments. Additionally, we analyzed all hospital cases coded with ICD-10 for acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Results: Between 2015 and 2023, the number of AIS cases in Germany slightly declined from 250,802 to 248,107 (−1.1%), with the largest annual decrease (−4.3%) occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic (2019–2020). Despite this, the use of IVT increased from 40,766 cases (16.25%) in 2015 to 48,378 (19.50%) in 2023. MT usage rose even more sharply, from 7840 cases (3.13%) to 22,445 (9.05%). Among MT recipients, the proportion of patients aged ≥80 years rose significantly, from 27.2% to 42.1%. In this age group, women consistently comprised the majority of MT patients—65.4% in 2015 and 65.5% in 2023. Conclusions: Despite a stable stroke incidence, the use of IVT—and particularly MT—continued to increase in Germany from 2015 to 2023, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. MT usage nearly tripled, especially among patients aged ≥80 years. These trends highlight a resilient stroke care system and underscore the need for future planning to meet the rising demand for endovascular treatment in an aging population. Full article
