316L stainless steel (316L SS) exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility, but the rapid melting and solidification of the laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) process reduce the properties of the newly formed parts. This study aims to enhance the mechanical properties of PBF-LB/M PBF-LB/M-formed 316L SS parts by investigating the effects of various heat treatment temperatures. The results show that an appropriate heat treatment temperature can improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of the formed parts. Lower temperatures have minimal effects on performance; however, at 1100 °C, recrystallization occurs, resulting in more uniform grain structures, improved densification, and substantial stress relief. The residual stress is reduced by 85.59% compared to the untreated PBF-LB/M samples, while the ferrite content is significantly decreased, making the phase structure more homogeneous. Although both yield strength and tensile strength decrease, plasticity improves by 21.11%. Full article

Ti/a-C:Cr multilayer films were deposited on 316L stainless steel (SS316L) substrates using medium-frequency alternating current magnetron sputtering, with a single-layer a-C:Cr film also prepared on a titanium substrate. The influence of sputtering pressure on the film’s structure and properties was systematically investigated. Film morphology and microstructure were analyzed via X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). At a pressure of 1.4 MPa, the interfacial contact resistance (ICR) of SS316L bipolar plates (BPPs) coated with the films reached as low as 3.30 mΩ·cm2, while that of titanium BPPs was 2.90 mΩ·cm2. Under simulated proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathode conditions (70 °C, 0.6 V vs. SCE, 0.5 M H2SO4, 5 ppm HF solution), the corrosion current density, Icorr, reached optimal values of 0.69 μA·cm−2 for SS316L and 0.62 μA·cm−2 for titanium. These results demonstrate that parameter optimization enables SS316L BPPs to functionally replace titanium counterparts, offering significant cost reductions for metal BPPs and accelerating the commercialization of PEMFC technology. Taguchi and post-heat treatment methods have been used in this study to optimize the metal inert gas (MIG) welding joints between SUS304 austenite stainless steel and plain carbon SS400 steel using AWS ER 308L filler wire. The dissimilar welding joints’ microstructure and tensile strength have been examined. The findings show that the fast cooling of the weld joint and the ferrite-forming element of the filler wire cause the dendrites’ δ-ferrite phase to emerge on both the weld bead and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the SUS304 side. The stickout parameter has the largest impact on the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), next to the welding speed, welding voltage, and welding current, due to the strong impact of the heat distribution. The optimal welding parameters are a welding current of 105 A, a welding voltage of 14.5 V, a stickout of 12 mm, and a welding speed of 420 mm/min, producing the UTS value of 445.3 MPa, which is close to the predicted value of 469.2 ± 53.6 MPa. Post-heat treatment with an annealing temperature that is lower than 700 °C could improve the optimized weld joints’ strength by up to 5%. This computational study using MCNP5 evaluated the feasibility of replacing 6061-T6 aluminum with 316L stainless steel (SS-316L) for the tubes hosting the uranium slugs in the subcritical nuclear reactor Nuclear Chicago model 9000, thereby contributing to its preservation as a key resource for nuclear research and education in Mexico. Simulations and dosimetric analyses (ICRP/ICRU) confirmed subcriticality in both configurations. Notably, SS-316L demonstrated an effective attenuation of peripheral gamma radiation and a reduction in the ambient neutron dose, indicating a considerable improvement in radiological safety. Although a reduction in thermal and epithermal neutron fluence was observed, the similarity in the gamma spectrum suggests no significant alteration for gamma spectroscopic experiments. In conclusion, SS-316L presents a promising alternative that enhances radiological safety and reactor longevity, making it a worthy consideration as a replacement material. Further experimental investigation is recommended to assess material activation and the gamma dose in the vicinity of the fuel. Full article

Marine biofouling, the process of marine microorganisms, algae, and invertebrates attaching to and forming biofilms on ship hulls, underwater infrastructure, and marine equipment in ocean environments, severely impacts shipping and underwater operations by increasing fuel consumption, maintenance costs, and corrosion risks, and by threatening marine ecosystem stability via invasive species transport. This study reports the development of a hydrogel-metal-organic framework (MOF)-quorum sensing inhibitor (QSI) antifouling coating on 304 stainless steel (SS) substrates. Inspired by mussel adhesion, a hydrophilic bionic hydrogel was first constructed via metal ion coordination. The traditional metal ion source was replaced with a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) loaded with 2-(5H)-furanone (HF, a QSI) without altering coating formation. Physicochemical characterization using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, and the diffraction of x-rays (XRD) confirmed successful HF loading into ZIF-8 with intact crystal structures. Antifouling tests showed HF@ZIF-8 enhanced antibacterial inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus (97.28%) and Escherichia coli (>97%) and suppressed Chromobacterium violaceum CV026 pigment synthesis at 0.25 mg/mL (sub-growth concentration). The reconstructed PG/PVP/PEI/HF@ZIF-8 coating achieved 72.47% corrosion inhibition via synergistic anodic protection and physical shielding. This work provides a novel green approach for surface antifouling and drag reduction, highlighting MOF-loaded QSIs as promising additives to enhance the antifouling performance of hydrogel coatings, anti-corrosion performance, and QSI performance for sustainable marine engineering applications. The laser-based powder bed fusion of metal (PBF-LB/M) process of 316L stainless steel (SS) was systematically investigated under varying scanning spacings to assess its microstructural and mechanical properties. Optimized laser parameters were employed, and the resulting microstructure and mechanical performance were thoroughly characterized through surface and cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis, fracture surface examination, and tensile testing. The results indicated that a scanning spacing of 0.11 mm produced the most favorable mechanical properties, characterized by a dense microstructure and refined grain morphology. These findings provide critical insights for the optimization of PBF-LB/M process parameters, contributing to the advancement of additive manufacturing techniques for 316L SS. Full article

Metal additive manufacturing is a disruptive technology that is changing how various alloys are processed. Although this technology has several advantages over conventional manufacturing, it is still necessary to standardize its properties, which are dependent on the relative density (RD). In addition, since experimental designs are costly, one solution is using machine learning algorithms that allow the effects of variations in the processing parameters on the resulting density of the additively manufactured components to be anticipated. This work assembled a database based on data from 673 observations and 10 predictors to forecast the relative density of 316L stainless steel and AlSi10Mg components produced by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). LazyPredict was employed to select the algorithm that best models the variability of the inherent data. Ensemble boosting regressors offer higher accuracy, providing hyperparameter fitting and optimization advantages. The predictions’ precision for aluminum and stainless steel obtained an R2 value greater than 0.86 and 0.83, respectively. The results of the SHAP values indicated that laser power and energy density are the parameters that have the greatest impact on the predictability of the relative density of Al-Si10-Mg and SS 316L materials processed by L-PBF. This study presents a compendium of data for the additive fabrication of stainless steel and aluminum alloys, offering researchers a guide to understanding how processing parameters influence RD. The structure and composition of the oxide layer on the surface of 316L stainless steel (SS) after exposure to alkaline high-temperature and high-pressure water for 2000 h are characterized using various analytical techniques. The oxide layer has a double-layer structure comprising an outer spinel oxide and an inner Cr oxide. With an increase in exposure time, the thickness of the inner oxide layer increases and stabilizes at approximately 100 nm. The spinel oxide dissolves after 336 h of exposure, and the dissolution increases with increasing exposure time. The adsorptive capacity of OH on the NiFe2O4 surface is explained using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The energy released by the strong adsorption of OH on the surface of NiFe2O4 provides the impetus for the dissolution of NiFe2O4, so that NiFe2O4 dissolves in the experimental environment. The tequila industry faces several environmental challenges due to its high yields of contaminants, especially tequila distillation stillage or tequila vinasses, with ten to twelve liters produced per liter of tequila. All treatments aim to shorten retention times to avoid the need for large equipment or new facilities and the saturation of residues within tequila distilleries. The complexity of tequila vinasses has led to treatments with several stages, whereby most of the organic matter content is reduced, but the treatment range results are insufficient. This study aimed to evaluate a fourth-stage tequila vinasse treatment using an electrocoagulation system that uses inexpensive electrodes (SS cathodes and iron anodes), has a low electrical consumption, and applies low voltages in order to meet safety, economic, and environmental criteria so as to comply with Mexican norm NOM-001-SEMARNAT-2021. Three sets of voltage–amperage controllable power source, a 4 mm cylindrical 304 stainless-steel cathode, and a 9 mm iron anode with 200 mL samples in 250 mL beakers were used; three replicas (R1, R2, and R3) underwent 2 h treatment at 1–6 volts to evaluate the voltage effect and 1–6 h of 5-volt treatment to assess the time effect. All samples were filtered with 8 μm and 0.25 μm meshes. Chemical oxygen demand, pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, and color measurements (SAC for λ 436, 525, and 620 nm) were taken. The experiments determined the optimal voltage and time, considering a hydraulic retention time below 6 h. The results show that electrocoagulation of pretreated tequila vinasses effectively helps in the final removal of organic matter measured as COD, reaching values below 150 COD mg/L at 5–6 h with 5 V treatments and color reduction with 5 V, 1 h treatment. This leads to final polishing that complies with the Mexican wastewater discharge norm criteria. Full article

Seafood-borne pathogens, especially Listeria monocytogenes, pose a significant risk to global health, with the formation of biofilm on abiotic surfaces exacerbating contamination risks in the seafood industry. This investigation evaluates the biofilm inhibition efficacy of fucoidan against L. monocytogenes biofilms on commonly used processing surfaces. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of fucoidan was determined to be 150 µg/mL, and sub-MIC concentrations (1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 MIC) were assessed for their effects on inhibition of biofilm. This action resulted in a substantial, dose-dependent reduction in formation of biofilm, with maximum reductions of 2.91 log CFU/cm2 on hand gloves (HG), 2.46 log CFU/cm2 on silicone rubber (SR), and 2.11 log CFU/cm2 on stainless steel (SS). Gene expression analysis via real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) revealed the downregulation of quorum-sensing (QS) and virulence-associated genes (flaA, fbp, prfA, hlyA, and agrA), indicating fucoidan’s potential to inhibition of biofilm and bacterial pathogenicity. These results emphasize fucoidan as a promising environmental antimicrobial agent for mitigating L. monocytogenes biofilm in seafood handling environments, thus improving food safety and reducing contamination risks. Hybrid additive manufacturing (AM) provides a unique way of fabricating complex geometries with onboard machining capabilities, combining both additive and traditional subtractive techniques and resulting in reduced material waste and efficient high-tolerance components. In this work, a hybrid AM technology was used to create 316L stainless steel (316L SS) components using laser-wire-directed energy deposition (LW-DED) coupled with a CNC machining center on a single platform. Fully reversed fatigue tests were completed to investigate the as-manufactured life span of the additively manufactured structures for three different deposition rates of 6.33 g/min, 7.12 g/min, and 7.91 g/min. High-cycle fatigue test results showed that the fatigue performance of the tested specimens is not dependent on the deposition rates for the investigated parameters, with specimens with a 7.12 g/min deposition rate showing comparatively superior behavior to that of the other deposition rates at higher stress amplitudes. Fractography analysis was used to investigate the fractured surfaces, showing that the crack initiation sites were predominantly near the edges and not affected by the volumetric defects generated during manufacturing. X-ray-computed tomography (X-ray CT) analysis quantified the effect of the as-manufactured porosity on fatigue behavior, showing that the amount of porosity for the build rates used was insufficient to have a substantial impact on the fatigue behavior, even as it increased with the deposition rate. In this study, the applicability of an integrated-hybrid process was performed in a divided electrochemical cell for removing organic matter from a polluted effluent with simultaneous production of green H2. After that, the depolluted water was reused, for the first time, in the cathodic compartment once again, in the same cell to be a viable environmental alternative for converting water into energy (green H2) with higher efficiency and reasonable cost requirements. The production of green H2 in the cathodic compartment (Ni-Fe-based steel stainless (SS) mesh as cathode), in concomitance with the electrochemical oxidation (EO) of wastewater in the anodic compartment (boron-doped diamond (BDD) supported in Nb as anode), was studied (by applying different current densities (j = 30, 60 and 90 mA cm−2) at 25 °C) in a divided-membrane type electrochemical cell driven by a photovoltaic (PV) energy source. The results clearly showed that, in the first step, the water anodically treated by applying 90 mA cm−2 for 180 min reached high-quality water parameters. Meanwhile, green H2 production was greater than 1.3 L, with a Faradaic efficiency of 100%. Then, in a second step, the water anodically treated was reused in the cathodic compartment again for a new integrated-hybrid process with the same electrodes under the same experimental conditions. The results showed that the reuse of water in the cathodic compartment is a sustainable strategy to produce green H2 when compared to the electrolysis using clean water. Finally, two implied benefits of the proposed process are the production of green H2 and wastewater cleanup, both of which are equally significant and sustainable. The possible use of H2 as an energetic carrier in developing nations is a final point about sustainability improvements. This is a win-win solution. Full article

Hydrogen energy has emerged as a pivotal clean energy solution due to its sustainability and zero-emission potential. Microbial electrolysis cells are a promising technology for renewable hydrogen production, typically relying on expensive and unstable Pt/C catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To address these limitations, this study develops a cost-effective and durable alternative approach. A cobalt–molybdenum (Co-Mo) alloy catalyst (denoted as CoMo/SS) was synthesized via a one-step electrodeposition method on 1000-mesh 316L stainless steel at a current density of 30 mA·cm−2 for 80 min, using an electrolyte with a Co-to-Mo ratio of 1:1. The electrochemical properties and hydrogen evolution performance of this catalyst in a microbial electrolysis cell were evaluated. Key results demonstrate that the CoMo/SS catalyst achieves a good catalytic performance of hydrogen evolution. The CoMo/SS cathode catalyst only requires an overpotential of 91.70 mV (vs. RHE) to reach a current density of 10 mA·cm−2 in 1 mol·L−1 KOH, with favorable kinetics, evidenced by a reduced Tafel slope of 104.10 mV·dec−1, enhanced charge transfer with a charge transfer resistance of 4.56 Ω, and a double-layer capacitance of 34.73 mF·cm−2. Under an applied voltage of 0.90 V, the CoMo/SS cathode exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1.12 m3·m−3·d−1, representing a 33.33% improvement over bare SS mesh. This performance highlights the catalyst’s potential as a viable Pt/C substitute for scalable MEC applications. Full article

This work studied the effect of self-protective paste nitriding (SPN) and ion plasma nitriding (IPN) on the surface chemistry, microstructure, and nanohardness of AISI 304 and 316L stainless steels, with both treated at 440 °C for 5 h. Surface modifications analyzed using SEM and nanoindentation revealed distinct outcomes. SPN induced an oxynitriding effect due to the oxidation properties of the pastes, forming Fe3O4 and FexC phases, while IPN produced an expanded austenite layer. Both methods enhanced surface nanohardness, but SPN showed superior results. For 316L SS, SPN increased nanohardness by 367.81% (6.83 GPa) compared to a 133.5% increase (3.41 GPa) with IPN. For 304 SS, SPN improved nanohardness by 26% (2.23 GPa), whereas IPN reduced it by 48% (0.92 GPa). These findings highlight SPN’s potential as an effective anti-wear treatment, particularly for 316L SS. The SPN process utilized a eutectic mixture of sodium cyanate and sodium carbonate, while IPN employed a N2:H2 (1:1) gas mixture. SEM analyses confirmed the formation of γ-Fe(N) phases, indicating dispersed iron nitrides (FeN, Fe3N, Fe4N). SPN’s simultaneous oxidation and nitrocarburization led to an oxide layer above the nitride diffusion layer, enhancing mechanical properties through iron oxides (Fe3O4) and carbides (FexC). Comparative analysis showed that AISI 316L exhibited better performance than AISI 304, underscoring SPN’s effectiveness for surface modification. Full article

Corrosion-Resistant and Conductive Coatings on 316L Stainless Steel Bipolar Plates Fabricated by Hot Rolling

The insufficient corrosion resistance and high interfacial contact resistance (ICR) of 316L stainless steel (316L SS) severely limit its application as bipolar plates (BPs) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this study, a graphite/carbon black/PVDF composite coating was first developed by hot rolling on the surface of 316L SS to enhance both corrosion resistance and conductivity. By incorporating 5 wt% polyaniline (PANI) as a corrosion inhibitor, the optimized RP5 coating exhibited further improvements in corrosion resistance. The potentiodynamic polarization tests revealed that the RP5 coating achieved a corrosion current density of 0.977 μA·cm−2, representing a two-orders of magnitude reduction compared to bare 316L SS (34.1 μA·cm−2). The coating also exhibits a satisfactory interfacial contact resistance (ICR) of 8.20 mΩ·cm2 at 1.5 MPa, meeting the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) 2025 targets (<10 mΩ·cm2). Additionally, the RP5 coating exhibited superior hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 96.5°, which is advantageous for water management within PEMFCs. The results confirm that the RP5 coating achieves an optimal balance between high conductivity, excellent corrosion resistance, and improved hydrophobicity, making it a promising solution for advancing PEMFC bipolar plates’ performance.
