In this study, an effective strengthening method was investigated to improve the seismic performance of masonry brick walls. The strengthening method comprised the use of shotcrete, which was applied in both glass fiber-reinforced and unreinforced forms for steel plates and tie rods. Thirteen wall specimens constructed with vertical perforated masonry block bricks were tested under diagonal compression in accordance with ASTM E519 (2010). Reinforcement plates with different thicknesses (1.5 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm) were anchored using 6 mm diameter tie rods. A specially designed steel frame and an experimental loading program with controlled deformation increments were employed to simulate the effects of reinforced concrete beam frame system on walls under the effect of diagonal loads caused by seismic loads. In addition, numerical simulations were conducted using three-dimensional finite element models in Abaqus Explicit software to validate the experimental results. The findings demonstrated that increasing the number of tie rods enhanced the shear strength and overall behavior of the walls. Steel plates effectively absorbed tensile stresses and limited crack propagation, while the fiber reinforcement in the shotcrete further improved wall strength and ductility. Overall, the proposed strengthening techniques provided significant improvements in the seismic resistance and energy absorption capacity of masonry walls, offering practical and reliable solutions to enhance the safety and durability of existing masonry structures. This paper presents field investigations of a corrugated steel soil–steel arch structure with a span of 25.7 m and a rise of 9.0 m—currently the largest single-span structure of its kind in Europe. The structure, serving as a wildlife crossing along the DK16 expressway in northeastern Poland, was constructed using deep corrugated steel plates (500 mm× 237 mm) made from S315MC steel, without additional reinforcements such as stiffening ribs or geosynthetics. The study focused on monitoring the structural behavior during the critical backfilling phase. Displacements and strains were recorded using 34 electro-resistant strain gauges and a geodetic laser system at successive backfill levels, with particular attention to the loading stage at the crown. The measured results were compared with predictions based on the Swedish Design Method (SDM). The SDM equations did not accurately predict internal forces during backfilling. At the crown level, bending moments and axial forces were overestimated by approximately 69% and 152%, respectively. At the final backfill level, the SDM underestimated bending moments by 55% and overestimated axial forces by 90%. These findings highlight limitations of current design standards and emphasize the need for revised analytical models and long-term monitoring of large-span soil–steel structures. Full article

The stability of shield tunnel segmental linings is highly sensitive to the lateral pressure coefficient, especially under weak, heterogeneous, and variable geological conditions. However, the mechanical behavior of steel plate-reinforced linings under such conditions remains insufficiently characterized. This study aims to investigate the effects of varying lateral pressures on the structural performance of reinforced tunnel linings. To achieve this, a custom-designed full-circumference loading and unloading self-balancing apparatus was developed for scaled-model testing of shield tunnels. The experimental methodology allowed for precise control of loading paths, enabling the simulation of realistic ground stress states and the assessment of internal force distribution, joint response, and load transfer mechanisms during the elastic stage of the structure. Results reveal that increased lateral pressure enhances the stiffness and bearing capacity of the reinforced lining. The presence and orientation of segment joints, as well as the bonding performance between epoxy resin and expansion bolts at the reinforcement interface, significantly influence stress redistribution in steel plate-reinforced zones. These findings not only deepen the understanding of tunnel behavior in complex geological environments but also offer practical guidance for optimizing reinforcement design and improving the durability and safety of shield tunnels. Reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams constructed with low-strength concrete are susceptible to sudden splitting failures in the strut region due to shear–compression stresses. To mitigate this vulnerability, various strengthening techniques, including steel plates, fiber-reinforced polymer sheets, and cementitious composites, have been explored to confine the strut area. This study investigates the structural performance of RC deep beams with low-strength concrete, strengthened externally using an Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) layer. To ensure effective confinement and uniform shear distribution, shear reinforcement was provided at equal intervals with configurations of zero, one, and two vertical shear reinforcements. Four-point bending tests revealed that the ECC layer significantly enhanced the shear capacity, increasing load-carrying capacity by 51.6%, 54.7%, and 46.7% for beams with zero, one, and two shear reinforcements, respectively. Failure analysis through non-linear finite element modeling corroborated experimental observations, confirming shear–compression failure characterized by damage in the concrete struts. The strut-and-tie method, modified to incorporate the tensile strength of ECC and shear reinforcement actual stress values taken from the FE analysis, was used to predict the shear capacity. The predicted values were within 10% of the experimental results, underscoring the reliability of the analytical approach. Overall, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of ECC in improving shear performance and mitigating strut failure in RC deep beams made with low-strength concrete. Full article

The superb dynamic performance of steel-plate composite (SC) structures under unexpected impact loading depends on the good design of the connection between the SC wall and foundation. This study investigated the flexural behavior and dynamic responses of SC wall-to-foundation connections subjected to low-velocity impact. Impact tests were performed on three SC connection specimens to evaluate failure mode, impact force, deflection, and strain responses. The effects of concrete strength grade and impact energy were analyzed in detail. All specimens exhibited flexural failure, with three distinct stages observed during impact. The experimental results demonstrated that compared to the specimen with C30 concrete, the specimen with C50 concrete significantly reduced wall damage, decreased deflections, and enhanced deflection recovery ability. It can be concluded that increasing the concrete strength grade effectively improves the impact resistance of SC wall-to-foundation connections. In addition, peak impact force, global deflection response, residual strains, and interface crack length were highly sensitive to changes in impact energy, whereas deflection recovery exhibited lower sensitivity. Furthermore, a finite element model was developed and validated against experimental results. Parametric studies explored the influence of key parameters with expanded ranges on the impact responses of SC wall-to-foundation connections. Full article

The performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures will gradually decrease over time, posing a threat to the safety of buildings. Although the performance of some buildings may still meet the safety requirements, they cannot meet new usage requirements. Therefore, this paper proposes a new-type joint to promote the development of research on the reinforcement and renovation of RC frame structures in response to this situation. The RC beams and columns of the joints are connected by embedded horizontal steel plate (a single plate with dimension of 150 mm × 200 mm × 5 mm), and the beams and columns are individually wrapped in steel. Through conducting low cyclic loading tests, this paper analyzes the influence of carrying out wrapped steel treatment and the thickness of wrapped steel of the beam and connector on mechanical performance indicators such as hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation. The experimental results indicate that the reinforcement using steel plate can significantly improve the dynamic performance of the joint. The effect of changing the thickness of the connector on the dynamic performance of the specimen is not significant, while increasing the thickness of wrapped steel of beam can effectively improve the overall strength of joint. The research results of this paper will help promote the application of reinforcement and renovation technology for existing buildings, and improve the quality of human living. Full article

Seismic Performance and Moment–Rotation Relationship Modeling of Novel Prefabricated Frame Joints

This study investigates two novel prefabricated frame joints: prestressed steel sleeve-connected prefabricated reinforced concrete joints (PSFRC) and non-prestressed steel sleeve-connected prefabricated reinforced concrete joints (SSFRC). A total of three PSFRC specimens, four SSFRC specimens, and one cast-in-place joint were designed and fabricated. Seismic performance tests were conducted using different end-plate thicknesses, grout strengths, stiffener configurations, and prestressing tendon configurations. The experimental results showed that all specimens experienced beam end failures, and three failure modes occurred: (1) failure of the end plate of the beam sleeve, (2) failure of the variable cross-section of the prefabricated beam, and (3) failure of prefabricated beams at the connection with the steel sleeves. The load-bearing capacity and initial stiffness of the structure are increased by 35.41% and 32.64%, respectively, by increasing the thickness of the end plate. Specimens utilizing C80 grout exhibited a 39.05% higher load capacity than those with lower-grade materials. Adding stiffening ribs improved the initial stiffness substantially. Specimen XF2 had 219.08% higher initial stiffness than XF1, confirming the efficacy of stiffeners in enhancing joint rigidity. The configuration of the prestressed tendons significantly influenced the load-bearing capacity. Specimen YL2 with symmetrical double tendon bundles demonstrated a 27.27% higher ultimate load capacity than specimen YL1 with single centrally placed tendon bundles. An analytical model to calculate the moment–rotation relationship was established following the evaluation criteria specified in Eurocode 3. The results demonstrated a good agreement, providing empirical references for practical engineering applications. Full article

This study signifies the development and characterization of a composite material with a metallic matrix of aluminum reinforced with a steel mesh, utilizing centrifugal casting technology. An evaluation was conducted to ascertain the influence of the formulation process and the presence of the insert on the mechanical behavior with regard to tensile strength. The aluminum matrix was obtained from commercial and scrap alloys, elaborated by advanced methods of degassing and chemical modification. Meanwhile, the steel mesh reinforcement was cleaned, copper plated, and preheated to optimize wetting and, consequently, adhesion. The structural characterization was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses (EDX), which highlighted a well-defined interface and uniform copper distribution. The composite was produced by means of horizontal-axis centrifugal casting in a fiberglass mold, followed by cold rolling to obtain flat specimens. A total of eight tensile specimens were examined, with measured ultimate tensile strengths ranging from 78.5 to 119.8 (MPa). A thorough examination of the fractured specimens revealed a brittle fracture mechanism, devoid of substantial plastic deformation. The onset of failures was frequently observed at the interface between the aluminum matrix and the steel mesh. The use of SEM and EDX investigations led to the confirmation of the uniformity of the copper coating and the absence of significant porosity or interfacial defects. A bimodal distribution of tensile strength values was observed, a phenomenon that is likely attributable to variations in mesh positioning and local differences in solidification. A correlation was established between the experimental results and an analytical polynomial model, thereby confirming a reasonable fit. In sum, the present study provides a substantial foundation for the development of metal matrix composites with enhanced performance, specifically designed for challenging structural applications. This method also demonstrates potential for recycling aluminum scrap into high-performance composites with controlled microstructure and mechanical integrity. Full article

Understanding the structural behaviour of flat plate systems during fire exposure is critical for ensuring the safety of occupants and emergency personnel. Flat slabs, a widely used structural system, undergo significant thermal deformations in fire, which increase demands on supporting columns and reduce the stiffness and strength of concrete and steel. While experimental fire tests have provided valuable data to understand the behaviour of isolated components of flat slabs, numerical analysis is the only route to comprehending the structural behaviour of full-scale flat plate structures during fire exposure. ABAQUS is commonly used for modelling reinforced concrete (RC) structures under fire, with two prevailing techniques: (1) solid element modelling for concrete and truss reinforcement and (2) shell element modelling with embedded steel layers and line-column elements. However, uncertainties remain regarding the influence of modelling parameters such as dilation angle and concrete tensile stress, and the impact of surface fire exposure has not been comprehensively studied. This study presents a novel contribution by conducting a detailed numerical investigation of a full-scale flat plate structure exposed to fire using both modelling approaches. The shell-element model was validated against experimental data and used to evaluate the effect of dilation angle and tensile strength assumptions. A unique aspect of this work is the assessment of fire exposure on different slab surfaces, including bottom, top, and both, which provides insights into slab deflections and column displacements under different surface fire exposure scenarios. The structure was then modelled using solid elements to systematically compare modelling techniques. The results highlight key differences between approaches and guide for selecting the most suitable modelling strategies for fire-exposed flat plate systems. Full article

Perforated materials are widely used in various fields, including in medicine, for example, in trays for placing and storing cutting tools and for sterilizing disposable materials. Currently, the effective elastic modulus of orthopedic plates is higher than the effective elastic modulus of human bone tissue (the effective elastic modulus of bone ranges between 10 and 30 GPa, depending on the type of bone). This difference in effective elastic modulus leads to the phenomenon known as the stress shielding effect, where the bone experiences insufficient mechanical loading. One potential approach to influence the effective elastic modulus of orthopedic plates is through perforations in their design. Stainless steel 316L has garnered significant interest among medical engineering specialists due to its lower weight, higher strength, and superior biocompatibility. The elastic properties of perforated constructions are influenced by their internal quality, dimensions, shapes, and the overall perforation area, making their study important. An experiment was conducted on perforated plates of 316L stainless steel with perforation areas ranging from 3% to 20%. Increasing the perforation area in perforated 316L stainless steel plates (perforated plates had dimensions of 50 mm in height, 20 mm in width, and 1 mm in thickness; hole diameter of 1 mm; and pitch between the holes of 2, 3, 4, and 5 mm) from 3% to 20% resulted in a decrease in Young’s modulus of the perforated plates from 199 GPa to 147.8 GPa, determined using a non-destructive method for determining resonant frequencies using a laser vibrometer. A three-point bending test on the perforated plates confirmed these findings, demonstrating a consistent trend of decreasing Young’s modulus with increasing perforation area, from 194.4 GPa at 3.14% to 142.6 GPa at 19.63%. The three-point bending method was also employed in this study to determine the Young’s modulus of the perforated plates in order to reinforce the obtained results on the elastic properties by determining the resonance frequencies with a laser vibrometer. It was discovered that the Young’s modulus of a perforated plate cannot be determined solely by the perforation area, as it depends on both the perforation diameter and the pitch between the perforations. In addition, finite element method (FEM) simulations were conducted, revealing that increasing perforation diameter and decreasing pitch significantly reduce the Young’s modulus—with values dropping from 201.5 GPa to 72.6 GPa across various configurations. Traditional fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) retrofit methods can restore the strength of reinforced concrete columns well, but stiffness is also partly restored. To increase the initial stiffness of retrofitted columns, this study investigated the seismic behavior of retrofitted resilient reinforced concrete (RRC) columns that were retrofitted by different methods, including high-strength mortar retrofit, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) retrofit, and CFRP and steel plate retrofit. In addition, the effect of the axial load was also considered. Quasi-static tests were conducted twice on five specimens, i.e., before and after repairing. The first test was used to create earthquake damage, and the second test was used to compare the seismic behavior of the retrofitted columns. The experimental results indicated that the CFRP retrofit method, whether with a steel plate or not, can restore the lateral resistance capacity well; furthermore, the drift-hardening behavior and self-centering performance were well maintained. The residual drift ratio of the CFRP-retrofitted column was less than 0.5%, even at a drift ratio of 3.5%, and less than 1% at the 6% drift ratio. However, the initial stiffness was only partly restored using the CFRP sheet. The introduction of steel plates was beneficial in restoring the initial stiffness, and the stiffness recovery rate remained above 90% when CFRP sheets and steel plates were used simultaneously. The strain distribution of the CFRP sheet showed that the steel plate did work at the initial loading stage, but the effect was limited. By using the steel plate, the CFRP hoop strain on the south side was reduced by 68% at the 6% drift ratio in the push direction and 38% in the pull direction. The axial strain of CFRP cannot be ignored due to the larger value than the hoop strain, which means that the biaxial stress condition should be considered when using an FRP sheet to retrofit RC columns. This study presents a systematic optimization of GTAW welding parameters to achieve a pipe-to-pipe butt weld with a root height consistently below 2 mm when joining stainless-steel 316L material, employing the Taguchi design of experiments. To the authors’ knowledge, no similar studies have been conducted to explore the optimization of welding parameters specifically aimed at minimizing weld root height under 2 mm in stainless-steel EO pipeline welding applications. This gap in the existing literature highlights the innovative aspect of the current study, which seeks to address these challenges and improve welding precision and joint reliability. Root height, also referred to as weld root reinforcement, is defined as the excess weld metal protruding beyond the inner surface root side of a butt-welded joint. The input parameters considered are the welding current, voltage, speed, and root gap configurations of 1, 1.5, and 2 mm. Welding was performed according to the Taguchi L-09 experimental design. Nine weld samples were evaluated using liquid penetrant testing to detect surface-breaking defects, such as porosity, laps, and cracks; X-ray radiography to identify internal defects; and profile radiography to assess erosion, corrosion, and root height. Among the nine welded plate samples, the optimal root height (less than 2 mm) was selected and further validated through the welding of a one-pipe sample. An additional macro examination was conducted to confirm the root height and assess the overall root weld integrity and quality. Full article

Dynamic Response and Computational Modeling of Truss-Reinforced Phosphogypsum-Concrete Composite Slabs Subjected to Impact Loading: A Parametric Finite Element Analysis

As a by-product of phosphate fertilizer production, phosphogypsum (PG) poses pressing environmental challenges that demand urgent resolution. To address the research gap in dynamic impact behavior of PG-modified concrete (PGC), this study developed truss-reinforced PGC slabs (PG volumetric fractions: 0% and 2%) and evaluated their impact resistance through drop-weight tests from a 3.75 m height. A systematic parametric investigation was conducted to quantify the effects of slab thickness (100–120 mm), steel plate reinforcement at the tension zone, PG content, and impact cycles. Experimental results revealed that increasing slab thickness to 120 mm reduced mid-span displacement by 13%, while incorporating steel plate reinforcement provided an additional 5.3% reduction. Notably, PG addition effectively suppressed crack propagation, transitioning failure modes from radial fracture patterns to localized mid-span damage. Finite element modeling ABAQUS (2022) validated experimental observations, demonstrating strong agreement. While optimized PG dosage (2%) exhibited limited influence on impact resistance, it enhanced PG utilization efficiency by 18%. Combined with increased slab thickness (displacement reduction: 13%), this study establishes a design framework balancing environmental sustainability and structural reliability for impact-resistant PGC applications. Within the framework of truss-reinforced concrete slabs with constant PG dosage, this study established a numerical model for geometric parameter modulation of impactors. Through systematic adjustment of the drop hammer’s contact width (a) and vertical geometric height (h), a dimensionless control parameter—aspect ratio c = h/a (0.2 ≤ c ≤ 1.8)—was proposed. Nonlinear dynamic analysis revealed that the peak impact load demonstrates an inverse proportional functional decay relationship with increasing c, yielding an empirical predictive model. These parametrized regularities provide theoretical foundations for contact interface optimization in impact-resistant structural design. Full article

Moment-resisting frames (MRFs) are characterized by high energy dissipation capacity relying on plastic hinge formation at the two ends of beams. Despite their numerous advantages, Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) profile sections used in MRF systems suffer from low ductility, which remains a dilemma. FRP profiles have emerged as a novel and valuable material with significant advancement in structural engineering. In this paper, an MRF system composed of novel gusset plate steel connections (to provide ductility) and FRP profile sections for beams and columns is proposed and investigated numerically and parametrically. The results indicate that up to a rotation of 0.04 rad, the proposed gusset plate dissipates energy, whereas the beam and columns remain essentially elastic. Accordingly, with an increase in the ratio of vertical length to thickness of the gusset plate, energy dissipation is reduced. Through an increase in the ratio of horizontal length to thickness of the gusset plate from 63.5 to 127 and 254, the ultimate strength of the connection is reduced by 4% to 10% and 3% to 7%, respectively. It is suggested that gusset plate thickness be selected in such a way that its slenderness is not less than 47. Subsequently, the required equation is proposed to achieve the optimum performance of the system. Full article

This study investigates interface sliding behavior in composite I-steel–concrete beams reinforced with a composite material plate by analyzing various connection configurations combining shear stud connectors and adhesive bonding. The degree of composite action, governed by the shear stiffness at the steel–concrete interface, plays a critical role in structural performance. An analytical model was developed based on the elasticity theory and the strain compatibility approach, assuming constant shear and normal stress across the interface. Five connection modes were considered, ranging from fully mechanical (100% shear studs) to fully adhesive (100% bonding), as well as mixed configurations. The model was validated against finite element simulations, demonstrating strong agreement with relative differences between 0.3% and 10.7% across all cases. A parametric study explored the influence of key factors such as interface layer stiffness and composite plate reinforcement material on the overall interface behavior. The results showed that adhesive bonding significantly reduces slippage at the steel–concrete interface, enhancing bond integrity, while purely mechanical connections tend to increase interface slippage. The findings provide valuable guidance for designing hybrid connection systems in composite structures to optimize performance, durability, and construction efficiency. Full article
